IHRA race at SGMP

I was thinking about possibly going to this race at the end of February, would be a good one to hit before going to Gainesville. I was looking at the flyer and noticed it is 1\8 mile race, why is this not a 1\4 mile race at this facility? Anyone got any ideas on this or heard of a reason why......

I have it on good authority that both Orlando and SGMP will be 1/4 mile. Believe dat! Jim

If 1/4 mile they need to change their flyers for the race....just saying.

Re: IHRA race at SGMP

Typically the Pro Am races are 1/8th mile. On rare occasion they will run 1/4th mile. Bradenton has run 1/4th Mile in the past but that has been a few years ago. I think its really up to the track to make the call if they have the ability to run 1/4th mile. The race at SGMP could be a good turn out for an IHRA event if some of the NHRA regulars attend. They run each race to completion in one day. Saturday will have 2 qualifying runs and go right into eliminations. With it being a one day race to completion time is of the essence. With a large turn out the race can run into the wee hours of the morning. 1/4 mile racing will take more time so that might be a factor in the decision.

Josh Peake posted on Facebook that all D2 races are 1/8 mile. There's the answer.....

I plan to Mike, we're in the logging business and the winter has not been kind to me. I've spent more time looking for suitable ground this year more than ever. If the things don't dry up some it may be a while before I go any where. I didn't make any IHRA races last year but hope to do some this year.

I hope to see you there. If you haven't been to Immolalee it's a fun race and the track is good. Very friendly track operator and personnel. I will be down sometime on Friday afternoon.

Yup, I was wrong! All D2 races WILL be 1/8 mile. Makes no sense but the powers that be have made the decision. Orlando and SGMP are two of the finest 1/4 mile facilities in the country and they (IHRA) want to run 1/8 mile at them! I know for a fact that Ozzy and Wade do not agree with this! Please let Josh Peake (D2 DD) know how you feel about this. (803) 465-5575. jpeake@ihra.com

Re: IHRA race at SGMP

I think all the legitimacy they gained by putting an IHRA flag on these tracks they just lost by running these races 1/8 mile, just my opinion. They could've gained some customers by running this race 1/4 mile, especially so close in front of Gainesville. I got to admit it puts a sour taste in my mouth, as bad as I want to pull for them they continue to give me reasons not to.....

Cooter,
You been hanging with that Koolaide drinking NHRA crowd too long. For every racer they gain 1/4 mile they will loose some 1/8 the mile RACERS. Won't change car count any at all. In fact a few years ago IHRA paid $5,000 to win, ran 1/4 mile, and let NHRA RACERS compete without IHRA license or chassis certs. They still didn't come. LOL

Re: IHRA race at SGMP

Chip you could be right about looking some short track racers I never really thought about that but why? They run the TOC 1/4 mile so I would think everyone should have a car set up for 1/4 mile. I probably did drink too much Koolaid but it had real sugar not any of that artificial sweetener stuff!
I have always been an IHRA fan and enjoy the staff and tech personnel but I wonder if some of the people calling the shots over there really have their sh€& together.
I still have to believe running1/8 mile races at these venues will hurt their chances of attracting new customers.....

Cooter, maybe you and I both need to try hillbilly Halftracking more, so we could become RACERS, instead of just racers. I won't run half track stuff either. I like diet Dr Pepper much better than Kool Aid myself. :-)

Re: IHRA race at SGMP

In the seventies a lot of the smaller tracks went to 1/8 racing due to increased speeds and insufficient shut down area. IHRA got their start at a lot of these same tracks and have leaned towards the 1/8 mile every since. It does seem a shame to run an 1/8 mile race at a facility like SGMSP.

Re: IHRA race at SGMP

Mr Ed, I believe you have come up with the standard for what 1/8 mile racing will be known as for ever after! "Hillbilly halftracking" has a ring to it, I run it if I race around here because as Mr Jimmy pointed out that's all that's left in my part of the world. Most all these tracks are not capable of handling the speeds we run today, but as Mr Jimmy also pointed out just seems a shame to run these tracks 1/8 that are more than adequate to handle 1/4. And most everyone knows me knows I drink all types of beverages, I just don't like them "watered" down.

That term Hillbilly Half-tracking is great. Where I come from, we sure do have our share of native Hillbilly's. We always wanted to name an association the HHRA.
(Hillbilly Hot Rod Association)
-if your car didn't quite meet IHRA or NHRA rules, you could probably pass tech in the HHRA and still race!

I'm from Oklahoma. We have our hillbillies. It's just a joke I make. Please don't be offended. My brother-in-law is from the west coast. He thinks we are all hillbillies here.
