1.41 under in Stock

Kudos to Div 3 for tearing down the car that went 1.41 under the index in Stock at Norwalk. The car did not pass an engine teardown so the automatic horsepower penalty will not go into effect.

Maybe this incident will show the need for this to become a standard procedure for the AHFS. Teardown should be mandatory anytime the 1.40 under limit is broken.

I think if you look closely at this you will see a way out of the problem. If I ran 1,41 under I would look for a way out. You cant pass the scale because there is a suspension for that so how about a long reach plug when you run a regular plug, that would change the cc on the chamber a few to fail I think ! Safe no index hit.

How much would switching the plugs change the CC's?

Good point, Bob. However, many years ago Farmer Dismuke taught me to seal a spark plug along with the rest of the engine. That Farmer was a smart guy.

ya gotta get up pretty early to get one over on travis http://www.classracer.com/html/happy.gif

automatic help for slugs... AHFS... cant / wont/ ever work... it only reports numbers... it cannot evaluate potential... therefore it is easily manipulated.

If you replace a standard cold spark plug with a hotter extended tip spark plug, the spark plug takes up more volume.

Quick example. Set up a small block Chevy head, and check the chamber volume with an AC R42T spark plug. Note the volume. Now, swap to an AC R45TS spark plug, and see the difference.

Now, the difference in the volume in most cases will not amount to a hill of beans performance wise, but the tech guy has a set volume, and they have to draw the line somewhere.

What's the point in running 1.40+ under and then manipulating the engine so the run doesn't count on the AHFS? Doesn't the run get thrown out for the event as well? I thought if you were found illegal you were told to go home and it was like you were never there.

Travis you are right, I was aware of that as X did the same in the 70s when I set a record but the plugs could have been in before hand as a backup. This happened to my bud Adger Smith a cou[le of years ago in SS at Montgomery, first pass, good air. unknown result amounted to an index hit. You need to plan ahead or take the hit.

both Jack and Jeff is thinking what i'm thinking...what a complete joke this type of racing has become.....that is if you dont like to play all these games that are involved with AHFS....but some do like it i guess...they really need to lower the indexes...they have been the same 13-14 years now....and the cars are probably .5 faster.. around 90-91 the -.500 under club was often referred to by the announcers..and was smaller than the -1.00 usually is today.. -.500 meant more then that -1.00 do today...everyone can do it...well it feels like that anyway...
