3 speed for 57-61 update
bill dedman
after meeting at indy bruce took my information and has returned it with the message he agrees it is a three speed transmission but asked i not run it until NHRA offically approves it. i respect bruce very much and am following his directive. i have sent bruce and gracia emails asking for updates without reply i do intend to run one next year, i will have my lawyer notify them in advance if we are not given the green light before then. i agree i cannot understand why it isnt a yes / no deal (no is tough i have proof) with approximately 80,000 of them sold to the general public... too bad its not a FORD... one of those sold to a special interest racer with a letter from shelby sails right through NHRA.... as ia said before... i'm a dinosaur, im critical of NHRA and pretty much they just hate me... why else am i the ONLY 283 who doesnt get the bogus 459 intake ????????? captain jack |
Re: 3 speed for 57-61 update
Jack don't feel alone, my friend emailed everyone in Div 2 and California about a weight change before Indy and got no response. At Charlotte he confronted one of the head officials and asked if he had seen his request and he got a no. My friend proceeded to show him the delivery receipts on the emails and he opened his ears up. We'll it's now been over a month and still word on the weight break. NHRA blows!

Re: 3 speed for 57-61 update
Cap'n Jack,
Thanks a lot for the update! Why am I not surprised at the INCREDIBLE amount of inertia involved in a simple "yes or no" answer from the "Glendora braintrust" regarding a question that will affect the total of how many cars? ONE? Jeesh.... That intake manifold deal is another head shaker for me... I can't imagine what kind of "logic" is involved in a deal like that. I ran a 220hp 283 in my '57 sedan delivery in '66 - '71 (along with partner, Harry Sparks) and if we'd known.... well, we could have used the horsepower. Marv Ripes and John Archambault were TOUGH.... to say nothing of "Big" John Barkley's 'glide car... When you get that 3-speed operational (I hope it's a metric 200), please let us know to what extent it affected your incremental times. Inquiring minds, etc... :) Bill |
Re: 3 speed for 57-61 update
Cap'n Jack,
Now that the racing season is officially over, those poor overworked Tech heads should be able to find five minutes to write you a letter of approval for the Metric 200 3-speed that will replace the optional TurboGlide (3-speed) that could have come in your wagon, right? I wouildn't let a week go by wthout reminding them of this issue and its immediacy. The Winternationals are right around the corner... Time is of the essence. Good luck dealing with this! The value of persistence cannot be underestimated, methinks. Bill |
Re: 3 speed for 57-61 update
"poor overworked Tech heads". Bill, if ya' say that real fast, it kinda sounds like 'dick heads'. :-) Kind of interchangeable too, doncha think?

Re: 3 speed for 57-61 update
sorry bill....
gonna be a turbo 350 to start...thomas arnett has assured me that is what i want and i trust him with all my transmission issues...he also build metrics i intend to run belle rose with 275 low gear, powerglide input and my old convertor since i have no time to test it seems like a logical starting point. however still as of 11/19/08 i have not recieved NHRA's blessing, but have compiled over 100 pages i will be sending them inlcuding all manufacturing info showing it was available from 57-61 in full size only behind everything rated LESS than 280 hp ??... all 6 cylinders, 283 and low hp 348 hey they only minted over 180,000 of them in 5 years... ya think if shelby gets his ONE (or was it 51)single 4bll car approved i could get an amen on almost a 1/4 million ... but again they hate my old dinosaur ***, i am sure they wish me and guys like me would just go away. captain jack |

Re: 3 speed for 57-61 update
Cap'n Jack,
I wasn't planning on going to Belle Rose (500 miles to spectate???), but I may have to reconsider if I have a chance to see "HISTORY BEING MADE!!!" Bruce needs an answer... and so do the rest of us. What can POSSIBLY be so time-consuming about a simple yes/no question? Especially, since the correct answer is so friggin' OBVIOUS.... Only in Glendora... Keep is posted, please. |
