Division 6 double header at Pacific

:D:D Had a great time there yesterday. Talked with many of my friends. Saw lots of good runs and was able to help some friends with their S/G car. Sorry the weather went away just as the Gambler got started. Just wondering, I don't see anything on Drag Race Central yet. Is the weather cooperating and is DRC there to report?? Hope all goes well for everyone and qualifying is very quick. Good luck to Mark Faul with the new combo in the El Camino.

:) A side note: watched Shawn Cowie spit a blower belt. It is now signed by him hanging on my garage wall. What a class act he is.

It started raining a little after 8:30 for about an hour or so. It's not raining now though.

Re: Division 6 double header at Pacific

They were pretty far along in the drying process and were working on getting the top end dry when it started raining again. It's raining pretty hard right now. Might have to go into elims with no time runs as they have a 5PM curfew here.

Re: Division 6 double header at Pacific

:( Thanks for the updates Toby. Looks like the weather is going to win today. That would really suck having to go into elims with no time runs. Especially for Mark Faul with the new stock combo in his El Camino. With an 11 o'clock curfew on Friday, maybe you can get 1 time run before elims. Anyway, good luck to all and hope the rest of the weekend goes better. The weather forecast that I have seen is for no rain Friday through Sunday. Of course, we all know good luck on that.

Re: Division 6 double header at Pacific

They just called it for today. They said we will get one maybe two time runs tomorrow.

Thanks Ron. Nothing like running a brand new deal with no dyno, lots of updates (brakes and suspension). Break it in on q1. Guess this is what separates the men from the boys!

Looking at the qualifying lists on Drag Race Central,,, it looks like the divisional race outdrew the national event only a couple weeks ago as far as car count. No surprise there.

Hi Toby. Excellent videos as always. With the long time span between rounds I assume there was either a late start and/or several oildowns yesterday. Sorry you are out early, but great videos. Did Bill Parmenter blow it up bigtime and then was Jim Davison re-enstated??

Quick question Toby. Did the upper pit area seem a little unorganized or is it just me?? Had to pick and choose a route with the golf cart on Wednesday.

Not sure if I've been to a more poorly run race than this one.

How does 1 qual run and 2 rounds of competition in a 12.5 hour period sound to everyone? That's how it went on Friday.

1 qualifying run for us I can understand. Weather washed out all of Thursday.

Alcohol getting 3 qualifying runs was a decision that boggles the mind!

:confused: I was wondering the same thing. I wasn't there to see what all was going on, but seemed a little slow if weather wasn't a factor. Not much you can do about it, but doesn't make sense.

Re: Division 6 double header at Pacific

We need a "NEW" Division Director, I had a good half hour conversation with ours on Saturday and he is in way over his head !!!!!!! Just my opinion ! He had us in the lanes Friday morning 1.5 hours before the track was done being prepped, Then was yelling at us in the lanes Saturday morning to hurry up ?
He said he had racers calling him in the morning wanting run orders changed to better "fit" their racing needs because they run two cars ? I feel this kind of manipulation could create an unfair advantage ! How far has it gone? How long has it been going on ? What other "inside" advantages are being used ? I want a level playing field.....I want a director who can not be manipulated ! Remember, This is just my opinion and i had to express it.......

Jim Caughlin 08-19-2013 08:09 PM

Re: Division 6 double header at Pacific

Actually Kelly, he mentioned that to me also but I got the distinct impression that he wasn't going to budge on this. He said that getting to the lanes on time was the responsibility of the racer regardless of whether he has one car or two. As a matter of fact, I watched him reprimand Torres for being late so he seems to be taking it seriously.

As long as I'm on my soapbox (and there may be differing views on this), I hope that in spite of the problems that we had this weekend that we have more double headers. It seems like a win-win situation financially for the track and the racers, the car count indicates that this has some appeal. Next time, I think that it would be best that it be done at a race without the regional Alcohol classes and the Harleys, those factor put it over the edge timewise.

Also, thanks to Toby for his video work. We all appreciate your time and effort.

Re: Division 6 double header at Pacific

I’m not sure my opinion is really worth anything other than I attended this cluster of a race. It seemed like a good idea to have a double header race but the execution was lacking. It was unfortunate that rain put a dent in the schedule on Thursday and the Division Director was forced to make some difficult decisions about the schedule going forward-having said that-you live in the Northwest where it rains 9 months out of the year-have a back up plan ready. A 3rd qualifier for the Alcohol classes (when everyone one else managed to get their race on with just one) was probably not the best decision. Then there were the Top Fuel Harleys. I’m sure the track thought this was a big draw for spectators and I have no doubt that the 7-10 fans in the stands really enjoyed it but seriously…it was a big unnecessary time drain.
There is no way when you assemble 400 plus racers at an event that you are going to make everyone happy especially when you throw rain delays in the mix. But here’s the thing…NHRA is a business-they provide a service so that you can race or enjoy attending. The racers (and crews) are NHRA’s customers-from Top Fuel on down. You want to stay in business-you better have some people skills and learn to handle these challenging situations with some integrity. I firmly believe the racers have valuable input and suggestions but from what I saw this weekend and in Division 6 races this year, you voice a concern respectfully it is viewed as something derogatory and it is belittled. What upset me the most was not the schedule changes, delays etc. because some things are just out of your control but I’m referring to the reactions and actions as there were inflammatory remarks, yelling and screaming by the NHRA division officials and the inconsistency in the way the race was run and the “on the fly” new rules that were not enforced but constantly being crammed down our throats. I’m not saying that officials and Directors should kiss the racer’s *** and say pretty please pair up and move on-but what went on this weekend was unacceptable and uncalled for. Racers are adults and if you treat them with respect, you should expect to get their respect in return. I know the officials get frustrated and I can certainly appreciate the long hours they put in at each race and I appreciate all the efforts-but racers do put in a lot of effort from building their cars to traveling to the races. They pay very high entry fees and for that, some sort of decent treatment should be expected-just general regard for opinions and input and know that there are frustrations and address them as you would want to be addressed.
I’ve been involved in this sport in some capacity since 1990 and have been through ups and down-been discouraged and disappointed in myself and sometimes in the NHRA itself. But we adapt and we persevere and we come back to the next race with a renewed spirit and hope. Here’s hoping our that the Division Director understands that racers are not the problem and want to be a part of the solution. Racers are not the enemy so quit attacking them.
My disclaimer-these are solely MY opinions.

Your opinion is well put,,, whoever you are. Most of us DO identify ourselves on here. Theres a few officials, around here, that certainly have less than stellar people skills,, actually, the main one I had in mind was very nice to me when I hopped in the NHRA trailer at Boise earlier this year, I was shocked. As for our current division director, I wasn't around to witness what happened this weekend, but from what limited time I've spent around him, its a big step up from where we were before him. I think hes still growing into the job and there again, that's just one guys opinion.

You're welcome, Dave. Congratulations on the big win! Glad I could help document it for you. Now it's Herman's turn to get in the winner's circle. :)

I wish I had video of my first class win in Ashcroft back in 1997. I don't have any video, but I do have a few pictures.

Here's a shot of the final round against Bill Heard Jr. It was a heavy affair:

:rolleyes: People skills is probably the biggest need "IF" you are going to be in charge of a race situation. From what I have heard the race was lacking direction and communication. I have seen the D.D. tell people to stay in the pits until called and then when they show up tell them to hurry up and go. Doesn't sound organized to me, but I wouldn't want the job. The idea of double header races sounds like an economical idea that should work very well. Two races, one event, limited traveling needed. Sounds like a great plan that can be expanded on in the future.

Side note: Great pictures Toby, especially of your mom, still miss her.

Hey Toby,

Great pics of Ashcroft! I had forgotten about that, but the memories came back quick...

Maybe one day the other old Mulkey "Q" will find the winner's circle, just need to find the driver to get over the "yips"....

Hope all is well!

Cheers!
