Safest Way To Do A Out Of State Transaction

Off topic but

I am looking to purchase a stocker thats half way across the country. At no point will I be meeting the seller face to face.
What will be the safest way to protect both our interests for this type of transaction ?

^^^^^^^^^ x infinity. so many things can go wrong without a face to face. Although if you have someone that can actually go view the vehicle for you, is another option.

Fly out, go to track and have them prove the performance. Pay, load up at end of run and take to your transporter.

Without seeing it run, what's to say it's not hurt, or all the good parts have not been swapped? It may have been a record holder yesterday, but I think we have heard a few questionable transactions that a solid car could no longer perform as advertised. You won't know without someone or yourself seeing it. Also hearing it start and idle and not going down a track means absolutely nothing. If someone wants to sale it they would also have no problems with these suggestions. Unless it's a roller.

For the sale or deposit. A written and signed contract by both parties. A statement with wording "Deposit refundable in full if vehicle does not meet purchasers expectations upon inspection prior to purchasing". Some language to show this is not a buying it sight unseen, as you most likely will have to put a deposit down to show buyer you are not just a tire kicker. This is similar to what I did when buying my trailer several states away.

Good luck it's too bad we can not trust anyone anymore.

Sean

If I couldn't personally take a trailer to go check it out in person I would seek out another trustworthy ClassRacer (we generally know who they are) near the vehicle and ask them (for agreed upon fee) to go assess the vehicle and advise. This is a great community of racers and frequently go out of their way to help.

It is Bill Mcartys record holding DF/S Oldsmobile. The trans is currently broke and is reflected in the price. So going to a track is not an option for the current price and I'm on a shoe string budget. Guess there is no full proof way of a safe transaction without spending money to get up there

Bought my Chevy II in '03,, off the internet, and I was very nervous about doing it.
Long story, short, we took a 4 door pickup, a 24 ft. enclosed trailer, 4 drivers, and cash (with plastic backup), and left Tacoma, Wa, on a Saturday morning and drove straight through in 39 hours to Whiteland, Indiana. Car was all it was represented to be and then some, so the deal was made, car was loaded up and we headed back home on Monday, got back here Wednesday. It was a quick, but fun road trip. 2 of the drivers had just graduated from HS, so they loved the adventure aspect of it all. Me,,, I bought all the fuel and food, but still have the car and am still racing it. Good luck which ever way you go.

I had a similar adventure when I bought my Super Stocker from a Great racer Bob Michaels in 1980 I think LOL at me Two of my friends Fred Rector and Kelly lane went with me from Farmington , New Mexico in my ramp truck we left Farmington and never turned off the truck until we got to Kentucky where we met Bob . I got in the race car and made a run two thou under the national record , weighted the car went right to my truck loaded it and gave Bob the balance of the money . he was amazed I had him take his personal stuff out of the race car then then came straight home very little sleep but ever since then I have ran a Pontiac . I will never forgive Bob Michaels for making me run a Pontiac LOL at me thanks to Bob I still run a Pontiac
:D:);)

Me and a buddy bought a Camaro made a banzai run from Deer Park Tx team drove to Brunswick Ga did the deal at 3 am in the morning, loaded the car up and we brought it home (as a roller). Even though he had sent me plenty of pictures and video's what he did not tell me was the car was hit hard in the right quarter. Lesson learned. But we did have fun, we left Deer Park Tx at 10 am sat. morning arrived in Brunswick Ga at 3 a.m. Sunday morning e.s.t., did the deal we left Brunswick at 4 a.m. est and arrived back in Deer Park Tx Sunday evening at 6 p.m. c.s.t. we had a great time but stiffed on the car.

Either drive, fly out and look at the car or there are some great folks on here like someone said earlier pay them an agreed price to look at the car for you. I have bought a car like that also and it worked out great.

You ought to be quite cautious carrying around a boatload of cash to pay for these transactions.

There are more than a few examples of honest people getting into big trouble with aggressive LEOs, at all levels, abusing asset forfeiture statutes.

It starts with nothing more than a trumped up “unsafe lane change” stop, all due to your out of state plate. The next thing you know, you’re standing on the side of the road sans your cash. And you did absolutely nothing wrong.

This is not your father’s America.

My advice is go see the car in person first.
I made the mistake of trusting a well known racer in Lancaster Ca last December and bought his 1963 Nova sight unseen. It was the worst car I have ever bought. Not stock legal in anyway and horribly built. The car was pieced together enough to move itself onto a transport truck and that was the good news, It turns out he wasn't the legal owner of the car also.

Go see it yourself before you do anything. Then if you want it, buy it and take it home at the same time you exchange money. I bought a car from a member of THIS site. Based on Photos and info the seller gave me. I sent a deposit and was set to pick it up several weeks later. Several months of hastle later I found out it was a big scam. And had to travel there to sue him. I won my lawsuit. But I am still trying to recover my money. I am NOT saying your seller is dishonest (I dont even know who it is). But learn from my mistake so you dont end up in the same mess I got.

I can give you two examples... Both ended up positive for me... First trip was only 8 hours away... Saw pictures of the car, talked to the guy... Took my trailer to buy... Got there and the car was a POS... Only lost 16 hours of time and the diesel... Small loss and much better than owning a POS car.....

Second trip... Seventeen hours away.... Saw pictures, talked to the guy.. Took my trailer to buy... Car was perfect.... Just as advertised... Bought the car loaded it up and took it home... Still have the Barracuda today...

You have to go see it or at least send someone you trust... You won't make the BIG dollar mistake....

As everyone said, there is no substitute for personally inspecting the car. That protects both you and the seller from mistaken assessments. I suggest you fly there, and if you can't take the car right away, rent a truck/trailer and move it to a storage unit you also rent/control until you can come back and retrieve it. That way it is always in your control after you pay for it, and there is no opportunity for unforeseen problems.

Take a trailer and a bank draft. Look at the car and paperwork, if you like it buy it, if not leave it there and take the bank draft back to the bank. I went to Boston once and the car was not what they said so I came home with an empty trailer.
