Generator Exhaust
Is NHRA enforcing the rule for generator exhaust to exit above trailer roof tops @ division and national events. If so what are some of the systems everydody has come up with?

Re: Generator Exhaust
It is a rule, but I've never seen it enforced at Div 2 LODRS races. From what I understand this rule applies to generator units that you might say are permenatly mounted in a motorhome or enclosed trailer. I don't think they are too concerned with portable units that can be moved around.
Camping World sells a bolt-on type of exhaust pipe extention called a Gen-turi. It cost somewhere around $150 if I remember correctly. I made my own simular exhaust extention for my motorhome for about $30. If you go to a web site called rv.net and do a search of the forums for "homemade gen-turi" you will find pictures of what others have made themselves and descriptions of the parts they used. We made our own for right around $30 also, they havent really enforced it here in D1. Everyone pretty much has one by now, and portable units are usually placed in front of the tow rig, so the noise and fumes dont interfere with your neighbors pit space. |
Re: Generator Exhaust
Jim;
Here's a link to give you some ideas on how to make one for yourself. You can use either 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" emt conduit coupler and a 90 degree elbow (depending on the size of the exhaust pipe from your generator). Some 1/2" wide flat bar stock, 3" PVC or ABS plastic pipe, a coupler or 2 for the 3" pipe and a couple of pop rivets or self-tapping screws. I made mine from ABS (black) pipe because it is lighter than white PVC. After a couple of years I drilled out the rivets I used and replaced them with self tapping screws because the rivets loosened up from the heating and cooling down. You will see in the pictures that the PVC pipe is positioned about 1" above the end of the emt elbow. This is necessary to draw cool air up into the plastic pipe behind the warm air of the exhaust and keep the plastic pipe from becoming too warm. http://showland.org/rv_mods/genturi/genturi.html Hope this helps you. Re: Generator Exhaust
In my recent return to racing I haven't seen it enforced in D6, but I have noticed an overwhelming majority in compliance. Everyone points and laughs at me when they see my solution. I run my Honda EU2000i on the roof of my camper. Makes it harder to steal too.
