Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
This sort of an announcement:
We are just about ready to sign an agreement with Wild Horse Pass Raceway for one of our events on Saturday, November 22nd, 2014. That date is one week after the Finals @ Pomona and one week before Thanksgiving weekend. Some of you may have raced with us in the past. We've always run a S/SS combo at our events. It was always the part that got the most favorable comments afterwards. As always, we'll sell you a tech card, and then collect a "lane fee" , as yet to be determined, that will be paid back 100% to the racers. There will be a track run T&T night on Fri, the 21st. I have gotten the okay to put together a S/SS gambler race for the early arrivals, and I will do that if there's enough interest. What I need now is a count of those who most likely WILL attend. If you don't ever post here, you can email me, and I'll run a number tally in this thread. Also ,we can use sponsors for the special awards...Best package 3rd TT, Long Distance Award, No. 1 Qualifier, etc. Contact me on that as well. Thank you Mark |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo

Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
I expect to be there, but unfortunately not for Stock/Super Stock. Hopefully next year!
I would hope there will be a few coming who don't reply here, at least if you can publicize it enough. Don't lose hope for more than seven. |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
I'll be there with my Aspen. I should have a new engine by then. I have spoken to Jack Foshee, and Mike Graham and they plan to attend. Mike will have his wife's Mustang done so she will probably attend as well.

Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
I would like to thank Jimmy DeFrank at California Car Cover Co. for getting involved as one of our sponsors. Now if we can just get him to bring that high flyin' Camaro over to race with us.
Also haven't heard from several S/SS racers in the area. Some of you guys know how to contact them. Let's get them on board. |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
I talked to a couple of FE Ford stick shift racers last night at Wild Horse.
They plan on coming out on the 22nd. How about the SoCal and Vegas racers? This deal ought to be worth the trip for somebody.. |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
More great news today.
My long time friends, Eddie and Jack Chin from Rhode Island, have stepped up in a big way to support our Nov. event. Eddie always has a Super Stocker or Stocker or two For Sale , so give him a call . or just call or PM him to say thank you for supporting independent S/SS racing. Chin Racing 401-662-3875 |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
My Super Stocker most likey will be there if I can remember how to drive . I may even take the weight out and let it hang out lol. I hope the track will have the full quarter mile prepped .:);)

Both lanes looked very good with NO bald spots after a night of racing. The Sun had been up for a bit, and I was standing in the left lane, making some notes. When I tried to leave, my sandals were stuck to the starting line and couldn't move for a few seconds. Of course I didn't have a 428 Pontiac hooked to them, but I'm just relating my experience . I understand that the track had changing the formula for thinning and spraying, so it seems to be working. Thanks for offering to grace us with your presence. Looks like about 20 cars in S/SS so far, which is about half of the count in the state. I still haven't heard from quite a few yet though. |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
I just got confirmation of Calvert Racing signing on as a sponsor.
Make sure you thank these people when you see them this Fall. It means a lot to them, I can assure you. Also I talked to a "Snowbird" today that will be joining us in S/SS. Ryan Smith will join us also with his N/SA Malibu. Might be our biggest S/SS combo yet.... but I'm going to need other old car fans as racers and spectators to make this work.. So bring your friends and neighbors along too. |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Mark,
I will be there with the firebird in O or P. Lets have some fun |

Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Update on S/SS Combo.
Over the weekend , I had a fan of S/SS racing post $100 for the Best Package Shootout. There's the setup then: Track opens at 5:00 PM Friday the 21st of Nov. This is a track T&T event. You will be paying WHMP track fees for Friday night You are welcome to stay in the pits overnight , but we will collect our Saturday fees on Friday night if you are staying. You only have to tech in once, but you'll have to submit both tech cards at that time. If there is enough interest, I will conduct a gambler race for you guys on Friday night. I have the track's permission to do that. Saturday, the 22nd.gates open 7 am. You purchase your tech card and crew passes at gate 2...The middle gate by the VIP building. See me or Mike Mingo to sign in with your lane fee. (100% pay back of this fee) All classes will get three TT's if all goes well, in rotation. Please tech in with your NHRA index at the top of the tech card, as soon as possible ,so we can get the tech cards to the computer operator for first round qualifying. Sportsman ladder by qualifying order. I will be checking weight and doing a little look over at the scales, 1st and 2nd Q runs. However ..NO HEADS-UP RUNS IN ELIMINATIONS ..I just don't have the tech personnel for that. Qualifying is for bragging rights and for the ladder only. If someone wants to sponsor or post an award for no.1 , please do. . First two hits are Q runs. 3rd run is the Best package shoot out . Dial it in ... Must be on the green side and over index to win it. Tree will come down staggered. As stated, $100 dollars posted for this, so far. I might add to it if we have a good turnout, so bring all your friends and neighbors, so we can do this again in March. Any questions? Call me Good luck in Vegas ,guys. |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Mark,
I want in.......can you all make me an "honorary" stocker member for a day. I have a 98 camaro with a whomping v6.....fuel injected.....very base model. What would be the natural class for this comb? I want to get into U/SA......I've been hearing about some wicked Maverick running around the neighborhood here in Tempe. I could dump the antifreeze out of it for the day, I better as there would be a good chance it will. Or heck I owe Don one....we can save that till the final. I can drive over to Wildhorse Pass.......but may need a tow getting home. |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
....good chance it will break......
|
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Brad, Thanks for bumping up the thread...I don't know what else to say....

Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Good luck to those going to Pomona.
We are looking good here for the 22nd. It's supposed to be low to mid 70's hear next week . I haven't got a report from Vegas yet about our local racers.. Specifically, here's some I have not heard from; Chris Ashley Eric Bell Ray Menard Setters family (part time..snowbirds) Hawk Bros. Jack Foshee Angelo Philips Harry Doolittle Bill Nelson and ?? SoCal ? Vegas? El Paso? Albuquerque? Anyone talk to these people about our event? Thanks Oh..We will be parking cars NHRA event style ..Straight rows disregarding road course through pits. Of course S/SS can all pit together on the upper level past the Comp pits or at the quarter mile scoreboards but those spots go fast. Questions? Call me |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Just heard from a racer from Teuton's Dark Side, and from the North Country.
He'll be down Friday night. The early snow up there must have convinced him. Won't happen here....Sunny and 70 degrees rest of the week. Who else? |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Will there be fuel available at the track? Any racing going on Sunday?
|

Friday night and Saturday only.. ...and I'm working on the fuel deal..Will report. |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Wild Horse Pass Raceway has a Sunoco fuel vendor with all flavors on hand.
But...here's your chance to burn up all that gas from this season. Remember..No heads up runs in eliminator..Weight check only for qualifying. No fuel check...(I still remember what ERC smells like though ;-) ) |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo

Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Anyone who didn't attend missed a great time! Excellent job by Mark and the Wildhorse staff. The track was great.
Excellent coverage on Arizonaautoscene.com |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Looks like I missed a good time, but I needed to be at work more than I needed to spend $130 on a roll of the dice. On my budget, if the race offers nothing to benefit the national/divisional scene, I will likely not go until I come into more money, or am nearly debt free. However Mike, I might go to the Nitro Jam race in Tucson, but only if I am not able to enter Pomona's 75 car field with my 2 grade points, hence the main reason I was in 'Vegas. Sorry Mark, but your race was too close to the divisional for me to attend.
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving today as well as good memories of that race. :) |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Disclaimer
Gary, you are my friend, so no disrespect intended. I have no bones to pick with NHRA or IHRA But,,, Your logic is flawed on many levels. I don't do ROI on racing because It would terrify me. If I were: Here is what I see.. 2divisionals at $500 min.. 1 National at $600 min =$1600 to race Winters.(maybe) Combo race $130 plus $100 (days pay) $230. I think Paula won about 1k and Andy about $600. Plus whatever semis were. This was 4 rounds with 1 single each. Car quality We had many former National and divisional finalists,at least 1 former world champ, numerous current and former national record holders. Spectators I spent the day talking to spectators about the slowest car in the field. There were many that were interested in a entry level stocker. They crowded the fences when we ran. We were the show... not filler. Track prep Track prep was on as good as or better than National event prep. Misc The wildhorse crew were excellent and came by after the race to thank us for coming. Front page coverage on Arizonaautoscene, com. Mark made sure the show ran smoothly. (very few glitches) One day,one first round and complete before sundown. For my entertainment dollar I would give this 2 thumbs up. We need more. |
Re: Southwest Nostalgia Drags..Stock /Super Combo
Quote:
1. My work did need me and it was a sure thing to make money being there, and more (quite a bit) than $100 bucks thanks to overtime pay. 2. Paying $130 bucks for a race that I (no matter how good me and my car ran), could've lost in rnd 1, and I bet there was no pay for the first round runner-ups was there?), wasn't a chance I could afford to take (especially since the race was on a Saturday (right), when I was at work). Hence my roll of the dice comment. 3. The race was only 2wks after the divisional, and that race had national/divisional significance to me. I mainly went to 'Vegas to; a. get another grade point with Pomona in mind, and b. to get some valuable seat time while hanging out with racing buds like Ryan Warter, Marion Stephenson, Cal & Jon Percy, and Dwayne Scheitlin (who I don't get to race with often), and especially Bill O'Connor (whose racing budget is more like mine, than most anyone else who was there), right? I mean after all, how we get to the races, our trailers used, and our on track accommodations while there are as far apart from equal, as is the performance of our cars. Trust me in that I wish I could have been there, because I like having people talk to me about my Cavalier, and I probably would have had a great time, but unlike most of my fellow racers, I also don't have my racing operation where I live ( the joy of apt. living), nor is it relatively close to me (60 miles), because I can't afford storage space fees (my car also would have no security from other lot space users). I thus have to make sure I can even get to it, since I keep it with a customer of my work. Now if the race fee was $80 total (like Div 5 national opens are), given how closely it was to the divisional, then I more likely would' ve been there. It was too much too soon for my budget....sorry |
