Car Name Memories

Brutus. Eastern Raider. Yankee Peddler. Strip Poker. Names from a period when the cars were the stars. Today, it’s more about the people than anything else, which is probably what it should be, but oh those names, they defined the car and the driver.

Re: Car Name Memories

Having come of age in the era of most race cars having names I toyed with a couple for my Willys , none that ever came to life
It took an offhand comment from a certain ProStock racer from Malvern to coin the
" Bullets to Spare " name that the Willys and now the Vette wear.
After breaking an engine [AMC back then] the first day of a Maple Grove divisional race I went home and thrashed an engine together out of whatever I had .
When I got back the next day ,I was pitted next to Paul Thimm and Kevin Robb . Jenkins was there with them and casually walked by my car and said, How many spare AMC bullets do you have ?
Bill's unwitting contribution to my racing program !

Re: Car Name Memories

My Dad's 1968 Camaro he named Super Rat. 427 Big Block Car (so he claimed, is the story). He ran it in SS/EA, SS/DA & B/MP, . He ran this car at South Glens Falls Dragway in South Glens Falls New York back in the 70's. I have a certificate from the track showing it ran 10.97 in SS/EA. Quite fast for those times! I still remember the song on the radio the night he sold it as it was towed away down the driveway. I was only 10 years old at the time, but man, it sure had an impact on me.

On the Rat theme, my dad's old car Big Daddy Rat, he also raced against Black Rat and Dynamic Rat which were both 1st gen Camaros. There was a Dodge Dart with a BBC named Rat Poison.

Re: Car Name Memories

Back in our Orange County and Riverside Raceway bracket racing days, I had a white '63 Chevy Bel Air 2dr post car named Rapid Transit. It had a 409 with an A-1 Powerglide, a 12 bolt out of a Chevelle, and 4.56 gears. It ran 12.20's on a not real good day, but with a little tuning and fudging, it went 11.91 at about 9 PM at the County one night. It was a pretty good 12.45-12.60 car at Riverside. It had been a race car since about 1968, and both wind wings had San Fernando Drag Strip winner stickers. I sold it to one of my best buddies in San Diego, he has a rather docile big W motor in it, and it goes 11.75 most of the time. He just is in the process of getting it painted Ermine White, and it's getting some new moldings and stuff to finish it up. Glad its still around! P.S. I still have the 409 engine out of it.

Re: Car Name Memories

Continuing the "RAT" theme, at Mission Raceway in the 70s, there was a 396 66 Chevelle with "Aristo-RAT" lettered on the doors. Other locals included "Suddenly", "Blue Heaven" Last Chance" "Sweet Revenge", "Street Kleaner", "Frantic Affair", "Kid Dyno Mite", "Catch 22", "Rapid Rickshaw", "Tantrum", "Infinity", "Green Mosquito", "Blue Bolt", "Gold Rush" and "Fido Wagon" , among many others. Even if you didn`t know who the owner or driver was, chances are the car name stuck in your head. Obviously some stuck in mine!

Jimmy was a great guy...and so was his buddy Terry Curkeet. My one and only trip to Brainerd resulted in a tear down . Terry tore my car down and assembled it for a fifth of whiskey. What a deal ? I was politely asked to never come back....LOL....inside joke there folks...The 66 wagon that Jimmy bought from Cal Method was named Financial Burden....After stock qualifying was completed Jimmy and crew would always stop at the first bar they saw....Those guys had a lot of fun. Lyn, thanks for the trip down memory lane....

Alex was one of the good ones.

When I was facing a 12+ Hour Kidney Cancer Surgery and likely
Death.....Alex encouraged me and told me I would get through it!

I sure wished I had got to know him more....But we lived on opposite
sides of world.

Not a car "name", but there was a wagon that ran at the old Houston track that I'll never forget. It had "SPONSORED BY WEAKLY SALARY" on the quarter panels.
