Sixty Years Ago
My best friend and I watched our first NCAA tournament. Loyola of Chicago beat Cincinnati in OT. I have not missed one since. The best time for basketball is tonight. It’s the competitive spirit leftover from basketball that keeps me racing.

Re: Sixty Years Ago
Being from California I was fond of UCLA and the John Wooden years.

Re: Sixty Years Ago
Great tournament this year, both men’s and women’s!

Re: Sixty Years Ago
Congrats to the UCONN Men!

Re: Sixty Years Ago
Definitely one of the best times of the year. Have to agree the competitive spirit that dad and I both shared for racing is absolutely a carry over from playing.

Re: Sixty Years Ago
MJ, could be a blue state thing. One could contrast that with the UT Football celebration after beating Alabama or perhaps some rowdy fans at the Ole Miss game (but recognize Lane Kiffin is probably the most hated man in the area, to the point that the road accessing the campus sewer treatment facility is called “Kiffin Way”). In any case the passion surrounding college sports is quite a phenomenon. Recall growing up not too far from Larry; Dan Issel and Louie Dampier were big heroes, even when Pistol Pete came to town.

Re: Sixty Years Ago
Being born and raised in CT, the dominance that UCONN displayed for the entire tournament was incredible.

Re: Sixty Years Ago
Take aways from the tournaments.
Women. Refs called so many fouls, if you just grazed someone, the whistle blew. Men. What's a foul... It was great. Best thing was the refs, didn't change in the last several minutes. UConn. Men won the championship. Women didn't make the final four as they have done for the last 16 years. With all the excitement, the close games, the upsets, the blowouts, the wildest thing of all was LSU's coach Mulkey's outfits. Now, back to drag racing. |

I have been to a quite few Final Fours both as someones guest and by buying my own tickets--- no matter what team you are for its something to see everybody rooting for both teams--- quite an accomplishment to make it that far no matter which team you like--I remember one I went to in Indy and they sell team practice tickets money goes to NCAA Charity---they sold like 30,000 tickets at $20 a piece and this is just to watch one team practice ---FED 387

Re: Sixty Years Ago
I played for Lowes H.S. I went to West Georgia College with a friend off of our high school team my freshman year. Sophomore year I played at Gainesville Junior College and in March of that year Patsy and I married. I'm an Austin Peay aluminums and the athletic department paid an for an extra quarter so I could student teach. I finished in December 1972 walked in graduation spring of 1973. I was not a very good college player but good enough to be part of the team.
After college I started flying toy airplanes. |
