Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Hi ,
I know a lot here run either Hoosier or Goodyear radial slicks What lap life are you achieving ? Car is 3780lbs Plymouth Satellite 680hp big block , 4.1 gear transbrake , 10" rim I currently run MT pro bracket radial 29.5x10.5 but there is none newer than 2016 available here in Oz and no idea if newer coming . I would like to see 100-125 passes minimum . This is bracket racing car runs high 10.20s , 1.42-1.44 sixty . If there was a true 29" radial i would be happy , quickest pass ever was on a 28"PBR , and think the 30" may be just a tad too tall . I have run Hoosier 275s before but only got 70-85 passes . Never run Goodyear . TIA Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
I run the Hoosier 30 x 9 C07 radial on a car that performs almost exactly the same as yours, and I get 150-200 runs from them. I also have a 10" rim and run 17 psi.
I do a very short burnout with no line lock and the tires perform great through their entire life. |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
150-200 runs with Goodyear 30x9. Pretty much any new radial shouldn’t need a whole lot of burnout.
|
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Thanks guys .
If I can get that many passes I will be good for a season . They are over $400 each here so got to help the budget . Looks like I will go the Hoosier , I know the distributor has just got a new delivery so they cant be too old . Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Goodyears give me 175/200 runs and still have check holes. Best 60' low 1.28's 3250# car 10'' wheel, NHRA A/SA six pack. 92 5/8 roll out also available in 94'' roll out
|
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
thanks Larry .
I believe they only have the 1 Goodyear available here , will double check Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
ok
thanks everyone . Bought the Hoosier 30x10.5 R15 , 92 rollout . Only tyre I could get that was not sitting too long , GY was 94 . Shorter tyre should help , PBR was 94.5 . Will start @ 19 1/4 psi and shock settings as used before . If I can sit low 1.40s I will be happy Darn the $ exchange busted the price out . Better get a season of racing . Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
G,day Tex,
What p/no tyre was that mate if you don't mind? Cheers Paul |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
I'd guess it was the 18215.
The 18214 also fits the description, but if looking for longest possible life, I wouldn't use the 'lightweight' tire. |

Paul , I bought it from Hoosier Aust here in Sydney Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
G,day Tex,
Thanks very much for that! Am using the 18170 bias slick, would like to try a radial at some point maybe, the slick probably grows more than the radial, that one would probably be close to the same at speed? Good luck with it. Cheers Paul |

Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
I tested Hoosier, Goodyear, and Mickey Thompson 13” radials during a track rental on my SS/JA Firebird. Same day, same lane, all within about an hour. Had been running Hoosier. I bought more rear wheels, so I could mount them all at once. All new tires. 2 Baseline runs with the Hoosiers. Next, I put the MTs on. Hit harder when I let go of the button. As far as we could tell the Hoosiers were “dead hooking”. Certainly had a different feel. MT was a solid tenth, almost a MPH faster. My reaction times were faster too. Hoosier back on, slowed back down.
Put the Goodyears on, felt like it hit harder again. All incremental times slowed. MTs back on, all picked back up. They still hook when cord starts to show. Never had them seem to “go away”. Told myself “probably will wear out faster”. Nope. I run them on 14” wide wheels, 21 to 24 psi. Don’t need a big burnout. I run them until wear holes have been gone for a couple of races. If I Don’t test a lot, and don’t run many out of division races, they last all season. I found wheels one inch wider than the tread area, and 21 to 24 psi air to be quickest on my car. I just vary the air to adjust my lights. Always hooks. No prep, no problem. I last raced in 2017, probably need to buy tires if I get to race any this year. And, seat belts. LOL |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Thanks Ed ,
This will be my first go around with these particular Hoosier . As noted here in Oz there is limited choice . Best sixty is 1.42 . Though my Plymouth is kind of similar suspension and hp i certainly dont have the gearing most of you St/SSt racers do . And the extra 100lb of World block doesnt help . There is no t&t days till the 15th Nov , will see how it goes then . Weather is heating up . I will have to try highed psi for sure Thanks again for all the i put Tex |

Even at 17, I still wear the centers out first but I really don't want to run less. I've been using 17 for at least 3 seasons and haven't seen any ill effects, although I usually only check them before the first and second passes so I may end up closer to 18 by the end of the day. |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Might try wider wheels, Tony.

Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
I run 13.5 x31.5 Hoosiers radials on my car and have for quite a few years. I get well over 100 runs on a set. I run between 12 and 14 lbs air pressure. If I go higher they seem to wobble more. After what Ed Weight said I might have to try a set of MT’s next. I ran a worn out set with almost no holes at Rockingham a couple of weeks ago and they worked perfect when some were complaining about traction. My short times were almost the same every round.

I could never get something that tall under my car . Had to shim diff back 1/4" just to get 30s in there . Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Yes, Darren, same rollout. Different size tires would not be a valid test.

Sorry, did not expect that size tires in your class.

Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
When the truck would hook with a stick in it on the Radial tires it was way quicker than the bias tires.
|
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Guys I know that tried radials with a stick, never knew if it was going to hook. Faster when they did.

Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
well finally got out to a T&T last night .
5 passes . It was warm low 90s down to low 80s with humidity in the teens . Was hard to get car cool , especially with the 30 minute traffic jam on the freeway on way in . was around 190deg engine most passes DA was 2840 down to 2250 between 6.17PM and 9.12PM Any hoo . First 2 passes was like oh my god , very slow sixty /et( 1.48/10.48) but mph was normal at 1/8 and 1/4 . OK new tyres . PSI started @ 19 1/4 then 20 psi , shock settings as per normal 3rd pass 21psi and bigger burnout . 1.46/10.39/128.89 . That's better 4th pass 22psi same burnout . 1.46/10.40/128.37 . Tyre face looked better across 5th pass 22psi same burnout . 1.45/10.38/128.47 . Tyre face looks about right . Track championship round next weekend . Tyre feels good , I hope it will come in a little more , car has been 1.42/43. I know I can dial to this . Thanks for all the feedback/replies . Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
this is first or second pass
https://cacklingpipes.zenfolio.com/p513758923/edd3a9dde 4th pass https://cacklingpipes.zenfolio.com/p513758923/edd3a9dd4 5th pass https://cacklingpipes.zenfolio.com/p513758923/edd3a9dd8 Looking at tyre in 4th pass may need a little more pressure ? Anyone running around 23psi with the Hoosier ? Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Keep adding air till the 60' drops, you may be able to run 24-25 psi...gsa612

Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
thanks GSA ,
will try 23 in 2nd qual Saturday . Have a 1/8 mile private club meeting the following week . More testing then with psi Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Final instalment :)
Ran track championship round , 4 passes . dang red eliminator round 1 . Ran on Saturday , 1/8th mile races , 8 passes . Tyres seem happiest at 23psi , did try 24 for 2 passes no improvement . This is my take on the runs . The Hoosier is slower than the Pro Bracket Radial , 0.02 - 0.03 slower in sixty and all way down track . MPH is very similar . If it spins , did twice , it does not recover as well as the PBR . One spin I expected due to poor burnout , car corkscrewed in burnout . They do need a reasonable burnout with my car . No just light haze them . It is probably more sensitive to track prep . I am sure track champ rounds are better than T&T and private days where you wont see them drag the track during the day unless there is oil down . The Hoosier has been really consistent . Doubt I will race Dec final meeting , 4th place but cannot get into top 2 . Will probably run in January national grp 1 meeting . But will also be HOT , but track prep will be at its best . thanks again , Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Just a little update .
Ran 2 weeks ago at national grp 1 ihra event . Weather was damp leading into event and on qualifying day . Temp was 80s , GOW 100-108 . DA 2800-3500 or so Friday track seemed to have minimal prep . Blew the tyres off first pass , 2,75 sixty , shifted into 2nd in the sixty 2nd pass sort of hooked , 1.745 sixty , 10.80 @126 pass . So lost 3/10s in sixty but got down track Saturday was the same weather Rnd1 took the win . 1.47 sixty . Dialed 10.50 went 10.53@117 on brakes . Ok got something to dial against Famous last words . Blew the tyres off again , in fact a mate said there was smoke off tyres like a burnout . The cherry didnt help So i guess these Hoosiers arent liking my Plymouth , transbrake whatever ? Wint be out for a few more weeks , work situation . May have to try footbraking ? Not sure about another $1200 on tyres . Tex |
Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
The radials will do that, but if you work on your car to make them work you will be rewarded.
The front suspension is where it's at. Needs to move freely to transfer the weight. |

Re: Drag radial life/ max passes ?
Lenny , Ed
thanks for the response . I have only ever run radials on the Plymouth , bought it in 2007 . Never had this issue with the MT PBR only this Hoosier style . Is there some fine adjustment with shocks left ,yes . Enough to eliminate this , probably not . Will normally lift front wheels 6-8" , rear will separate / lift 3-4". Has caltracs . So it is hitting tyre hard , pics always show some tyre wrap . Tex |
