Coating bare tubing
 

Some years ago, we used a kit that was similar to gun bluing to treat, stain, bare tubing. We did a complete dragster and it worked out fine. I do not remember any downside to the process. Like a gun, we would wipe it down from time to time but mostly it weathered just fine. Have any of y'all done this? Do you know the product?

Im not sure of the exact product you are wanting to use, but at my fab shop we use Gibbs oil to protect our bodies we build from rusting.

Larry,

Are you referring to "black oxide" coating which is similar to gun bluing? I have never used it but there are several companies that sell kits. Most appear to be oriented toward coating small parts via immersion.

One of the best products for protecting a roll cage, chassis parts, and components is Steel-It. Easy to spray and it needs to air-cure for a few days. After it cures, it will sustain solvents, oils, fuel, and chip resistant.
It is the preferred finish for Trophy Truck chassis and suspension components that are exposed and have to sustain the rough environment of desert racing.

I have used something called sharkhide for bare metal. It’s pretty easy to work with and leaves the original finish
