NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
http://www.competitionplus.com/drag-...stock-showdown
Hopefully, this will increase interest and participation. Even though only 9 cars participated at Indy last year, I thought it was a good show and I enjoyed it thoroughly. This makes my annual trip to E-town and Indy even better. I already have my tickets for the 4 Wide Nationals next month; if I didn't I would go to Charlotte in Sept. instead of April. |
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
So now they have fixed the indexes so all the new cars qualify for Indy. Last year they all ran on a 9.90 index and now they get .30 back and the non-supercharged cars get .60. So what are they going to give all the carb cars? How about .80 for old technology so we can make the show?
Englishtown and Charlotte won't be qualified fields, but Indy will be a big problem and it is just wrong! |

Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
larry, there wont be any carb cars next year... well maybe by 2014.
you should ask for 40hp off for being pink...50/50 they might approve it :) captain jack |
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
At least they have good taste in photos! :D

Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Brett C, I agree....great photo and its Wheels-up Wednesday as an extra bonus!
|
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Great photo I agree. Last year at Indy was great to see the finals ran with a pair of CJs infront of a pair of Hemi cars the Hemi Shootout finals. I thought that was appropriate to see the New and old cars staged together.

Sam I think that is great for a show at all national events. My main point is that it will give the 2008 up cars a 0.3 softer index that have a blower or the V-10; and soften the index of the N/A cars by 0.7. It looks like if the "new cars" will start, move, and make some sort of exhaust noise they will be in the field of 128. I for one do not want to be on the outside looking in @ Indy because NHRA swayed the rules for Factory Stock Showdown like last years pro stock motorcycle. |
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Anybody wanting to qualify at Indy with an older car might have to build a Pickup Truck.

Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Larry, first off Happy Anniversary! Wouldn't the "NEW CARS" qualify in the top portion of the 128 anyway based on the current factors?
Unless you tried to run them "as delivered", which none of the fast cars are. |
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Still no supercharged cars?
|
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Paul,
It is just for Stock, not Super Stock FS/DC: Minimum weight 451 + CID 3200Lbs, all supercharged 3500Lbs, index 10.20 |
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Lets look at the cars that missed the 128 car field. #134 was -.771 under now with the 0.30 index adjustment the same car will be -1.071 under, I know it is not fair to the rest of us that will not receive the same 0.30 index adjustment. #146 was -.705 under now with the add-on -1.075. What a disappointment in judgment by NHRA. How is this fair??
|
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
4 factory cars missed the show last year.
This is about the money Larry and has nothing to do with fairness. This outfit wants to be about money and only masquerade as a racing organization. With these guys more is never enough. They make these bogus proclamations and then run back under their rock - a big flat, smooth rock that a cow is eyeing with a full bladder. |
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
I really like Indy ,but I'm gonna sit this year out ,I thought for sure I would make it last year but didn't, its getting really tough. I'm like a year behind every year lol! I pick up the car every year, but it does no good its just tough as you all already know!!
I will go to watch because its a good time and I do like the new cars. |

They were referring to 4 cars that participated in the Factory car showdown that missed qualifying for the event. Some of the cars were far from the factory produced turnkey(or hit the red "that was easy" Start button not a key) I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the index change. It is what it is. |

Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Give me 0.60 on index and my car is 1.240 under and I am in the show! I would like to here from the SRAC why the Factory Showdown cars get the index break and we (the old cars with carbs do not). The Showdown cars get an extra choice of witch class to run: the natural class, a class above, or a class below, or the Showdown class!
Running the Factory Showdown cars at other venues is ok by me, it is not a qualified field and it is a good show. NHRA does not need to pollute, I mean dilute, the pride of qualifying for our most prestigious race. Come on SRAC fix this before Indy |
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
I'd say that after they run some events the Index will be adjusted to appropriate places. Just have to get a data pool to pull from. Right now they have 1 race with limited entry's and it was primarily 5.4 TVS Cobra Jets with some 5.0 Whipple Cobra Jets and one V-10 Drag Pack. Since then they also messed with the weights so now Data is insufficient.
Cliff notes: This year is two seperate classes within the Factory Stock Showdown AC/DC. AC-Less then 400ci NA gained 250#(up from 3000) and Index adjusted .6 AC-Between 401-450ci NA gained 350#(up from 3000) and index adjusted .6 DC-Over 450ci NA lost 275#(down from 3475) and index adjusted .3 DC-Supercharged cars lost 175# (down from 3675) and index adjusted .3 The winner of each class squares off against day other for overall. |
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Don't worry about V10s .. we can only get to 3200 with out a driver..LMAO
Not real friendly for a west coast competitor RON |

If everything that is stated in that article was followed by, "for stock class only and not the eliminator or qualifing for the eliminator", it would be fine.....

Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Why not super stock? If the point is to race the big three new cars then why not race them all?
|
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Paul , They dont want those blown copo blowing up on the track, Ha ha

OUCH!!! Ford Boy..

Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Why are we spending so much time comparing the rules of last year's showdown to this year's showdown?
The 427 COPO/427 or 428 CJ/6.1 DP/6.4 DP will all run CC/SA (10.60 index) at 3350#-3500#. So, at 3350#, is a 10.50 index REALLY that outrageous? The blower cars and the V-10 are all around 500hp. So they'll run BB/SA (10.30 index) at 3670#. So, at 3500# (or 3200# for the V-10 which probably isn't realistic), is a 10.20 index, while soft, REALLY that outrageous? And who says NHRA won't adjust the index between now and September? They did adjust it last year. I don't see how the showdown cars will qualify much different than if they were in their natural Stock classes. I do think there will be better participation from the N/A cars this year. And didn't everybody want these cars in their own class in the first place??? |
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
In my case last year at Indy I was within .055 of not qualifing. So every pound remove from my competion or adjustment of index pushes my well thrash combination closer to not making the show. The cold hard facts of life for me is I have only a few Indys left.
|
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
They won't do it but Indy should become a 144 car field if they keep finding creative ways to make the eliminator tougher for the carbureted cars. 8 round race with bonus points for the winner.

Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
I don't run Stock, but am just curious. Since those cars are SO under factored, why would they have a softer index than the stock class they fit?
If somebody wants to run the cars & engines like they came, do they really deserve to qualify at Indy? Seems like guys like Patterson and Barton have shown how fast those things are if prepped like the older cars. Todd Patterson pushed that CC/SA COPO in neutral at 1000' first pass at No Problem last week and went 1.27 under. I guess the 427" COPO racers are glad it was test & tune day, the race had not started. Yeah, they need a tenth softer index. LOL |

Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Tuning the computer on a normally aspirated EFI engine is NOTHING like adjusting the boost on a turbo. How in the world did you come up with that?
You can only adjust spark advance and air/fuel ratio. Like altering the advance curve in a distributor (something we have been doing for over 50 years) and changing carburetor jets and air bleeds, again something we have been doing for over 50 years. Biggest difference is the air/fuel ratio can be adjusted every 500 RPM or so. That, and no dirty hands. There is no magic there. I've been in business since Feb 1972, other than the incremental fueling adjustments, and incremental timing adjustments (very little-to-zero gains there if everything else is right) there is no power advantage to EFI computers. The newest stuff is just crazy under-rated. |

Can the computers on these cars be adjusted cylinder by cylinder for things like retarding timing providing a better launch where a carb/distributor combination cannot? |
Re: NHRA Expands Factory Stock Showdown
Bobby , FAST and Big Stuff 3 allow you to control timing at the launch, so you could retard your timing say 6 degree's and ramp it back in over a 2 or 3 seconds . Some system's you can control A/F for individual cylinders however most cars are not doing that yet but some are . These are all legal as all the newer 2008 -2013 cars came with computers and can make these adjustments
