V8 vega
First off this question don’t belong here but I’m sure one of you knows the answer. When I was a teenager I had a V8 Vega and it never made it to the track but where we raced I’m guessing and about 1200 feet it would flutter the windshield wipers then hold em off the windshield till you lifted. The speedo was way off from the Power train swap anyone else encounter this if so at what speed did that happen. One of those things ya spend the rest of your life wondering almost makes you want to build another one with correct speedo to see but I hated it unless the go pedal was nailed and then for a short time it was my favorite car ever. It was a 1972 stock hood car.

Re: V8 vega
I’ve been looking for that answer for about 45 years. Back then when one of friends wanted to race I give them a ride out to the spot and say watch the wipers no one that went for a ride wanted to run it after that.

Re: V8 vega
On mine with stock gearing ??? at the top of 2nd gear (TURBO 350) THE DRIP RAIL WOULD BLOW OFF!!

Re: V8 vega
That brings back fond memories of my youth, I remember all the V8 Vegas in the staging lanes with their windshield wiper blades duct taped down.

Re: V8 vega
The Vega was always a POS like the pinto.

Re: V8 vega
THERE, that brightened up the post and my Sunday morning!

Re: V8 vega
Yeah, Vegas, Pintos, Gremlins, Monzas and Mustang IIs were pretty horrible. But in the 70s and 80s they were what we had that were light and plentiful. They served their purpose until the 3rd gen Camaros and Fox-body Mustangs came out.

Re: V8 vega
A teenager a stout small block and a Vega street car you either had some driving skills or probably ended up dead. What a horrible street car but man what a blast.

Re: V8 vega
I still think a chassis Vega on the ground dragging big rubber is a great looking drag car.

Re: V8 vega
I apologize for the high jack. I know from experience that the wipers on a 55 Chevy will lay out on the hood at around 120 MPH.

with a 331 built out of out dated modified eliminator parts... before the stock 3.42 rear was replaced with pontiac/olds... mid 3rd gear... wipers raised off windshield and then into fourth.... then they slowly swept all the way across to other side of windshield... then when slowed down... they swept back across... floating off windshield and then back on the windshield... not sure how many MPH it ran but mathematically..... potential to go way too fast in a vega.. It is a MIRACLE that I got to grow up with my Dad alive.. he still is and still has that Vega too.... |
Re: V8 vega
Also the rear hatch would not close without slamming it. I also had constant front end alignment issues, The front end would spread apart because I had made the rad support removable. Had to add a extra brace.

Re: V8 vega
These V8 Vegas were assembled by Div 1 champ, Joe DeLorenzo in New Haven for Bob Johnson.
They were brand new cars with a warrantee. The std. engine was the 1970 LT1, also new.. The Don Hardy kit was used in the assembly Very fast little cars as you can imagine.... There's more on the 'net, I'm sure. https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/scun...y-com-t33.html |
Re: V8 vega

A big tired Vega with a flat hood is something you don’t ever see I think that might be my favorite Vega ever.
|
Re: V8 vega
I've seen that red Vega, nicely built and detailed. Runs good to boot.

Re: V8 vega
Very limited space under the hood of a Vega compared to most cars of it’s era.
|
Re: V8 vega
Even less space under the hood of my Firebird with a big block nestled between the shock towers, the carb partially under the cowl and up tight to the underside of the stock flat hood and the distributor under the windshield that can't be removed without removing the intake manifold or pulling the engine. THAT is "very limited space"

Re: V8 vega
"The Chevrolet Vega is remembered as one of General Motors' worst cars, a troublesome rust-bucket prone to gas tank fires and melting engines."
"even worse than the Pinto, many readers insisted, was the Chevrolet Vega. It sold well. Then the body started to rust. The aluminum engine started to warp. There were engine fires and mounting recalls. Horrified buyers fled, and General Motors killed the car by the late 1970s." "What an absolute pile of junk that was. It was not uncommon for the engine to start burning oil before 50,000 miles. The early models were complete rust buckets. The quality control was atrocious. And they had a reverse-hinged hood that came through the windshield in head-on collisions." As I said, a POS! |

Re: V8 vega
I think a race Vega is a great looking car but in stock form it was a horrible car. Any engine that the cylinder head seems to out weigh the assembled short block is a oddball. To this day out of all the cylinder heads I had to carry around a machine shop a fully assembled Vega head is one of the most awkward but a integrated 250 Chevy would match it. We had one customer that loved Vegas and brought several of the blocks to have sleeved you know one of those days ya just couldn’t wait to get to work.

I see mr. desk top dyno, a nobody, a computer programmer, an old man who never raced and that no one here with a clue gives him, nor his malarkey the time of day, has decided again, to reply only to comment about me.
Pathetic! |
Re: V8 vega
Knew a guy once, was brilliant with his mechanical knowledge and was a great resource. I noticed though that every time he helped, he also added snide comments or ridiculed anyone who questioned his ways. After a while I stopped seeking advice from him and I noticed that while he was good, nobody wanted to be around him due to his attitude. I saw he won a race and not a single person cheered. Nobody congratulated him and he went back to his motorhome by himself. I always wondered how he felt, getting to the top but not having anyone to enjoy it because he was so caustic to be around.
I try not to be that guy, wish others would do the same. |
