Need some advice or a solution
Need some advice or a solution I have a 1997 39 ft Fifth wheel gold Rush .so I am kind of in the market for a new Dually but as I look at them they all sit up higher than my 2005 dually to me it looks like the trailer will hit the bed . Now on My old Dually, we took off the overloads, and that worked great all these Years > As anyone ran into this situation and how did you solve the issue?
Thanks in advance |

Re: Need some advice or a solution
There are several brands. Don’t know if I am allowed to “promote” any 1 brand. But do a search for drop hangers for duallies Get about a 3” drop on rear. Gm type has replacement Torsion keys get about a 2” drop on front
This is not the slam look Drop Hangers, 2002-2010 GM 2500/3500 Trucks, 2wd/4wd, 3″ Drop I will be doing mine this fall David |

Re: Need some advice or a solution
Intead of messing with the truck suspension, remove the factory bed and install a more useful type such as this. You would have more storage, and could also add an additional fuel tank for longer range.

Re: Need some advice or a solution
I have the exact same problem on my 1980's gold rush. and my 2014 ram 2500. Back then, when these trailers were built, the trucks didn't sit nearly as high. I have already damaged my tailgate, when the trailer 'arms' contacted the top of the tailgate, and also damaged the top back corners of the truck bed from the same problem. Also the back of the trailer drags horribly when the angle is severe. (I have to maneuver very uneven terrain turning it around at my house). I am much more conscious to also look at the distance between the arms and the tailgate top while maneuvering and not just look at the mirrors at where the trailer is going .
In my case, my trailer had 4-pack leaf springs. I installed 5 pack leaf springs and that gained 1" on the rear of the trailer. Better, but still sits very uneven (low in the rear). I am now looking into installing air bags on the trailer suspension. Gold Rush Phil mentioned that yes, some people have done this. Chris Bowman, the lower hitch will get the trailer to sit level, but makes the problem I have with the arms now being even closer to the tailgate and the bed top rails.... Kp |
Re: Need some advice or a solution
My suggestion was to swap the stock bed with a "flat bed" type bed. Not a farm truck bed, but a nice one with storage, etc. I personally like that look on a dually better than the factory bed. I would think the arms would clear that.
On another not, I think you need to be about 6'4" to reach any thing in a truck bed now even a half ton. I guess that is why GM and Ford have built in steps in the sides of their HD's now. |

Don,
I have a 2002 39' GR with the "small" gooseneck, "A" frame tongue and inverted 5th. My truck is a 2012 2500HD 4x4. I dont have any clearance issues, EXCEPT when going over a berm.... Last winter, I was moving my car down to a fabricators place, and when I was backing in/turning over a berm/hump, the trailer connected with the box and tailgate.....ugh. It was a pretty significant hump in the side yard and pitch black night.... Otherwise, my 2012 has plenty of room and have never been close to hitting for the last 3 years. I also have airbags on it.
