Ford Cylinder Head Question

With the new cylinder head rules (aluminum) If I were to build a GT/KA engine and use Aluminum heads (AFR) Would I have to cut the valve down to the correct size or do the rules allow out of the box use? Also with the difference in CC's of the heads can they be milled to the factory numbers? Is it worth using aluminum or stock style heads having to add the weight for aluminum? Thinking of building a 1968 J code 302 engine for SS racing.

Any info would be helpful. Thanks in Advance.

Re: Ford Cylinder Head Question

I don`t know much about IHRA stuff, but if you are talking NHRA S/S racing, you couln`t run the AFR heads at all.

I believe they recently added the AFR heads , Nick Morris has them on his GT/KA Mustang. I saw them on it at Indy.

Re: Ford Cylinder Head Question

The Canfield and AFR cylinder head is only legal in Super Stock class for the 1964 to 1965 289, and 1968 302 engine applications only. The volumes have a listed runner volume of intake 167cc and exhaust 67cc and when you use either head, you have to account for an additional 10 HP penalty.

Re: Ford Cylinder Head Question

The accepted heads part numbers are 18350 Canfield and 1399/165 AFR both with 167cc intake port and 67cc exhaust port. The SS horsepower is 230 with intake/Exhaust sizes of 1783/1457 inches.

I would call the manufacturers direct to see if the heads come with the proper valve size and then measure them after I got the heads (see Indy disqualification of Evan Smith).
