Rear gear selection...
So... what gear ratio is common on 396 or 427 combos?
From past experience I'm guessing 4.88 or 5.13? Would that be in the ballpark? How tight do those things turn? (in a stocker?) 7000? 7500? MPH 130ish? |
Re: Rear gear selection...
A lot of factors to consider. Oval or Rec port? Weight of car? HP rated and dynod? 1/4 or 1/8 racing.

Re: Rear gear selection...
Tire diameter should be considered as well. Radial or bias ply will play into the equation too.

Back in 1992 I went 10.54 at 123 mph with a 5.13 at the Snowbird Nationals 29.5 Firestone slick crossing 7600 rpm.
Nothing burger cast crank BBC 427 600 lift flat tap, steel Merlin heads 3475 all steel Nova That was flying in 1992 home built on $10.00 bucks an hour. I'd put a 5.13 in it. I learned the easy way in 92, the first 100 ft makes you. |
Re: Rear gear selection...
Wasn't the 5.00 gear created for these combos?

Re: Rear gear selection...
When I at Ford they were making 5.20s and 5.00 cause the 5.14 gear is a week design because of the tooth count.

Square port stuff... A/S, B/S, etc. Looking at some of the heads up races, can't tell how hard they are running these things, just got me curious. Putting a car together and trying to decide what I want to do with it... Long way to go yet... |
