Yeah, gee whiz...That extra lane will take up a lot of room in the park.
Just happens to run all the way down through Gila River tribal land too.
I'll bet, when it's all said and done , there's still room for an entertainment complex on the property. ;-)

What does this mean for the future of Division 7?

Is LVMS destined to be the "ONLY" venue hosting Divisional and National events? The CA strips seem to be constantly targeted for "Imminent Domain" progress.

-Frustrated-

Fortunately there are 6 National events presently in division 7. Divisional races seem to be coming and going.

Move to Vegas. 4 races in your backyard. Pomona and Bakersfield are 4 1/2 hours away. Phoenix for now is 5. No state tax and no rain. Be careful of the buffets that never end.

I think that most of us living in or near Phoenix knew this was coming. The community is building around the drag strip. I've heard comments like "the casino makes more money in 2 days than the drag strip makes all year". Lots of room to build a new drag strip but the problem is making it a good investment for someone.

I LOVE this site. You guys are great!

I couldn't knock the rust off my old UBB skills to do multiple quotes in this post, so I'll just respond to y'all like this...because HEY!, we've got time, right?

Don, TN is an awesome state, our Gov. will likely receive an honorable mention for a realtor award in TN

Paul, I really like Las Vegas for those reasons, but my wife is like a candle..she melts in the heat, I guess I could hook up a solar-powered AC unit for an arctic setting :D still concerned about the Division schedule past '23 though.

Billy, all good here, I'm RED til I'm dead..pragmatically of course.

J.Heath, I'm totally intrigued by the ACTING position. Got me wonderin what's the requirements.

and Mark, when is it best to call you? I have a feeling we may have actually talked before about an Olds Omega.

I'm too crazy and love S/SS too much to fold or give up and I reeeeeeally don't want to delete my Signature.

If it's utilized and advertised properly I don't see how it shouldn't be, especially in Arizona where you don't have to worry about 10 rainouts per year like other areas of the country. It seems as if the owners of certain tracks care more about its value to prospective buyers than its success as a venue. If more die-hard racers owned tracks it might be different?

Even when you have a great promoter/owner like Ozzy there are challenges,

http://www.competitionplus.com/drag-...rth-the-reward

Best do all you can to support your track, unfortunately the closest tracks for me are 150-200 miles away so I’m looking for a cheap bracket car to race and maybe get my 13 year old grandson into the new Jr Street program (13 YO racing with adult in the car).

Really another track being closed down .... enjoy those over inflated salaries while you can . No tracks , no racing no money for the nhra brass period .....Can they make that kind of money just with the 2 tracks they own being Indy & Gainsville ???

Wouldn`t it be great if a drag racing organization was run by "more die hard drag racers," (or at least EX drag racers), or at least people with SOME background or interest, in drag racing? For a non profit organization, the suits in Glendora seem to be doing OK. $200,000 severance pay per year for Compton? Must be nice.

I wonder if Graham Light is the only one amongst them who has even driven a race car or worked at a dragstrip?

I guess reactivating Speedworld isn't an option? I saw a video from within the past year or so that shows it all overgrown.

That was a nice track too. I think they closed it up for back taxes. I wonder how much taxes they are collecting now?

I enjoyed Speedworld. Had a lot of fun there and it was a lot closer than Firebird and half the distance from Tucson for me.
Only problems I ever had was trying to rooms when baseball training camps were in session.

Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…

I do not believe them. I worked and race at Wild Horse from 2001 to 2020. The tribe did not us there. Charley Allen use to have the track. When it was time to renew the lease on the property the tribe refused to agree. As a result, the track was closed down for a few years.
I do not believe that the freeway needs the land for construction. If you have ever been to the track you know how far it is from the freeway. The east race track is close to the freeway. Next is the lake for the boat racing. Then the bleachers before you get to the track. The track is about 1/4 of a mile from the freeway.
The county will never let anyone reopen Speedworld. They were behind on taxes, and they made a lot of changes on the property that were against the county rules.
I guess I stopped racing at the right time.

That's a better (err, quality, not subject matter) video, nice work with the drone and shots showing racing from the same angles.

Sounds like the Indians are only in it for the money and not very interested in preserving a place to race. Ashcroft BC (don't make me try to spell that track name!) was on reserve land too. Looks pretty much like that Speedworld video now.

Speedworld's closing can all be traced back to Dan Mathews!

Mike, I think there's some new houses being built down around Houghton Rd. ;-)

Raul, I agree. My first thoughts..They wanted an out, and now they've got it with ADOT.
It doesn't match up to the cash flow of their surrounding businesses.

I heard they're building a new interchange..For what? Rt.347 ? Looks like plenty of unused land for that , still.

When this track was built 40 years ago, how far away from the population was it? The city has grown out to it. Possibly someone could go that distance out into the dessert and build another track, until the city encroaches in another 40 years.

What about the property adjacent to Phoenix Raceway?

There's plenty of land in the area west of the Raceway. Granted, it's parking lots, but there's plenty of room there. HELL, even one of the access roads in the lots is named Dragstrip Rd.!! Lay the strip down on W. South Mountain Ave., jus sayin...

So far, I haven't found out what the definite plan is for this "interchange". Yet, the track must close next February.
Nothing was even mentioned about it, a year and a half ago.
None of these proposals would take up much of the track land , if at all.

In the late 60s Dragstrip Rd was the dragstrip at Phoenix International Raceway. The shutdown area went into the oval track. Several people were killed trying to negotiate the turn/s and the dragstrip was shut down. Often wondered why some larger Nascar tracks could not build a dragstrip within their complex. I often refer back to one of the best tracks of it's time, Ontario Motor Speedway which had a dragstrip on pit road of the oval track. Would not take a lot of expendature to start one up also.

Unfortunately Phoenix International Raceway is now owned by NASCAR, and they have previously shown to have zero interest in drag racing. If someone like Bruton Smith owned the place it might be a different story.

I've heard someone is renting the track that weekend to hold the race, anyone know if it is true? Are they holding any other drag racing?
