Radial Walk

My boy is fighting Radial walk.
We have replaced 1/2 to car with
new components. Would a rear sway
bar be of any benefit? Any recommendations
for brand or installation?

Re: Radial Walk

Can be a frustrating search

Make sure you don't discount a front end issue causing the walk. I have twice seen it stem from a front end issue working its way back through the unforgiving radial tire

When I put them on my car it had that problem I added a few more degrees of caster and it went away.

Which car and tire combo?

1971 SS/KA 340 Duster
Low 10s when required
Both Goodyear and Hoosier

I know it sounds crazy but toe has quite an effect on radial wobble. Try toeing the front end out 1/8 to 3/16. We fought it for half a season on my buddy's cutlass and it completely went away after moving the toe from in to out.

Re: Radial Walk

Toe out is potentially very dangerous.....and trust me I know.... I made a run with that condition and nearly lost it.....

I'd be very hesitant to try that....

No Toe-Out not a good idea!

I know one thing the first time it happens you’ll definitely be awake when it’s over.

A well known super stock chassis builder from Virginia way suggested the toe deal. We wouldn't have tried it if it was anyone else. It worked for us.

Re: Radial Walk

Something that's often overlooked with this problem is rear thrust . I've had several cars with this issue that squaring the rear axle in the chassis ended the wobble.
Unfortunately curing radial wobble is much like fixing the "death wobble " on Jeeps , there can be many causes from toe, caster , front to rear shock settings and even tire pressure..
I have also heard of trying the toe out solution , while I would NEVER recommend it ,if it solves the problem ,I would suspect tire pressure it be an issue.

What pressure are you trying to run in the back tires.

We have run from 12 to 19 in one-pound increments.

Before we had problems we ran 17 to 18 normally.

We had that on my son's Chevy II when he first bought it. He said it didn't feel all that bad but watching it from the starting line was terrifying 😳. We just went back to bias ply.

12 is at the upper end of what I can run in my tires. Hoosier 13.5 x 31.5 radial sometimes it will rock and roll at the top end a bit but not every run and sometimes not at all at certain tracks. I Never run more that 12.5.

Fought it mightily on a very well-built Cavalier GT car. Tried everything and could never get completely rid of it. Was sent to Mike Crutchfield with the promise that Phoenix drive tires would eliminate the condition and they did.

I sure appreciate all the sage advice!!

This week we are rebuilding the front end again
and replacing the struts with some with Heim ends to help
adjustment ability.

We are going to put on rear roll bar as well.

Hi John We have had this issue on several SS cars and by tightening up the front shocks , it eliminated the bounce or wobble. most racers run their front shocks on the lose side , I think. this was not at the launch, but going down track where the problem is ?? Thanks Bob
