I thought the Mailbu was unmatched. Man, you have done it again, Todd. I'll say, Ive been a big fan of your skill and abilities, from way back when you built your open trailer, from scratch, and the seeing a few cars you did thru the shop. My hat is off....

Wow !

Thanks Kenny.

Funny you mentioned the trailer build as when I went to an enclosed trailer I sold the custom open to a member here on Classracer. Can't remember his name though.

Sure miss that trailer some days.

While I was finishing up the fabrication, a good friend worked on a rendering for the car to get an idea of how it will look with various color choices.

And with that, this is almost where we are today.

Just last Monday I delivered the car to the body shop. So now the wait...

https://i.imgur.com/fGqVzqP.jpg

My goal would be to try and have the car back from body/paint by the end of the year to give me the rest of the winter/spring to assemble, plumb & wire the car, but we will jut have to see how this goes since it's out of my control now.

Loved your Malibu. Your fabrication skills with this build are top notch. I'm a huge 4 eye fan as I recently sold mine (small tire turbo car). This is going to be a work of art. Don't know what color you are going with but love the Orange look.
Keep the updates coming.

Thanks for posting the build process on your car, it has been very informative. Top notch skill and workmanship too. Just curious about the powder coating; it looks like the chassis was coated with the body attached but the exterior of the body doesn't have any powder coat on it. How do they do that?

Thanks

Hey Greg, glad you enjoyed following the build thus far. Thanks you.

The powder is sprayed on with a static charge on the metal. They will usually just not spray any areas where the customer doesn't want powder. But if powder winds up in an area it's not supposed to they can easily brush it off or use a small vacuum to remove it before placing the part in the oven.

I didn't really want powder on the door jambs or rockers, but the body guy can simply sand the area and paint over the powder.

LPC Powder Coating in Hanover, PA. Normally only a one day job, but I had to wait my turn as well as they group jobs by color.

Re: 8.50 index build

The car is still in the early stages of body work but sometime soon I need to decide on a color. Think I have it narrowed down to either a silver/blue color or I also have two silvers in mind, but trying to not do silver again if I can find the right silver/blue.

My buddy did another rendering with a lighter shade of blue.

https://i.imgur.com/S1E7Xtw.jpg

So in the silver/blue family I've seen so far that look promising...

-2022 Ford Mustang Brittany Blue
- lincoln Chroma Crystal Metallic (same paint code as Brittany Blue)
- 1985-1986 Mustang Light Regatta Blue
- 1958 Corvette Silver Blue
- 2005-2008 Ford Windveil Blue
- 2012 Corvette Carlisle Blue
- 2007 Honda CRV Glacier Blue
- 69 Chevy Glacier Blue

If I can't find a blue it will be either one of these silvers.

- 2021 Ford Mustang Iconic Silver
- 2015-2021 Chrysler Billet Silver Metallic

Re: 8.50 index build

While the car is away, I've been slowly pecking away at trying to get organized and cleaned up. One issue with a build like this is trying to not lose small stuff while the car is in the body shop. Ran over to Home Depot last week to pick up some inexpensive totes for the small hardware. Still feels like a mess with stuff sitting everywhere.

Re: 8.50 index build

So the guys at the body shop have been pretty busy working on straightening this poor beat up body. The front end and doors are done and in primer. The roof and quarters are done on the main body, just need to do a little smoothing to the shock towers, cowl and passenger rocker and the main body was planned to be in primer today.

https://i.imgur.com/Q4YqeIT.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/m0d0126.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/XeUNsge.jpg

If the body gets primered today, there's a good chance it will get sent home yet this week. This is to allow the materials to cure for 3 weeks then back to the shop for block sanding and paint. So hopefully the car may be in color around the end of the year/beginning of 2022. Hard to say with the holidays.

Re: 8.50 index build

The last few weeks I've spent some time looking at and trying to decide on a paint color. Last weekend drove to a dealer to see a color thinking it was the one and once I saw it in person decided it wasn't.

The body shop is owned by two brothers who are good customers of ours at my work. They specialize in Porsche repairs and restoration as well as many other high end European cars. I'm gonna post some of the choices I've narrowed down to and they are all Porsche colors as with an online search I discovered they have used well over 100 variations of blue over the years. One web page (in German) shows every color Porsche has ever used showing the color name, paint code, years it was used, what models it was used on and even sample pics. Found it very helpful.

Anyway, I'd decided on a blue in the silver/blue family. Really wanted to stay on the lighter end to keep some contrast with the factory flat black GT hood stripe, blacked out headlight buckets and the oem wrap around GT body moldings and trim. My inspiration for this was the original Ford Mustang GT Light Regatta Blue which was a nice color although kinda blah if you ask me. Wanted something similar, but slightly different.

Anyway, here's the choices in no particular order. Pretty sure I know which one I'm leaning towards, but also want to see a sample in person to be sure.

Re: 8.50 index build

All of these blues are very nice with the California Metallic as my favorite. My concern is that all are very chilly colors and might contrast too much with the flat black of the rally stripe you want to keep. Too much of a jump might be too bold. Maybe a flat gray or gunmetal for the hood and stripe?

Dyno 11-23-2021 10:08 PM

Calif blue👍. But I still like an orange color. Make it stand out.

Maybe ice blue metallic is what you want, hard to tell in pictures. I prefer blues that don’t have too much green or purple hues in them. My mustang is in the paint shop right now and it will be a while straightening out 53yr old sheet metal. I’m leaning toward GM hyper blue with white stripes for mine. (‘67 GT500 B/SA)

Deep blues are nice but I like Race Red on my Mustang. It's an In Your Face color in a world dominated by Chevy products.

My favorite "ice blue" was on the '78 Diamond Jubilee Thunderbird.

Body shop made good progress this week finishing the body work on the main body shell and getting it in primer.

Last items for body work are smoothing the warped cowl panel, shock towers and the hatch. Working on color selection so they can start cutting in the jambs next week.

Body work is nearing completion. They hope to spray color this week, or maybe next at the latest.

About time to start installing all of this stuff. Probably the biggest project on the assembly of the car, the custom EFI harness and wiring.

I forgot to post this last week. The new intake was fit to the cylinder head dowel shift and fully ported. Once that came back it went right out again and after 5 weeks just came back from Switzer Dynamics from having the EFI conversion done.

Once the intake was home I did a quick mockup of the restrictor plate and 2.55 blade Wilson throttle body. Have some issues to work through to make the restrictor plate work. Unsure if I'll keep the plate and run 8.50 or swap the plate for an open spacer and run Top Sportsman at Cecil.
