1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
2 Attachment(s)
Have been working on this for most of the year.Actually started the motor build last year.It is a 180/197 HP 265.I originally was building a 4 door ,but it is being held hostage in a local body shop.A friend had this pretty solid 2dr that he purchased from a 95 year old gentlemen. He offered it up to me so I could get some runs on it this year.Have had the car out a couple of times and with a not loose enough convertor, and not enough rear gear have been able to run a 13.49 at 97 mph on the Q/SA index of 13.85.Hope to get it to the Earlville points race after Indy for its first taste of NHRA action. Will be picking up a new convertor at Indy, and hope to have it in before Earlville. Will race this car at a few opens,Nostalgia events, and will continue to race the Buicks at National events. Will post more pictures later.

Re: 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
Great looking 55, I bet those aluminum slot wheels are about as light as most "modern" wheels, and really suit that car.

Re: 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
Got a video of the 55 on you tube from the last test session. It is under 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA 265 Jr Stocker run.It was done from a phone so it is not the best quality, but still fun to watch.Ran 13.55 @ 97 mph on the run.

Re: 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
This is a tough combination to make HP.
It has flat top pistons with no valve relief. Limits the cam duration a good bit. Be awesome to see it get in the 12’s. D |
Re: 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
Carl Libucha running 12's with his Q/SA 55 Chevy out of Massachusetts.

The 55 Q/SA had its first NHRA outing at the Indy Fall Classic over the weekend. Was fighting carb problems all weekend, but did put one good run together in the first round of Stock eliminations when I ran a 13.750 on a 13.75 dial, so I got the first round win out of the way.Ran 13.55 and 13.60 on the first test day,but after that couldn't run any faster than 13.75, with 60 foots going from low 1.80s to 1.90s.It was still fun, as the car got a lot of attention. Will work on it over the winter, and my goal next year is to set a record so I can get "National Record Holder" on the roof. Will have to seek out a class that the record has gone back to the minimum. If you look real close you might even see a little daylight under the left front.LOL

Great car!!
|
Re: 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
Frank, the headers are a set of 1971 vintage adjustable 1 5/8s(list for over $200.back then) Hookers. Was told by another 265 Stock racer that the smaller tube headers were worth something on the dyno.Going back to the track this week to try to get some carbs sorted out.Love testing in this cool fall weather.Takes less time to cool down, and it is fast most of the time unless the wind is in your face.

Re: 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
Are you running a '56 block so you have an oil filter?
|
Re: 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
Going to pick up a couple 57 265 blocks this week for my new build so I will be able to use a spin on filter, and the starter will bolt on in the conventional way. They make a good rubber rear main seal for it also. These blocks are suppose to be extra thick in the walls and deck .One racer called them the poor mans "BowTie".

Started to collect parts for next years "new 265" build.Pistons came in the other day.I set one next to what I'm used to dealing with, a 455 Buick slug.LOL Don't have the blue 55 car anymore.Guy that loaned it to me wanted it back. So this winter I will be building my own 55 from the ground up for the P/SA and Q/SA wars next year when I'm not racing my Buick.LOL Will be getting the 55 shell inside and starting to rebuild the front suspension in a few weeks. Will keep you informed, as well on updates on engine build.

My good buddy Mike C and I are back to work 55 Q/SA project. The body I have needs some work as the roof was patched with a huge pc of fiberglass mat. When I took the windshield out, I noticed remnants of a old vinyl top. Probably put on in the 70s, or early 80s. Moisture under it caused the roof panel to rust very bad. I cut the roof panel off and cleaned the mounting surfaces, A 2 day job. We used 3M panel adhesive to mount the panel back on. I was very carefull not to damage the headliner, since it was in fairly good condition. Also pictured is the frame. I had it blasted, and powdered coated. There is a place about a hour north of me that will do that for $300. Heck of a deal. This week I plan on finishing up the floor, and trunk patching, and next week getting the rebuilt frame back under the body. I might add that the roof panel was a reproduction. It fit fairly good. We did need to do a little metal trimming on it at the A pillar.

Re: 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
When NHRA put the older cars back in the guide a few years back they raised the 1955 4bl HP from 180 to 200. It has been lowered some to 197. Needs to go further down, as the 55 265 has to use flat top pistons which means you have to use a cam with 230 degrees duration or less, or you will have valve to piston clearance problems. Mid way thru 1956 GM started building 265s with valve notches. They discontinued the over counter sales of the flat top piston about that time also. In the Jr Stocker days you could use the notched 265 pistons, but not now. Go figure.
|
Re: 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
Find an OEM piston with notches, submit..
|
Re: 1955 Chevrolet Q/SA Build
Dwight, I have talked to everyone at NHRA who would listen to get the notched piston okayed, but it always comes back No. I have the flat pistons, and the low duration cam purchased now so that is what I will run. Thanks for the suggestion though.
