Tuscon D7 Race

Made it to Tuscon after 980 miles. Helping Ashton Hudson with his comp car this weekend. He switched from SS/CS to E/SMA this year. Should be fun. Never been to Tuscon. Nice track and gear scenery here. |
Re: Tuscon D7 Race
I need to figure out this picture deal. Will try to give reports on s and SS also. Left my Chevy II at home. Baytown first race for us. Ashton and I met Tom Dolan and Tibor Kidar (sp) at the bar at the hotel tonight. Had a good conversation with Tom. More tomorrow.

Re: Tuscon D7 Race
Thanks Ed for your reporting, went to the Tucson track couple of years ago while we were staying in Benson AZ for a few days in the Motorhome. They were having a Nostalgia type meet and some amazing cars were there and I was impressed by the track and pits. Really like Ashton’s Escort, such a great platform for a race car. Lloyd Davis and Danny Holt race a really nice C/EA Escort out of Knoxville, otherwise you just don’t see many of them at the track.
Perhaps Ken will let you text him pics to post up or may have to spring for the PhotoBucket account which permits hosting. Think iCloud sharing will only work for Apple iCloud users like myself but others can maybe lend advice. In any case, good luck in the tough Comp field. BTW the observatory at the Benson RV park has regular tours and if the weather cooperates the views are amazing. Seeing Saturn’s rings and getting an appreciation for the distances involved is “light years” ahead of my previous star gazing. Highly recommended. |

It has two views on a split screen and you can hear Alan Reinhart if you don't mind the buzzing static in the audio. |
Re: Tuscon D7 Race
Yup, I just clicked on the link that Phil posted and it came right up.

Re: Tuscon D7 Race
I made it here just in time for stock Q1, and true to their word my pre-entry got me a pit space on the pavement.

Too bad our fraternity/organization can not give us any input.
Even from a track like Tucson with a great manger like Jim Hughes. Ron |

Re: Tuscon D7 Race
Track prep is not good I believe there were 4 accidents here this weekend. If you manage to get off the line It is scary up stairs. I hope they improve it for tomorrow I had two close calls and I am not alone.

Re: Tuscon D7 Race
I have never had that problem at Tucson. Been in the 8's @ 160+ there many times.

Re: Tuscon D7 Race
Track quite cold and slippery today.
We am pitted right next to track....Two terrible accidents on top end and a dozen close calls! |

Re: Tuscon D7 Race
Any names on who crashed? I have a lot of friends attending this race.
|
Re: Tuscon D7 Race
The first one I personally seen was a Super Gas gentlemen named Eddie. Looked like a Roaster corvette. He slapped the wall really hard just before the 1/8 and either he knocked himself out or the throttle stuck and it got ugly after that.
I asked the "Racers for Christ" and he was just banged up pretty good but okay. I never seen just heard about the others. Mike Rice was continually checking the track personally himself. Sunday morning they were doing some work at the 1000' mark on the left lane. It wasn't windy or anything. The weather was very mild. Not sure why so many problems. Paul 7019 |
Re: Tuscon D7 Race
The only other crash I know of was Chris Newman first round of top sportsman. His car is absolutely trashed as he rolled it multiple times through the lights. Both Chris and Ed were reported to be ok. It is always a ****ty day anyone hits a wall at the track.
There are definitely some bumps down between 900’ and 1000’ in the left lane that have been there to some extent for 15-20 years. There were plenty of fast cars going right down the track without any issues at all this weekend just like there is on any given week at our normal bracket races. The weather was beautiful all weekend. The coldest it probably was while cars were on the track was 55 and I don’t think it ever got much over 80. (I wouldn’t know for sure because I’m too stupid to use a weather station.) For a track that can get windy like Vegas it never had much more than a nice breeze. I didn’t see either crash happen so I wouldn’t want to speculate on what happened but for everyone that was complaining about the track sucking, they probably need to go work on their cars. There are plenty of tracks worse than Tucson on the NHRA schedule and not many track owners have put as much work into the track and try to create a welcoming environment as Jim has over the last couple of years and last 6 months getting it so racers weren’t parked in the dirt. Thanks for all the pictures and reports while you were out there Ed. I was hoping to swing by and check out Ashton’s car before you guys hit the road. Matt Hawk |
