77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
:rolleyes:interesting this combo gets 10 horse back in stock. interested to see how many get built... any in the works?

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
I just wanna see one! I can imagine one, like a crap-brown or equally hideous 70's colored 2dr wheels high lol...but I already have a car. The wrecking yards here are crawling with them, and I have used a couple in other motorsports...if you need it to keep its rear sheet metal attached to the trunk floor or make the front bumper impact shocks indestructible I might be able to help...

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
It would make a great car for a demolition derby!
|
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
They do indeed. Just need a little work on the bumper shocks up front and a well placed notch in the rear framerails to get it going upward. With a little work they will put up a fight!

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
I've had 2 of those 74-78 LTDs and those cars are absolutely huge.
I cannot imagine trying to drag race one. Wow ! |

Vic,
$125.00 for the motor. Right now it's still in the car. I'll have to make an oak pallet for it to. Here is the # off the passenger side head. Billy talk you out of the 351M ? Attachment 22519 Almack, yeah they are heavy. I liked racing mine. Dual exhaust, 750 Holley 2.75 gears mid 15's & everybodies grandfather had one. Attachment 22518 |
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
how must is shipping and do you have the carb???
|
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Vic,
I dont have the right carb per the spec sheet, sorry. It looks like a holley 1850 will work though. Shipping, I only know it's going somewhere in div. 1 but I can take it to the shop I work @ & have it freighted out from there. |

That's good timing, I just got a quote for truck freight assuming weight & somewhere in West Virginia, its over 1800.00.

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
I might ask why are you guys building these?
|
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
It should be obvious! They have excellent cup holders for the long drive down the track and a front seat big enough to take a nap on.
|
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
and they'll sleep six!

Wont there always be a more bogus combo in the weeds? Cadillac, BLown Studebaker, Vega OH cam? |
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Why?
Because people get tired of jelly-bean, belly-button, cookie-cutter, pick your cliché, type of car. THAT, is why. Mike Carr |
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Why??
Because it is far more interesting, challenging and satisfying to put a real, production, showroom available, no horsepower car under the index than racing a new Copo or Cobra will ever be. It's called "hot rodding". Have a very Merry Christmas |
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Why???
Its good to see any combo that is not just another SBC. |

And trust me the 2013 season for me was no picnic .And I do consider myself a true "hot rodder" . And a very Merry Christmas from those of us on the 'other coast'. |
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
If 320 horsepower is wrong, what would be right?
|
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
When I saw Billy Nees spotted out a country mile at Cecil by a new COPO, it was cool to watch the hunt, and Billy prevailed, it was rather awesome.
I welcome the Land Yachts of yesteryear to help provide a tear to the new cars, lol..... I actually love all stocker/super stocker cars. (and trucks) But it's like the old wide world of sports opener, the agony of defeat. Sometimes Davy beats Goliath, sometimes he don't. Build what makes you happy. I will be there to watch in division 1 |
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
The 74 & 75 are both @ 300hp. & with the grand canyon in the top of those pistons I don't think its factored wrong.I had a choice of 2 cars, my current Cougar or the LTD for an "N" car. I haven't seen a mad rush to build these cars, Vic is probably the only one actually putting one together. Mine is sitting in the yard rotting right now. I cant bear to have these 70's cars hauled off & crushed & get made back into Toyotas. When Vic said he was looking for a 460 I thought this was a good way to @ least resurrect part of an old friend back to racing.

Maybe a 4bbl SBC Stocker engine with the hp rating beat to death, that a guy would have to spend 30 Grand on to be a second under? |

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
I have a '83 T-Bird bracket car with a '75 LTD 460 engine in it. All it has is an aluminum Performer intake and a cheapo Summit flat tappet cam. Still has the orginal 1975 piston rings.
Those engines are real low on compression ratio. Tough engines for sure, but those exhaust ports are weak. I would love to see someone build one of those 70's LTD and get it under the index. |

I wonder when Hp will be dropped as the standard. Seems the way the factors sit and the very slow adjustments and next years bogus hps it keeps hurting everyone but those with the money to move around cars or give up if disgusted with the deal.
