We have narrowed the search to, the A/S record(s) for 1969 and 1970. Thank you…MB.

Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
I believe Kenny Horne set the A/S record in 70 or 71 in a 67 GTO. Kenny still lives in Fayetteville, NC I think. He may know some of the history.

Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
Here is some info: The 1970 A/S record was an 11.45 minimum through August 21. The B/S record at that time was an 11.56 held by one of the Tony Pizzi cars.

rules and pushed all the older stockers into Super Stock...and Stock cars had to be '65 and newer...(later changed to '60 and newer.)...and the "build" for Stockers had to be MORE stock than the previous years..... Don't have a lot of stuff from that time frame BUT look for a guy named Mark Mazotta...he ran a '66 Corvette out of the Lebrun camp in CT. I know he got the A/S mph record in 71 at the E-town points meet...I was there for that...(and the rain date).. and have a program from that event somewhere...listing his accomplishment....He may have run the car during the 70 season but I don't know.... There was a Janetti-Wood team from the Philly area with a '69 Camaro about that time...they were the "hitters" in B/S...not sure if they ran "A"...Tony Pizzi power I believe.... |
Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
I have some information on a 1968 Camaro called "The Fugitive" based out of the Pacific Northwest. Does anyone recall this car from that period in time? Any Photos? Thank you…Maurice.

SS Wannabe
Think Kenny was 70 or 71. I started working Div. II tech in 70 and the first time I met Kenny was to certify the car for the record. I moved to Fayetteville in Jan of 73 and already knew Kenny. Again, working with an old mind. Think old cars were in stock thru 71. 72-73 was a cutoff at 63, 74-75 was cutoff at 65 and 76 went back to 60. Maurice, I will try to get in touch with Kenny and see what he remembers. |

Maurice, You might try TOM KASCH on this forum. He was doing research in old National Dragsters from that time frame for a book he was helping with. He may have access to what you want. |

A was I think 9 lbs .... Apples and oranges, but thanks. (Never saw Truman in higher than B/Stock .Remember, you couldn't move up or down then. You had to run at the actual shipping weight) |
Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
Mark
You are correct. A was 9.0 in 72. I think his car was a "pure " stock car. I know he had his M/S Chevy in 74 when he was r/u at the Summers. Must have been 72 on the Goat. |
Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
The last A/S record prior to 1972 was set by Mazzotta & LeBrun 66 corvette on 5/71 : 11.17 123.79 (Dec 31, 71 Dragster)

I ran A/S in 1970 with my 1967 Camaro 396 375hp car. I can tell you this much, we won A/S at the Winternationals that year running only 12.40's at Pomona but got to the 3rd round in eliminations when a pushrod broke running against Kieth Berg's 18 second Olds with two full 5 bulb trees as a handicap... lol Still have the trophy, I think Linda Vaughn gave me, or maybe that part was in my dreams..... That was nowhere near the record, though. Even at Mission, the best I recall from that car was 11.98, still not super competitive when we had to handicap off the records. Interestingly, in 1971 to be more competitive, we switched the engine into a 1967 Camaro convertible which fitted at the top of C/S and that car ran 11.92. Someone must have a copy of National Dragster from that race, I'd sure like to get that issue for my collection, never thought to save all that stuff back in the day... |
Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
Good story, Grant.....those were the "good old days" that I will remember forever.

Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
Tony Pizzi had a 427-425hp '69 Camaro in A/S in the 1970-71 time period. Very fast. SS&DI had an article on the car and he claimed some 10 sec times. Not sure he ever held the record though.

Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
Dwight...the car you're mentioning was probably the Janetti-Wood car which ran out of
Tony's shop. Tony I believe, ran a white? '68 Z-28...about that time...in Stock....I think I saw it once....he had lettered on it "World's quickest Z-28" ...and it probably was.... Dwight/Mark...do you recall that for the 1971 season...NHRA changed the weight breaks in Stock Elim....I don't remember why...so that each car would run a class lower than the previous year...A/S would be B/S...B/S would be C/S...etc..(for 1971.) Want to mention Dave Lebrun here for a second...He was a fixture in A/SA for many years...as most will remember...but he did "row" a 4-speed for a few years prior... I saw an old photo of the familiar blue Camaro...and it had A/S on it...(probably from the '70 season.) He might have had the record for a bit that year. I saw the car run in '71 several times as a B/S...due to that NHRA mandate.... Mark....was that Mazzotta car a tri-power? MAURICE....sorry to go on an "East Coast" rant here....Would you mind sharing with us what you DO know about the "Fugitive" car? I'm interested....have you got any info recently? I've got a friend who's checking a "rag-tag" collection of Drag News' from about that time period...to see if the car is mentioned...Don't have any ND's....anybody???? |
Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
Maurice...I agree that Jim Waldo might remember the car...also maybe some other
veteran Stock racer from that area...perhaps Cal Method...could help. Also...Danny Durham...who's on this site at times... he might have seen the car back in the day....You out there Dan? |

Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
SS…What I know is the car was a 1968 Dark Blue SS Camaro called "The Fugitive" 396-375 (possibly with aluminum heads) and 4 speed . It was based on the West Coast (B.C.) of Canada. Trying to find a trail of it's race heritage. I know it was raced in Division 6 and at the Winter Nationals as an"A" car 1969 and possibly went to "B" in 1970. I don't know how far East it was raced. Not 100% sure but Dwayne Deveral and Winton Cross (not sure of spelling on both) campaigned the car. I know this is all a long shot, but some of you guys can remember ET's and MPH and who ya'll raced decades ago. Thank you to all of you who are helping me piece this puzzle together. Maurice.

I have a sheet from 1970
A/S was 11.45 Katic-Keenan-Smith '66 Corvette Atco I do recall the Mark Mazotta driven car and it was fast. Dave Lebrun also ran A/S with a Corvette and not sure if that was the same car. 11.40 was what I recall it ran at Island against us at one race. My partner fouled and both cars were .05 under the records on that run. That was in 1970 I believe |
Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
Maurice...
My buddy's still checking his Drag News collection but so far nothing. I did happen to notice that Cal Method was the Stock r/u at the '69 Winternationals... BTW....is this "Fugitive" car still around in one form or another? Have you found any- more info? |
Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
Yes it is still around, fully restored to original (396-375 aluminum head, Blue) rumoured to be in a museum. A friend in the movie industry made contact with one of the original owners on the "Godzilla" movie site. Also have found some race track pit photos and it did run "A/S" in 1969. I am still hunting for information. Hopefully I will run into Cal Method at Mission this weekend. Thank you…Maurice.

Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
Maurice you should check with Walt Cook as he might remember more details on the car. If I remember correctly Maurice Wiebe owned that car in the mid to late 80s and sold it about the time the Ashcroft race track opened. I can not remember who bought it but I worked on it at Ashcroft a couple of times. He then bought another Camaro to race from Rolf N.

Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
I want to "Thank" everyone who has helped me on my quest for information. A lead came to me this morning in a PM, that I followed up on and have made contact with the current owner of "The Fugitive". The car is his favourite of his collection. He is also very interested in the racing history of his Camaro. I let him know about Classracer and he will also review what has been posted. So keep the leads and information coming. Thank you again…Maurice.

Re: A/S 1967-1972 record history...
SS. The car had been restored at that time. It was / is a 396-375hp with factory alum.heads.
