Engineering At Its Best

My Matt Shurman story.......Matt and I purchased this Blazer that we intend to run in S/C at Reading. We are going to chop the top off to make it a roadster and then mount the engine in the back. Matt came up with the great idea of towing the trailer to the track with the new race car. No motorhome needed. We can live in the trailer all weekend. This will be the first Blazer Roadster to try to win Best Engineered. I think the tech guys will love this brilliant engineering feat that we designed and are building in Matt's backyard. It has been difficult work with Matt talking so much but his new muzzle has taken care of that problem. We will also be announcing a major sponsorship program with Skittles since Regis has moved on to Tootsie Rolls (the large size).

Re: Engineering At Its Best

This particular "marvel" of engineering will certainly be crafted by John and myself, as he previously stated. I am alittle concerned about spying on this project from some of the upper crust of chassis shops, so the location of the car will be keep closely guarded by John's doberman pincher.

AP wireservice and the NY Times should cover the debut of this ride at the Maple Grove event. In keeping with the high sugar product endorsement of candy,(and WHO doesn't just LOVE candy?) this car will be fueled by a sugar based alcohol fuel. Neither of us want to drive it, so John will dial it and be crew chief and I will take maintenance duties. John is speaking to a few different drivers capable of handling this complex and smooth ride, Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Shane Carr.

Along those lines, Kool-Aid is being thought of as an associate sponsor.

I'm can't talk with the muzzle on but I sure can type.

Asta.( For Real ) .....I still can't believe you are still taking shots on this whole engineering award thing still...you must be (ARE) one bitter person inside...

Matt..Congrats  on your win at Cecil last weekend.(GREAT JOB).... And how and why would you add fuel to this ongoing issue that apparently ASTA just can't seem to drop...

If I would have known all this SH---T was going to happen, I would have left my car in the Trailer so ASTA would have won HANDS DOWN.....So he boldly seems to think. Maybe someone else might have won and then they could have had to deal with the B.S....

Just like racing..Someone has to win and someone has to lose...Apparently losing doesn't wear very good on certain persons..And it shows......

In my opinion this post was not intended to fuel the previous "best engineered" feud that occured some weeks ago. This post was, IMHO solely intended to continue the ball busting that occurs at every race.

I happen to be the subject of the bustin.....and that's ok. My response was meant to add fun and laughter, not fuel the feud.

All of this was done in the spirit of good clean fun. Even those comments about Asta being a muslim and eating pork......oops

Derek, check your private messages.

It doesn't take a genuis to realize this post had EVERYTHING to do with the previous "best engineering" feud. Just keep beating that horse guys. Everyone likes different cars, and apparently that weekend the tech guys liked that cutlass roadster. I don't think it was meant as a put down against anyone elses car.

Everyone should just get over it.

Re: Engineering At Its Best

Ok, people, not to dismiss the prestige of a "Best" award but we found out my dad was 2nd place for Best Engineered at our Camaro's debut race at the 1998 Keystone Nationals---it didn't get down the track under power. I don't even think we were in the running for Best Appearing. That went to a car that was painted 3 years earlier. Maybe since the car will be 10 years old next year we'll win an award then.

Let's all put it in a bubble and let it go.

FOR REAL 07-19-2007 01:55 PM

Is that bubble going to be full of helium? If so, I want to inhale it.

Like Mr. VanSloot said, I think some people have lost their sense of humor. My post was directed at the pictures I attached just for a laughs and in continuing the fun from this past weekend. It was not for a certain person or to continue the Etown debate.

I could care less about that award and sleep very well without it. If I had won, it would not have made it onto my Wally shelf. It would have been packed away with Shell's old cheerleading trophies or given to dog as a new bone.

I have to go now. Time to pray to Allah.

Matt, there is definitely some room for improvement in this particular theory and design, this is whats obvious to me...

This should be the tow vehicle and there needs to be a door added to the back of the camper to house the blazer...then you will be a true cooter JOM...

Keep it going John!! I only made it through this winter laughing at you?.with you.

Tom won Best Appearing back in 1985 with his Backyard built Firebird, I questioned the bright gold chassis paint, but he swore that was the in thing then. He still has the photos of the body upright against the garage all winter. Every 22 years he gets the impulse to build a different one. He thought it would be cheaper to build his own ?HA HA HA HA?.? It can be far more expensive to build the Backyard Car vs. the Bickle Car. There is the ?Keep the wife occupied all winter? expense, and the ?I missed the deadline? expense, and god forbid your wife is a racer and she has to work in her garden instead of going to the races, expense!! He was going to debut at the Keystones, but feels the S/C Blazer will win hand down?maybe he?ll debut it at Indy.

I enjoy this board?Keeps me going...and I ESPECIALLY Love reading Asta?s posts!!

>>My new heap has the new brake set-up on the rear with 2 calipers on each wheel. I should defininitely be able to get all 4 wheels smoking.<<

Tom was under the car for a week, when he saw me laughing at this one. He should pay more attention to my MPH?s I?m not Fred Flintone?shesh.

Oh and by the way John?you know your going straight to H--- for your posts.

I think they picked the car that would P*** Asta the most....

If they had known he had that double throwdown 4 link setup he would have easily won best engineered....

his car is really nice but it sits a little crooked........I''ll fly out with my scales with Calvin and get you fixed up....

Or we could cut the top off then it will win for sure....

I know....a buddy of mines GTO is sitting here crashed and they cut the roof off to get him out...we put that body on it.....that will get you that plaque for sure.....

I couldn't shut up any longer.....

how about a Gremlin roadster????

John and Tom, I stopped by today while you were at lunch. The door was open so I dropped off the trans. and converter for your new hot rod. Now this is a special package. It has a transbrake for drag racing and with a flick of a switch it is ready to tow the trailer you have as well. This is not on the market yet, I felt your "Best engineered car" project was ideal for this trans and converter.

Re: Engineering At Its Best

2 days ago, someone helped themselves to the tonneau cover template I had for my cutlass..I just checked behind the garage and it's gone....

One of the neighbors said one shorter, creepy Allah looking dude eating a pork sandwich and one stunning, tall good looking guy were seen strapping it to the top of a Chevy Chevette with PA. plates with a "fireworks or bust" bumper sticker heading north towards Philly...

Well, the photo's below..(Which are very, very good) shows that it went to good use....

Testing shows it running S/Gas..If your debut is Maple grove, you better step it up to S/C..I see it in the 8.90 range @ 245-250 MPH...No problem

Good luck John and Matt..Who's doing the driving and does this car also have the double throwdown 4 link setup ???? If so. it works very well...

P.S. The paint job looks familier to me but I just can't put my finger on it:confused: Do all 4 doors open??????

calvin 07-20-2007 11:35 PM

Re: Engineering At Its Best

I heard that during testing there was alot of popping and banging sounds coming from the topless blazer as it was going down the track like it was on some sort of a stutter box. Officials took a look at the car and found out that the the 4-link bars were in different holes creating a spark that somehow landed in the backseat where there was a box full of unsold fireworks that ignited.

Matt Schurman 07-21-2007 07:41 AM

Re: Engineering At Its Best

This test session was an attempt to "see what we got" type of run.

On such short notice Sugar Ray L. was given the driving duties by John and me.

This proved costly. As a matter a fact, the whole "sugar" based idea of this car seems to be failing.

1. Sugar Ray shows up ready to drive, wearing a ONE piece firesuit. John and I both look at each other, it's bright yellow in color. Totally inconsisitant with our taste. Quite frankly, between me and you people, it's gay.
2. Sugar Ray won't wear anything but the "everlast" boxing gloves. These are not, SFI rated, but nobody wanted to argue with the man. He'll knock you out if you make him upset.
3. Sugar Ray wears blue converse hi tops. Need I say more? (yellow laces)

I cannot comment on the four link setup because it's gonna need a rework after that first run. Calvin/Kevin, have you ever tried to pull a chute lever on with 14oz boxing gloves on?
It must have been frigtening for him, fumbling with those big thumbs and no fingers.

Yes.....he put it into the sand. We've got so much more work to do. I'm wearing out my wrenchs on this car.

Never let a boxer drive your car.

ps....John made me weld the four doors closed for safety reasons.

calvin 07-21-2007 01:36 PM

Re: Engineering At Its Best

Matt, building a car is a lot of work, I would talk to John about having his car builder finish it. The last time I pulled the chute it was on accident. I went to pull on the power and pulled the chut instead. almost missed the round

Matt and John I was wondering if when you are finished with project car/truck/roadster (whatever it will be called ) if you might be interested in building 1 more .How about doing my 74 Vega panel wagon???? How many of them are still around , might draw some interest!! 74 Vega panel wagon roadster that can run in SC,SG,SST now thats different!!

Derek Clark 174 07-21-2007 08:00 PM

Re: Engineering At Its Best

John or Matt.
Since I'm not going to Maple Grove for the Nats, can I get National points for that since your using my # on the car...
I'd offer my services to drive but you got to get the Double Throwdown 4 link working properly so I don't lose any fillings when I let the Transbrake go @ 8200 RPM...

Sugar Ray L. has no fillings or real teeth to lose..

My shoe laces are black.....Does that help any?????

PS..Id like my tonneau cover template back just in case Tommy D tries to fit that on the Vega wagon !!!!! Well, come to think about it, it just might be around the same lenght...

Chris Depascale has all the $$$$ now (so Tommy says) so if you sell the template for big $$$ to him, count me in ...

I thought I was helping this story to the end. (ex boxer...crashes car....everybody laughs...story ends?)

Now I gotta rebuild it? No way, I'm too busy and I have a heap to work on.

So....no way I'm rebuilding this thread on a Vega panel wagon.

Who told you about the leave RPM @8200? That guy is giving away secrets!

Derek, I'm sure that your black shoe laces and shoes would drive perfectly. But I believe that you have a much better car than this sugar sweet, S10, chopped top, stick welded, chebby blazer that in this little story rests in a internet garage picture bent up like a pretzel.

I must give the props to NED Racer for the pic work. Amazing.

What is a tonneau cover template?

Re: Engineering At Its Best

Actually the real reason that those guys will win the best engineering award is that they had Glen Treadwell build them a motor using the powerplant that was originally in the blazer. Four valves have arrived in SG.

When you built this car/truck/roadster you should have left the 4 wheel drive setup in it so Sugar Ray could have drove through the sand trap. That would have saved on some of the damages. I gotta say those pictures were good. :D:D
