Potential 68 Camaro Stocker Build
I just assembled this car this year for a street strip deal, but I am thinking I might make a stocker out of it.
I have looked at what combos I can choose from. At this point I am looking at keeping it a automatic. So probably choosing between a 350 build or 396 build and if there is any advantage to a 327 I would look at that also. Can I get some input on the pluses or minuses of those combos, trying to decide which way to go. The car is a 68 with all new panels I have not had time to cut the marker lights in yet. Thx in advance. I can’t seem to post pictures from my iPad it keeps turning them upside down |

Ok so 295hp 350 cid it is with a auto
So started gathering parts, picked up 3 sets of correct number heads with no previous work done to them, so will see which are the nicest for starters. |
Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
Think I would consider 327/275 either stick(274) or auto(270).

Suggest you contact Gale Pinkston. He can set you up.

Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
Not much excitement here for this combo ,Rory. Some guys have a 50 year head start on you. Just be prepared for lots of heads up runs, if you go rounds in these classes.

Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
Adam Davis has 327 combo for sale in parts section

Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
Ok thanks I will have a closer look at that then if you guys figure that may be a better way to go
Lol. I did realize yes probably way late to the program with this combo, just like the Camaro and wanted to do a stocker to have some fun and more personal challenges and gains on it more than anything …….but not a high maintenance one or so I thought maybe I will get bored . Anyway I thought maybe the 350/295 being it was factored to 286 hp had some room …..? But I think any class I look at with the car will put me in more popular classes were heads will be more common, unless I tried the 2 bbl 327 210 hp deal don’t know if there is any advantage to that . |
Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
Yeah, it's fine..Better with aftermarket heads IMO
Stick shift will keep you out of trouble, except around BG and Div. 3 Either that, or become real good at working the ladder. ;-) Good luck |
Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
How about a 396 325 combo ? Out west ‘ Diamond ‘ Jim Meador has a D/sa Camaro that runs very strong ….

Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
Thanks Mark I will never turn down luck 🍀
Yes I like 396s a lot and have about 3 blocks or so, but for some reason I have small block on the brain for this project, so far anyway. Just found a 327 block so will see here shortly what one is getting the go. Thanks guys for the input |
Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
I was looking for aftermarket cranks allowed for the 327 but I didn’t see any on the info site ?
Thx |

Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
The Callies approved crankshaft is probably one of the best crankshafts for the SBC. Speedway Motors sells it at a lower price through Ebay.

Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
Thanks guys I should have looked there
Classracer info is so handy I look at it all the time instead Thx |
Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
Rory, good luck with pursuing your stocker dream. I have wanted to do something similar for a few years as I no longer bracket race. Living in Canada means far less opportunities to race in legitimate Stock/ Super Stock races and lots of travel. We also have to pay about 1.5 times as much or more for parts. Post pics when you can, so I can enjoy vicariously the adventure you are embarking on.

Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
Hey Tim
Thanks !!! I wanted to build and play with one forever , built one when I was done with the funny car racing, I built a nice 85 Camaro stocker from Scratch put all the best stuff in it, drove it around the yard and handed the keys over to a new owner, I had just built a new shop for the business and wasn’t able to enjoy it the car , didn’t have time for it. Even when I had the funny car I spent a bunch of time looking at old stockers in the pit. Anyways attempted a couple others, ended up not finishing and getting a dragster or two, etc., but keep coming back to really wanting a old stocker Camaro, so I put this together with a 383 and 700r4 this year and had some fairly laid back fun, so I am pretty excited about turning it into a stocker now and seeing what we can do with it, and having some fun along the way and travelling a bit. I will post some pictures for sure and some with what the car looked like when I picked it up in April, don’t think it had seen the road for 20 or 30 years. Adventure for sure. |
Re: Potential 68 Camaro Stocker
I have both a 10 and 12 bolt
Will a 10 bolt work with the 327 auto combo fine ? As I was thinking a little lighter and a little less turning mass as long as a built up one is tough enough ? Or just use the 12 ? Thx |
