18 464Q G/SA Austin Williams, Burleson TX, '68 Camaro 11.110 12.00 -0.890

but that might be wrong because in the first race it says this

464Q F/SA Austin Williams, Burleson TX, '72 Duster 11.011 11.85 -0.839

Re: Horsepower on Tuesday

I was in the '69 Camaro, owned by Butch Marlow, who also owns the duster I normally race. In warming up for the second race, the duster lost oil pressure so I hopped in his camaro, which had yet to be teched in for the second race.

The combo is '69 Camaro, 350, 300 hp. Looks like it will be going from 286 to 295.

And for the keyboard jockeys out there, I was ahead at the 1/8 mile and we were dead even at the 1000 ft so there was no letting off in my lane. It was just too close.

Hey Austin can't say I blame you on that one brother. Would you mind sharing the weather info on that run?

My weather station reads barometer kinda funky so I believe it was around...

65 deg
20% humidity
29.65 Barometer

That should be close...not sure what that converts DA to.

Steel car will get 10 Hp. Plastic car will get 9 Hp.

The AHFS works best in the heads-up runs.

Has anyone noticed the spike in the price of lead today?

Re: Horsepower on Tuesday

It looks like the 69 models are the only combo affected! The 67-68&70 models all can use different intake manifolds! According to Pat the 83 305 Camaro didn't get hp when the 85 & 86 went 1.20 under at Englishtown last year because it didn't have the same manifold selection available in the guide!

Austin I applaud you and Jimmy for racing. That's what it's about. We're suppose to race to the finish line!!!!! Flame away!

So it only effects the 184 intake equipped engines with that combo ??????

Larry, I think you're seeing a secondary spike in the price. It trended
upward quite heavily from Wednesday right thru Sunday in Ennis.
Went as high as 20 lbs. for 140.00 that I saw. Must be Trumps Tariffs.

The guide shows the 184 intake only available for 69 models so unless Pat changed his way of doing things from last year it should only affect 69 models!

What about the 2 alternate manifolds in the note section ????

If your combo can't use the 184 intake you can't get HP! The 83 Camaro could use the alternate manifolds but the 85-86 Camaro couldn't use the 83 manifold therefore according to Pat they didn't get HP!

Was there any kind of teardown after these cars were eliminated? or was anything checked after the -1.20 and -1.22 pass. Carb, throttle body head numbers anything at all?
This deal of not checking cars after -1.20 runs is BS. This is just laziness on NHRA part.

I can not speak for Hidalgo, but none of that sort was checked on the camaro. I did go across the scales behind him as I was curious just how close I got it to the minimum and it was dead on the money.

So what is being said is 1969 Nova and. Camaro. Are different platforms?
News too me. Pat please clarify

dw3113 04-16-2018 12:27 PM

Re: Horsepower on Tuesday

James, it'll be interesting to see if they consider Camaro and Chevy II same platform. Back in 2016 when Gullett got the 327/275 stick hit, they didn't put hp on Camaro, but in 2015 when 350/300 stick got hit they put it on both platforms. Shows how consistent they are.

Charley Downing 04-16-2018 12:32 PM

Re: Horsepower on Tuesday

Just to be clear i'm not saying these cars would not have passed a teardown, But there needs to be checks and balances by NHRA.
Whats to stop someone from putting a bigger carb or throttle body on for a heads up run if no one is going to check for this kind of stuff.

Bob Gullett 04-16-2018 12:42 PM

Re: Horsepower on Tuesday

The Nova should not get the added HP. 2 years ago when I got tagged 4hp on my combo the Camaro's didn't. In the past they were grouped together so I asked Pat why in the past when the Camaro's were the cause of the added HP the Nova's got it as well or vice versa. He told me that in the past that should have never happened as the Camaro is a F body and the Nova is a X body hence different platforms. Hopefully that still holds true.

Agreed, been saying this for a while.....

Re: Horsepower on Tuesday

Charlie, you are right. We all have too much invested to let self policing
be the order of the day. And, like you, I am not suggesting anybody
wasn't right, but a check of head numbers, intake & throttle body
numbers would be in order. We have gone from full tear down to
nothing, there needs to be a middle ground. J.R.

Re: Horsepower on Tuesday

I emailed Pat Cvengros this morning regarding 70 nova
350/300 his reply Nova is a different platform than the
Camaro so the nova is safe

I thought a few years s ago nhra made several 69 Camaro owners put flat hoods on there car? I'm going to ask Glen Gray about tear downs when I see him this weekend.

Ed, That was on the 255 hp, 441 head model.
We're talking about the 350 /300.
Never a question on the hoods for them. The Indy Pace Car was a 350 / 300 base, with cowl hood.

Flat hood and cowl are rated the same, why would hp increase effect one and not the other ?.Rick

Is this the beginning of the end ? Stock will be bracket 2 and S/S will be bracket 1. I agree with you Charley. Is it laziness or just being cheap on NHRA's part by not having qualified tech people any more ?

The 350/300 never came with a "flat" hood. This combination was only available in the SS and the SS came with either the simulated "Stacks" on the hood or the cowl hood.

because they seem separated in the guide, that would be the only reason they are.

My point is if it made no difference prior to the hp increase ,why should hood choice make a difference now. Rick.
