Re: 8.50 index build
Back home from a long weekend. The car seemed to be pretty well received by some of the people attending. Seems like the judges might have liked it a little as well. Competition was the class as in race car class.
Thanks to everyone who came out and took some time to chat and help pass the time. Dad and I had always talked about having a car in an indoor car show. Sure wish he could have been here for this as I think he would have really enjoyed it. One more item checked off the bucket list. Time to get back to working on that remaining items on the “To-Do” list to get ready for making initial passes come spring. https://i.imgur.com/wnCIF9m.jpg https://i.imgur.com/25aUS1W.jpg https://i.imgur.com/KZwZnah.jpg https://i.imgur.com/KVM4ovl.jpg |
Re: 8.50 index build
I don't know if I corrected this yet or not. Although the thread is titled 8.50 index, I have since changed my mind and am moving the car to run some 1/8 mile top bulb racing. Cecil has a Top Sportsman class I'll run at the Street Car Shootouts. I can then run without the restrictor plate.

Re: 8.50 index build
This car is simply amazing. Congrats on the well deserved recognition. Absolutely my favorite build on here. I'm a big fox body fan especially a nice 4 eye. This is my dream bracket car. Totally nailed it.

Re: 8.50 index build
One of the details people at the show seemed to really like was the custom air brushing on the dash. Here's a couple of better pics.

It came in while the car was in the body shop getting the trim stuff installed and never got a chance to check the fit. Seems to fit really well, even on all of the non stock body stuff like the 9" chin spoiler, 4" sunoco hood, front exit exhaust, 15" Racecraft wing and the parachute. https://i.imgur.com/YY4RcZ1.jpg https://i.imgur.com/bpB7u91.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Q06h4fr.jpg https://i.imgur.com/CCcGl6z.jpg https://i.imgur.com/HB4asUG.jpg |

https://i.imgur.com/TUFg9dk.jpg Back from the show and I need to work on the rest of the To-Do list. First up is the custom cowl cover. It's all made up, just dropped it off for powder coating. Nothing like doing fabrication work on fresh paint. https://i.imgur.com/XNxF9qT.jpg https://i.imgur.com/PDGcvZy.jpg https://i.imgur.com/3kdu6yc.jpg https://i.imgur.com/yIPRB3M.jpg |
Re: 8.50 index build
Outstanding job !!
Im looking forward to seeing it in person at Cecil or Atco |
Re: 8.50 index build
Look into mid Atlantic.90 they have included top sportsman/dragster for this season. Would be a great place to race. We run local tracks to you. Cecil, atco, and maple grove. Rob kiester posts on here so if interested and need more info, look him up. I will definitely be sure to come check out all the hard work you put into this project

Re: 8.50 index build
I was able to get the headlights wired over the weekend. Ran out of some supplies so I'll finish that up once they get delivered. The halo headlights are from Octane Lighting.

Re: 8.50 index build
The other day I noticed some oil drips on the car in a couple areas. Decided it would be best to pull the engine to better find the source and take care of the leaks. Nothing like going backwards sometimes.

Re: 8.50 index build
Wow, Todd!
As I’ve e followed along on instagram, this thread is the first time I saw it from start to finish! Such an amazing job with super attention to detail. Best of success to you, as long as you don’t line up next to me. :D See you at the track! BTW, did you know the NHRA is considering an 8.60 class for a national championship? Apparently, they’re looking to tap into the very popular 8.50 index racers and the drag and drive folks. No throttle stops or delay boxes. Basically, run what you bring as long as it’s a door car. You’d fit in nicely! |

I've since decided to leave 8.50 index to run the local Top Sportsman series. But that would be great if NHRA added a similar class. |
Re: 8.50 index build
Sorry for the lack of updates.
Came home from the show and began to work on the chassis setup. Found the rear shocks were not sitting down at ride height length so I had to swap from the 80 lb coil springs to a 70 lbs. Put the car on scales as well as measuring and plotting the instant center. https://i.imgur.com/boSy0io.jpg https://i.imgur.com/SRv57xi.jpg https://i.imgur.com/bMT0vbK.jpg |
Re: 8.50 index build
Next up was to put the car on the chassis dyno to work on the efi tune. Got the tuneup almost done when we heard a noise in the valvetrain and aborted any more runs. Took the car home to investigate.

Re: 8.50 index build
Pulled the passenger valve cover on the dyno and found 3 of the small bolts laying in the head that attach the exhaust stand to the intake stand.
Got home and took it all apart to inspect the thread inserts in the heads. False alarm, all was tight and threads were good. Can only assume those small bolts just never got tightened completely. https://i.imgur.com/ceMBPD1.jpg https://i.imgur.com/3IlHoRs.jpg https://i.imgur.com/f36bnh6.jpg https://i.imgur.com/B4p9Qwx.jpg |
Re: 8.50 index build
Time to mount up a new set of M/T 315 Pro's.

Re: 8.50 index build
Next up was to finally put all the safety gear in the car. The seat belts were first, but it's a project. The seat has to come out to be able to reach the bolts for bolting them in. The driveshaft enclosure is really close to the seat, so it and the driveshaft have to come out to be able to unbolt the seat.

Next was the window net and diaper. Both custom pieces, both Kevlar. Window net from Stroud, diaper from DRE.

Re: 8.50 index build
The other weekend it was nice and sunny, and the car enough together to get it outside for some pics. The Bimini blue pops nicely in the sun.

Re: 8.50 index build
Nope it got rained out. Maybe he went to the test and tune?
|
Re: 8.50 index build
The event did get rained out although they still held the "pro test session" on Friday. My crew couldn't go and it was overcast and a chance of rain although they did make it all day without rain.
We did make it out this past Saturday to test. Just a normal test-n-tune day. Prep isn't great on those days, plus it was cold and overcast. Started out in the upper 30's in the morning to a high of 52 when we left. Running a 315 radial with a nose heavy car is gonna be a challenge. Not sure I can make it work consistently, but I'm gonna try for a while. I have 27+ years of racing on a radial and really wanted to try and stick with it. If it becomes apparent it's just not gonna work, I'll be forced to change to a M/T 3062W 29.5 x 10.5W bias tire. Car had come traction issues. Four attemps and spun every time. Shock adjustments each time, no change at all though. Came home, looked at the data and also the pictures the track photographers posted and decided the car needed a 4 link bar change. Spent the last two evenings with the car on scales measuring and plotting the 4 link again, then moving the bars. One other issue on track is the air shifter wasn't activating. I believe it's a problem with the programming in the Holley EFI, so I gotta look into that later this week. Car felt good, brakes bed in on the first pass and feel good, so once it hooks I should be good to let it ride out to a full 1/8 mile pass. I'll post some pictures once I get a little time to upload them. |
Re: 8.50 index build
If you changed to top sportsman can’t you fit a larger tire? My old super gas car would have a little trouble once in a while with cold temps and marginal track prep with 14.5x32’s. It would of been a lot harder trying to run it with 10.5’s.

This car was never meant to be a big tire car. I built it around the 315 Pro radial, so I only stretched the wheel wells for the 30" tire. IMO this body style car looks horrible as a big tire car. I have numerous things to try and make the car hook consistently. Instant center, front end travel, ballast, launch timing retard, and if I really wanted to dog it out of the hole the Coan 400xlt th400 has a second gear leave valve body. Time will tell if I can make it work or not. |
