Yeah, gee whiz...That extra lane will take up a lot of room in the park. Just happens to run all the way down through Gila River tribal land too. I'll bet, when it's all said and done , there's still room for an entertainment complex on the property. ;-) |

Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
What does this mean for the future of Division 7?
Is LVMS destined to be the "ONLY" venue hosting Divisional and National events? The CA strips seem to be constantly targeted for "Imminent Domain" progress. -Frustrated- |

Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
I think that most of us living in or near Phoenix knew this was coming. The community is building around the drag strip. I've heard comments like "the casino makes more money in 2 days than the drag strip makes all year". Lots of room to build a new drag strip but the problem is making it a good investment for someone.

Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
I LOVE this site. You guys are great!
I couldn't knock the rust off my old UBB skills to do multiple quotes in this post, so I'll just respond to y'all like this...because HEY!, we've got time, right? Don, TN is an awesome state, our Gov. will likely receive an honorable mention for a realtor award in TN  Paul, I really like Las Vegas for those reasons, but my wife is like a candle..she melts in the heat, I guess I could hook up a solar-powered AC unit for an arctic setting :D still concerned about the Division schedule past '23 though. Billy, all good here, I'm RED til I'm dead..pragmatically of course. J.Heath, I'm totally intrigued by the ACTING position. Got me wonderin what's the requirements. and Mark, when is it best to call you? I have a feeling we may have actually talked before about an Olds Omega. I'm too crazy and love S/SS too much to fold or give up and I reeeeeeally don't want to delete my Signature. |

Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
Even when you have a great promoter/owner like Ozzy there are challenges,
http://www.competitionplus.com/drag-...rth-the-reward Best do all you can to support your track, unfortunately the closest tracks for me are 150-200 miles away so I’m looking for a cheap bracket car to race and maybe get my 13 year old grandson into the new Jr Street program (13 YO racing with adult in the car). |
Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
Really another track being closed down .... enjoy those over inflated salaries while you can . No tracks , no racing no money for the nhra brass period .....Can they make that kind of money just with the 2 tracks they own being Indy & Gainsville ???

Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
I wonder if Graham Light is the only one amongst them who has even driven a race car or worked at a dragstrip?
I guess reactivating Speedworld isn't an option? I saw a video from within the past year or so that shows it all overgrown. |

That was a nice track too. I think they closed it up for back taxes. I wonder how much taxes they are collecting now? Paul |

Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
I enjoyed Speedworld. Had a lot of fun there and it was a lot closer than Firebird and half the distance from Tucson for me.
Only problems I ever had was trying to rooms when baseball training camps were in session. |
Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
I do not believe them. I worked and race at Wild Horse from 2001 to 2020. The tribe did not us there. Charley Allen use to have the track. When it was time to renew the lease on the property the tribe refused to agree. As a result, the track was closed down for a few years.
I do not believe that the freeway needs the land for construction. If you have ever been to the track you know how far it is from the freeway. The east race track is close to the freeway. Next is the lake for the boat racing. Then the bleachers before you get to the track. The track is about 1/4 of a mile from the freeway. The county will never let anyone reopen Speedworld. They were behind on taxes, and they made a lot of changes on the property that were against the county rules. I guess I stopped racing at the right time. Raul |
Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
That's a better (err, quality, not subject matter) video, nice work with the drone and shots showing racing from the same angles.
Sounds like the Indians are only in it for the money and not very interested in preserving a place to race. Ashcroft BC (don't make me try to spell that track name!) was on reserve land too. Looks pretty much like that Speedworld video now. |
Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
Speedworld's closing can all be traced back to Dan Mathews!

Sounds like the problem wasn't really the dragstrip part of his venture.

Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
Mike, I think there's some new houses being built down around Houghton Rd. ;-)
Raul, I agree. My first thoughts..They wanted an out, and now they've got it with ADOT. It doesn't match up to the cash flow of their surrounding businesses. I heard they're building a new interchange..For what? Rt.347 ? Looks like plenty of unused land for that , still. https://goo.gl/maps/zGrUbhaL4x39jMNq8 |

New casino/hotel with a lakeside view...

Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
When this track was built 40 years ago, how far away from the population was it? The city has grown out to it. Possibly someone could go that distance out into the dessert and build another track, until the city encroaches in another 40 years.

Losing Chicago/Joliet, Houston/Baytown, Phoenix/White Horse Pass, the loss of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th largest US markets?
|
Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
Don't forget Atlanta. Another large market.

Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
What about the property adjacent to Phoenix Raceway?
There's plenty of land in the area west of the Raceway. Granted, it's parking lots, but there's plenty of room there. HELL, even one of the access roads in the lots is named Dragstrip Rd.!! Lay the strip down on W. South Mountain Ave., jus sayin... |
Re: Wild Horse Pass in AZ closing…
So far, I haven't found out what the definite plan is for this "interchange". Yet, the track must close next February.
Nothing was even mentioned about it, a year and a half ago. None of these proposals would take up much of the track land , if at all. https://www.inmaricopa.com/diamond-i...-for-347-i-10/ |

Joliet is not on the schedule I looked at yesterday. I hope it was just missed. I plan on attending. 😊👍
