D5 Awards Banquet
My wife and I (along with mom, dad and other friends), attended the D5 Awards Banquet this past Saturday at the Marriot in Overland Park, Kansas. This was the second year that I have attended, and really enjoyed it, much like the first. For me, it's great to see all the racers and NHRA people that I normally only see at the track during the summer months. It's a relaxed setting and some people hardly recognizable all cleaned up! Some say the acceptance speeches are too long, but I really enjoy hearing the stories that go along with winning a title. Some come easier than others, but most at a cost. None without spilling parts and wallets along the way.
Others may say it's not worth chasing points because the payout is not all that great. Maybe not in the way of money, but I could see the Gold card as a HUGE benefit when trying to race on a budget. But for me, I can see how money really has nothing to do with this. You race because it's what you do...because it's what you know...because it's what your dad or granddad did...because it's in your blood...because without racing, life would be pretty boring. So I say thanks to NHRA for hosting a banquet for each division to honor the years greatest accomplishments. I truly enjoy it and look forward to them in the years to come (they could find a way to cut the cost of alcoholic beverages, however!!!!). On a final note, congratulations once again to Justin Jenkins, Brad Haugaard and Dave Bogner for outstanding 2009's! We all look forward to 2010, and hope for great success and most importantly...great times at the track!! |
