Manual Transmission for Stock Eliminator Question

Building a new ‘94-‘95 Mustang 5.0 for stock Eliminator, (M,N,O), with intentions of later changing to Cobra or Cobra R combo and running (I,J,K), or (E,F,G) respectively. With that being said, looking for some input on the best manual trans to use in a stocker of this kind. I’ve ran both Jerico DR4 and GForce G101-A in past cars, (not Stockers), so have some experience with them. First stock Eliminator build, and just looking for some real world feedback. Thanks in advance.

Hey Tony,

I run a GF5R G Force 5 speed in my 2012 Cobra-Jet stocker I have been told by several that a 4 speed would not be any slower. I don't know about that.

I like the G Force as they are easy to get replacement parts and help when needed.

Hey Robin. Didn’t realize you were running a stocker now. Thank you

Re: Manual Transmission for Stock Eliminator Question

I have also used Jerico DR4s, both in my bracket car, as well as my 85 Mustang 5.0, and currently have a G Force G101A in my bracket car. My Mustang was legal with either a 4 or a 5 speed, I never tried a 5 speed in the Mustang, as I already had the Jericos, and the cost of a new 5 speed was not in the budget. That said, I have to think a 5 speed should be quicker, as it allows for a closer drop between gears, especially with a 1rst gear ratio well in the 3.s . I never noticed any performance difference in my low 10 second bracket car between the Jerico DR4 and the G101A, the reason that I switched to the G Force was that getting replacement parts for the older Jericos was becoming problematic, as Jerico told me that my DR4 was "obsolete", and said that I needed to buy a new DR4-4. Being less than impressed with Jerico`s "customer service", I bought the G Force, and I really like it. That said, if Jerico hadn`t have turned their back on us DR4 owners, I likely never would have made the switch, although I have heard the Jerico did change their mind, and made replacement parts available again, but no idea if every part is available or not. I have been to the G Force facility in Pennsylvania a couple of times, and the operation is very impressive, plus the owner is also a drag racer.

Rory, Thanks for the reply. I have also ran both the DR4 and 101-A in a Mustang, and had good luck with both. We also have a local company whose transmissions seem to be getting good results in The Southeast Gassers, Hightower Transmissions, but I don’t think they do a 5 speed. Since I’m wanting to buy new, and buy once, I’ll more than likely just buy a 5 speed and be done.

I have two Jerico's,one is a DR4 and the other is a DR4 -4. I've had no problems getting parts for either one. I believe it's the old narrow gear DR4 transmissions that they're not making parts for anymore.

Jerico is making most of the parts for the DR4

Freshened my Jerico DR-4 wide gear a couple weeks ago had no problem getting sliders and dog rings, had them in hand 4 days after I ordered them. Transmission was built in 2008 and first time it has been Freshened, gears looked like new.

Re: Manual Transmission for Stock Eliminator Question

Perhaps Jerico is making all the DR4 parts again, but both my DR4s were wide gear versions, one an earlier model with the smaller, Toploader size input bearing, (Rev.2 maybe), the other had the larger bearing. Anyhow, in 2018, I broke a mainshaft on the later version, and when I called Jerico to order a new mainshaft, they informed me that they were not going to be selling parts for what they called "an obsolete" transmision (anything older than a DR4-4). I thought that was a bad decision, based on how many D4s are out there. Luckily a buddy had a couple of Jerico parts transmissions, so I got the mainshaft, and finished out the season, and then bought the G Force trans. I know that Gary Howe broke a mainshaft in the DR4 in his SS/O 55 Chevy, and Jerico told him the same thing. If Jerico did indeed change their decision, and go back to supplying parts again, thats great, but after selling both my Jericos, I doubt I would go back to them, since the G Force is working great, and I know that parts won`t be a problem down the road, although in the 4 seasons with the G101A, all I have done is change the gear oil.
