He could have gotten in on Owners points.

Or, as a past World Champion (from about 1970) when winning the Supernationals in Ontario, California was the criteria for holding the title. I asked the same question and that was the unofficial explanation.

Wasn't the World Champs, the world finals winners.

I saw that and was very imperssed! I was having fun looking at all the Junior Stock photo's that Travis Miller put on for us and then I saw Marvin Ripes name on the qualifying sheet for Vegas and almost had a double take. Anybody know how young that man is? Gotta be about 70?

I don't know about most of you, but I'd be careful what's wished for. I'm still working for my first grade points. However let's look at the criteria:

Marv Ripes... his name is synonomous with Stock and Jr. Stock (about the time the wheel was invented)

A-1 Transmissions.... his company, that's been around since the dark ages

The Ripes/A-1 history in the sport....always a sportsman supporter... never part of the pros (the sell-out crowd).

He hasn't run in years and has decided to make a go at it again (which I myself think is really cool!!).

IMHO, it may be a double edge sword that he runs with no grade points BECAUSE if he weren't allowed, it would signal that the TRADITIONAL sportsman drag racers (REAL class cars) are no longer "marketable" with our fate truly sealed. BUT letting him run can only help the "cause" of the traditional sportsman, showing the "new" NHRA still knows where they came from and what's right for them.

Amen Gary.

I bought a cast iron powerglide and converter from Marv in 1973. It put me out about $400.00 I believe. But then my Reher and Morrison engine cost $1900.00 complete manifold to pan.

Hey! That's Brian Taits Wagon he's driving. Looks like the old buzzard has qualified it better that Tait has to date. See old racers never die they get wagons!
I would have to say he got in on owner points. Doesn't A-1 pay contengency? Why the complaining?

Was it not Marv Ripes that was the first successful person to make a glide work along with his converters?

Go Mikey M.

He got in legally !!!
Marv WON Stock at the 1970 SuperNationals in Ontario,Ca. in a 1957 Corvette at 13.07 / 78.87 MPH !!!

Re: Blast From The Past

GO MARVIN. Its good for the sport to have an older racer manufacturer back in a car supporting Sportsman racing. A man you could count on at all times. When he told me the convertor was on a plane, I could just leave for the airport. IT WAS THERE. That kind of businessman is the back bone of Sportsman racing and sponsors. THANKS MARV! This race can be yours.

The Media Guide doesn't give the runner ups ! SAD......you think NHRA would expand the Media Guide to show the runnerups ! I've got the 1998 Version of the Media Guide....I doubt they have updated the later issues.

Re: Blast From The Past

Geez...Marv Ripes
He killed me way back when ,when he reset the I/S record in his 57 Vette (I think) from 12.80 to 12.20 on a bet. Killed me as my 59 250HP fuelie could only run 12.40.
I hated those reset indexes on national records.
