Need some Grade Point advise
I would like to get a grade point at this weekends race at Indy. Problem is Merc is driving our car so what other options do I have?
The way I understand it is I only have to pay my entry fee, and go through tech with something that will pass all without ever having to make a run. Is this true? Or....can a car go through tech twice with different competition numbers on it? Or....can I take a rental car through tech that is slow enough to pass as is without needing a roll bar, etc.? Or....does someone have a stocker in the area that I could take through tech that isn't planning to race? Of coarse I will pay your expenses to bring it to the track and I will not make a run. Just show up and hang with me through tech then virtually leave if you want, or enjoy the races all weekend on me. Or...?? Thanks! |
Re: Need some Grade Point advise
Mike,
I would contact your division tech director. That way YOU know exactly where they stand, and they will be expecting you. Our guys in D-5 are great, I am sure yours are as well, and willing to help. Good luck, Sean |
Re: Need some Grade Point advise
The car you tech has to be in the class guide.

Re: Need some Grade Point advise
Any low class street car or rental car that is classified will do. My stocker got grade points for somebody a couple of times and never left the trailer.

Re: Need some Grade Point advise
use your number have the car teched in -----then have Paul remove your number & put his number on it have it teched in--- you do not need to make a pass just tech it in!!!! kill 2 birds with one stone--FED 387

Re: Need some Grade Point advise
Mr Keener there is a provision in the rule for entry into national events for car owners. I read the rule and dont quite understand it but if you are listed as the car owner on your entry you can use this as owner points to use for entry into a national event. I would speak to someone for clarification but this came up a couple weeks ago when Victor Cagnazzi used this provision to enter at Maple Grove.

Re: Need some Grade Point advise
Mike
Based on the recent events at the Reading national event you get grade points for being an owner,at least it was that way for Victor Cagnazzi. Call Rich at the division HQ and check into that aspect of things. Better explained in post #6. See you at Indy |
Re: Need some Grade Point advise
For as long as you two have been racing with the NHRA you shouldn’t need any grade points. I think any owner/Driver with over say 100 NHRA entries should be grandfathered in.
I don’t know you but I know I have seen your names on cars since I have paid any attention to Drag racing. So I am sure you would qualify. |
Re: Need some Grade Point advise
as a member of NHRA for 50 yrs I never got even a Christmas Card ..

Mike, are you wanting a grade point for the Gators? One point will probably do it and finding a cheap Dodge Caravan that's in the guide is probably the cheapest and cleanest way. Really sorry to see your Motorhome fire loss...hope insurance covers the whole deal. |
Re: Need some Grade Point advise
Could you put the car in stock and superstock at the same event with 2 drivers??

Re: Need some Grade Point advise
You cannot double enter a car.

Re: Need some Grade Point advise
I entered my 95 Camaro daily driver. Just needed class designation and number on the windows. Was told not to make a pass as it would not pass fuel check. This was in Div. 3.
Btw Mike, was good chatting with you and Paul at the Dutch. Sorry of your misfortune. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. |
Re: Need some Grade Point advise
Driveshaft loop mandatory on all RWD Stockers ...Shouldn't pass tech without one.

Re: Need some Grade Point advise
NHRA should just take the entry fee and pocket it, give out a grade point, allow entry grade point for the Natl Event of choice, and receive a miniature Wally for participation. I always heard it comes down to money, maybe a double entry fee to cover for any additional expenses that might crop up.

Re: Need some Grade Point advise
I am not racing at the fall classic thus weekend, I have a funeral to attend Saturday. I live 100 miles straight west of Indy. Your welcome to my stocker, but I can't bring it to the track.

Re: Need some Grade Point advise
Monte, that is a mighty nice gesture on your part. Just goes to show you, there are some really good people out there.

Re: Need some Grade Point advise
Thanks to all who responded to this thread and especially Monte Howard for offering the use of his car!
For now the owner grade point rule best fits our situation for the early part of the 2015 season so I had a conversation yesterday with Rich Bowers at the Division 3 office, and he explained the rule to me. This is how I understand it works according to my conversation with Rich: As you would expect all grade points earned remain the property of the driver. However if the driver is NOT the car owner and the driver of the car is not going to enter the event in the same eliminator category the division office will allow the owner to drive the car using the grade points earned by the cars normal driver. It is very important to fill out the tech card correctly listing the owner of the car. This rule is made to protect the car owner from not being able to enter and drive his own car, but the driver must give his permission for the owner to use those grade points. Using our car as an example if Paul has two grade points at the end of the season and I, as the owner of the car, wish to drive at Gainsville (with zero driver grade points) permission would be granted through the division 3 office for me to use Paul's driver grade points in order for me to gain entry to that race- as long as Paul is not entered in Stock Eliminator in any other car. Hope to see more old friends at Indy this weekend and thanks for all of the emails and phone calls that Paul I have received about the tragic motor-home fire we experienced on the way home from the Dutch. We went back to PA Tuesday and retrieved our damaged trailer and got it safely back home. All is well with the car and the contents but we will be using our old truck and trailer to get to Indy. Just glad we had a spare rig! Safe travels! |
Re: Need some Grade Point advise
What Rich explained to you directly contradicts what they did for Cagnazzi at Maple Grove but in any case sounds like the correct application of the rule and glad you have a way forward without incurring more expense.

When we first started, at a regional in Atlanta, I teched and drove the Mega Maniac, and Chris drove my Pacifica, listening to my Neil Diamond CDs for the whole 22 seconds for his points run.
