do you have to put an alum cell in a box like a plastic cell?

is the back of the car sealed from the driver?

the back will be sealed from the driver. this is a old car that hasn't been raced for sometime. it has the plastic cell with no box not alot of room between the frame rails. i think a alum cel ( 5gal ) will fit between the rails can I put a alum cell without a box for protection?
