Throttle stop down track?

New guy with a question. I'm new to .90 racing and was wandering if i can slow my car to 10.90 with the stop coming on at say 5.0 sec out rather than at .300 and still be consistant. Its just not mutch fun having it come on at the start then waiting 2.5 seconds to blast off. The car runs 9.70's at 140 all out. Any idea how long i would have to be on the stop starting that far out?

People have tried this, with little/no success. Consistency is terrible.

Think about it this way: let's say you pick 5 seconds. Because of changes in weather (DA) your car is winding to a different RPM in the first 5 seconds, then you shut it down for some period of time. But from a different RPM each time.

If you shut down right off the line, you come down off a consistent (rev limited) RPM every time. The RPMs for the first N seconds are always the same. Not if you choose your way.

Also, think about how weird it would be to judge the stripe when slowing down... that'd be strange...

But hey, give it a shot... :)

There was a SG car at Pacific this past weekend, running 9.90's in Super-Pro at 112 mph. I was running my stop "old school" style where it switched on as I shifted to high gear, running 9.90's at 128 mph. Then again, neither of us won, but the other guy made it quite a few rounds.

Re: Throttle stop down track?

We have been running our stop on the top-end for over 8 years now in D-1 S/G. At first it was very inconsistant and hard to get information since we are the only one's who do it. For the longest time we had a old Biondo throttle stop control with the thumbwheel in it but was told by Sam that all the dirt and garbage can get into the thumbwheel and make it very incosistant. You may put 6.15 in the box but because of the dirt in the gears it maybe really set on a 5.99. We always set the Stop RPM's at 4,000 for the whole day and don't touch it. You can do it a few different ways, you can set the bottom number at 1400 and play around with the top number. Depending on the track and weather conditions it may vary, a track like Atco in the Spring/Fall we run around 5.25 to 5.50 as the top number and then change it as the weather get's worse or better. Some other tracks like Numidia which has about 3600 A/A (About what you may deal with out west) we put 6.60 to 6.90 in the stop and it's right on a 9.900 run. It's something to try and it really really really screws up the 160 to 180mph cars who try to wheel race you because if you have a good light and are set up on a 90, 91, 92 they don't catch you till about 1,275 feet of the track and it's very hard for them to judge you. You also leave the top number at 5.00 or 5.50, etc and change the bottom number. This way the stop comes on and when the other car comes up on you and plays the wheel game and you have 9.25 in the box it will come back to life and really screw up their game. If you need any help please feel free to PM me.

112MPH S/G and loves screwing with the fast guys :)

Re: Throttle stop down track?

Chris,
I should videotape the reactions of the drivers who don't know we do the top end stop deal and it's funny. I raced Hollis C. from California in 1st round at our local Super Gas Series race this year and he didn't know about the stop. He laid down a 9.900 on me and beat me cause we messed up on the number but I went over to his trailer to congratulate him and he was like "I thought your throttle stop broke cause you were 20+ cars out on me and in my head I was like well I got this one won then I saw your nose drop and I started making up ground on you and I was like dam SOB has a top end stop, i'm in trouble". It really really messes with peoples head

I'm hoping the one I saw this past weekend shows up this weekend at the National Open. Heck, if I've already lost and he's still in, I'll hang out near the finish line just to see the looks on the other drivers faces! Too bad we all have to have the full face helmets now, would otherwise make for better top end photos ;)
