nhra stock needs electric car class
Just read a article that by 2030 there will be no fossil fuel powered cars allowed to be sold in demark and they are pushing for the whole EU to do the same. so should nhra get ahead of this and start putting electric cars in the stock class guides?

This ain't Denmark.
And I won't have an electric car, race or otherwise. |
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Absolutely NOT!

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
I'd rather hear playing cards on my bicycle spokes..

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
No. This is America. We need to dig our heels in.

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Given that the question was "Should the NHRA have electric car classes?" (not "Should NHRA require us to drive electric cars" the answer is yes. They are dealer available, built in batches over 50 units and street legal so why not? I've seen Teslas in Sportsman and they are quite quick. Creepy quiet, agreed.

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
You know the batteries are not that environmentally friendly so why not do like an electric railway or streetcar and just run two power strips, one down each lane.... this will also help keep cars away from the wall and centerline. Since we are talking safety here no sense in exposing the drivers to the hazards of the car, they could sit in the grandstands and control their cars remotely.... fans will love seeing "self driving" in effect.
But land is too valuable. It is needed to house all the new immigrants. Maybe the track should be cut back some... to about 100 feet and the cars scaled down to say... 1/32nd the size. This reduced size could possibly allow the track to be enclosed making rainouts far less of a problem. :) |

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Does anyone remember when IHRA allowed turbocharged cars in Pro Stock? Buddy Ingersol of turbocharged fame ran one of the quickest Pro Stock cars that year. Larry Carrier, owner of IHRA liked to go up into the stands incognito and talk to fans. He soon found out the fans did not care for Buddy's car in Pro Stock. Yes it showed quick numbers on the scoreboards but it did not make "loud race car sounds" like the rest of the field. Based on the result of what a lot of the fans told him, Larry made the decision to do away with turbocharged cars in Pro Stock.
Conclusion....A race car without the noise soon loses the interest of the spectators. |
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
No way, save that european stuff for elsewhere, BUT, before I was old enough to drive, my Revell slot cars taught me about gearing, brushes, tire softening, glue burnouts, and other stuff. Sounds as exciting as watching grass grow. John Kissel

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Why? So we can save the planet with electric cars?? Take a look around, fossil fuels are not killing us.

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Pass! Something is always ROTTEN in Denmark.....
|
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Electric Car Classes will happen anyway...
Other racing venues are starting them. Already a few cars are purpose built. |
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
NHRA or others could DUB top fuel burnout and run recordings during the runs...…..could happen!!

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Ya but the fans like the pro classes for the noise , smell , vibrations , fire , speed , crashes , and motors blowing up . Electric cars are just not as fun. They can only check off 1 box " speed " . Have you ever had one blow up in flames ? Well I had a transformer blow up on the telephone pole in front of my house one day , nice little show . Go ahead and make a class VCD/A,b,c etc or bracket VDC 1 for dragsters & 2 for door cars etc . If I cant race my car I'm out .

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Dumb asses think that electric power is green because it's coming out of a plug, like it's all coming from windfarms or hydroelectric.. Go to a power plant during peak demand and see how much natural gas is being used. The one I went to used a lot. Not to mention the battery disposal problem. So, no electric racing for me.

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Travis, like your story, but applying spectator arguments to sportsman at nationals or any divisional event, nah, there are no spectators to drive away.
I would love to see an electric class in stock or comp. It is time to start experimenting, and the purple Camaro was a great start that should have moved from exhibition to some type of class. But hey, it's NHRA, none of the racers want any change and the NHRA has no vision. Killed PST, yet trucks are still selling, how is FS going to stay relevant in 5 yrs when there are no new combos? Fans aren't going to stay around ling for a stagnant class. If I was building a Jr. Dragster, thhat Jegs electric kit is an awesome option. If JD is really feeding participation, the next gen is growing up with an electric option and experience. I think comp would be a good fit, for innovation, or stock, to keep things limited as the tech evolves. |

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Not trying to hijack the thread with emissions talk however, not everyone understands that EV's are not totally clean.
If you look at the actual carbon footprint of a electric vehicle it is not all that clean. I have been retired from a large natural gas company for a number of years now however, before I retired our company looked at it and it did not even make a cleaner footprint than some of the best emissions of some gasoline vehicles. That was when there were more coal generation units and not as many wind farms generating electricity then as there is now however, I doubt there is still a net better footprint for the EV's as the gas vehicle emissions have also been improved. Most think that since an EV is plugged into an outlet there is no emissions however, most of the electricity in the USA is still generated from fossil fuels. Natural gas is the cleanest of the generation from fossil fuels and that is most of what is used today. There is not enough land and wind to use windmills for the current electricity needs of the USA and hydroelectric is being abandoned in the west. Plus the wind does not blow every day. I do not think in my lifetime NHRA will move to EV classes. Probably will be experimental show vehicles as filler for the show. Just My 2 Cents Rick Cates Canyon, TX |
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
We will see if any of the manufacturers will send in specs . NHRA will need to have safety standards in place to keep everyone safe while servicing these cars or if they crash . Also will be interesting how the batteries will be charged between rounds .

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Crash an electric car and the hazards involved and procedures for track safety personnel are completely different.
If you think people leave the stands to find something else to do when the dot 90 cars run, you ain't seen nothing yet. There may be potential fans for electric car drag racing, but they aren't at national events or divisionals. Try to run them there and they'll run off the spectators that they have. They might get some interest from geeks and nerds who believe the internal combustion engine is dead and fossil fuels are killing everyone. Try some electric car only events and see how it works before screwing up what you have any more than it already is. We'll be lucky to survive the year in one piece as it is. |

Why don't we all just stare at our phones?

Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
63Corvette said: "Plus the wind does not blow every day." But electric cars do!!!
In the spirit of capitalism and free enterprise, I'd say sure. NHRA is allowed to "make" money any legal way they want. But electric cars only exist because they (and solar, and etc.) are subsidized by the government (I.E. The TAXPAYERS). They would otherwise disappear because of the law of supply and demand. Years ago, I heard the Lydon & Johnson (I hope that's the right name.) SS/AA Cuda idling at 1800 rpm (I could see the tach while I soaked it in from behind.) at the top of the staging lanes at Maple Grove. There were no other cars or people around. Something tells me an electric car wouldn't provide the same memory. |
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
NHRA should make a class for all the electric cars that Denmark produces, which I'm guessing might be zero.
|
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Lets see them "hot lap" them. How much drain is there in a full throttle 1/4 mile pass and how long do they take to recharge?
|
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
I hope Jeff Lane sees this thread. He has been at a couple of events with an eCopo and made some runs. He might have some input on battery usage and turn around time.
I think they are coming at some point. Maybe not in my lifetime. But who knows??? |
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
I just don't see the hate for electric cars joining us... You DONT have to to own one... just like you dont have to own a 69 camaro big block car... you can run a front wheel drive monte carlo if you want.... but why not let em race.. they'll have their advantages.. they'll have their disadvantages.. but they're just another combo in the class.. They'll have to have their own rules to regulate them.. and they'll have to figure out how to police them.. but to me.. as long as it's the actual production cars that are added to the book. (i.e. Tesla) or any other fully electric cars out there I would think they would be more legal than the current Cobra Jet, Drag Pack, and Copo combos we've all come to accept...
This question wasn't "NHRA needs to abandon their current classes and go fully electric!" it was simply NHRA should add a class for these cars to what they already have.... |
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
As long as they can pass fuel check in stock/super stock I'm OK with them.
|
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Finally an opportunity to exploit my years of Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) experience for profit... only somewhat tongue in cheek, LOL! :)
|
Re: nhra stock needs electric car class
Tear downs would be fun to watch. The tech guys will be catching dudes with bigger batteries in the stock cases, or pushing more voltage than allowed, the same way they cheat in RC car racing!......lol
