National Dragster publication changes??

Really? Just heard the ND is going to twice a month. Any truth to this rumor?

Re: National Dragster publication changes??

They have had the electronic version for a few years now. Its always supposed to be 48 issues, but last year I only got 47, so didn't even get what I paid for last year. I also bet that if it is now only 24 issues that they don't cut the price any. More enhancements.

Who reads ND anymore? Only half of them are any good any way. If it was not for the Emmon's or Fletcher's Articals I would not even open the ND. I really don't care what John forces and his girls are doing every week.

With Dragracecentral, I rarely open National dragster. I was depressed when they went away from "newpaper" style, to "magazine". I couldn't use it for painting anymore.

Re: National Dragster publication changes??

I most definitely like the magazine style best as I can hang it on a piece of wire in the chitter. Just reach up and rip a page out and leave it hanging for the next trip. Every week will give you enough to go thru a week. Dont know if it will last 2 weeks.
All kiddin aside, I have seen many magazines in our industry go to "under" and be gone for ever. Any thing that still keeps us aware of our racing needs to be kept alive by what ever means possible. Just remember, we are in a sport that is no longer the hottest item on the planet. It is a diminishing "need". We will continue to loose followers as we die out "sorry for using the word, but it is true". So what makes us think that our reading is not going to follow our suit.
Now this doesnt mean that they are doing it justice. Many and most of these people are in it to make money and may no longer do it justice but it still is better than the alternative of nothing. So lets keep trying to get these people to do a better job of keeping us aware but lets dont push it off the cliff.

When I renewed last month the girl told me they were going to 47 issues. Nothing about 24 issues. Jim

Zero point zero.

I still selected electronic last year because I was bad about saving stacks and stacks of them. I already regret it since I started running the NHRA events, and don't have the hard copies to give my sponsor.

Michael, you can call the publication and reverse it,I did this last spring. Took about three weeks to get the paper in the mail again.

They take four (five now) weeks off at Christmas and New Years. You won't get a ND until the end of the month. Jim

I don't subscribe anymore because I can get all the info I need from sources like this site.
If you are a driver/owner and want to enter national events do you still have to have a subscription to ND to belong to NHRA and access certain features of NHRA website?
Never liked that .
Dan.

Yes you do. To clearify, you have to be a member of the NHRA and the national dragster is included.

John, I was also waiting for issue 48 so I called NHRA membership services. I was informed that only 47 issues are published because they combined 2 issues into 1 at some point during the season (I do remember something about that, but I can't remember the specific issue). When you join, or renew, you will get 47 issues of ND instead of the 48 that were published before.

Re: National Dragster publication changes??

I just received my NHRA renewal notice, and while the old renewal forms always said "48 issues of National Dragster", now it just says "National Dragster, now in your choice of Print,Digital, or Both for your computer and mobile device", but no longer mentions the number of issues provided.
Also, as a Canadian, since our CDN dollar has been pretty much at par for the past several years, I would sure like to know why we still have to pay $36.00 a year extra to be a member. ($105 US dollars compared to $69.00 USD.)

Int'l postage maybe?

I agree with this statement. Thats why on my renewal I canned the ND printed version. A savings of money. Rarely read it anyways.

You can be a member and not get or pay for the dragster if you are a associate member. You get every thing but the dragster. The catch is you have to sign up under a full member (may have to have the same mailing address I don't remember)

x 2!!! I love having an actual Rulebook in my hand. IHRA made the rulebook on a CD for one year. People disliked it, so they went back to a paper rulebook after. Like someone once said here "What are the tech officials/Association officials going to do--walk around with a laptop in their back pocket?!" Just another case of paying more, and getting less.

Several years ago, you got the rule book included, AND a "free" T shirt. Now you get neither, but you still get a hat pin. Yipeee.

Be thankful for the free t-shirt. I`ve been a member since `82 and have never gotten a shirt unless I paid for it. I still don`t have one.

Been a member since late '60s, don't remember any tee shirts.

Ask Jeff, probably a member since '55. Used to wear a beer opener on a string around his neck until pop tops came along.

I always try to renew my membership at the National event in Joliet every year, and by doing so ,I get a free NHRA membership t-shirt.

Jeff Kempton 01-13-2013 10:20 PM

Re: National Dragster publication changes??

If I remember correctly; for awhile you got a free t-shirt if you renewed at the midway kiosk at a national event. At other times they gave you one of the Diamond P tapes. I used to renew at Englishtown every year to get the extra perk. I don't think it was offered if you renewed via mail.

Regardless of how you slice it you don't get nearly as much for your money now. As far as the cost difference for Canada, while I agree that postage to Canada is a higher it doesn't justify the large price spread between us and the U.S.

Over on Drag Racing Online they are still saying the Dragster will go to every other week!!!They just posted it again today.

Re: National Dragster publication changes??

I've been told from a direct source that it's official. Biweekly. The change must have been sudden because they had already announced the weekly schedule at the end of last year. I know it represents a loss for subscribers and it's hard for me to conceive of Dragster as anything but a weekly, but it is a boost for advertisers, who now get two weeks worth of time and more chance that their ad will actually be viewed before the next issue arrives.

All publishing has taken a huge hit in the past decade. Dragster is no exception. It remains the leading publication in the sport, and as a contributing columnist, i hope that the publication earns the support of its members.

Can anybody say "reorganization" They need to bring the "Bob's" in, new blood, differen't set of eyes to look at this internal structure of NHRA.

racerhead 01-17-2013 03:44 PM

Re: National Dragster publication changes??

What historically made National Dragster special and important was the immediate source of results and photos. in the past decade immediate has taken on a whole new meaning. Results are available on the web instantly and ND has become increasingly irrelevant. Everyone knows that fact and they had to change. The best that the paper had to offer was getting missed because people weren't picking it up to get results.

i just got news that will be printed in issue #1 for this year, outlining the changes. They've developed a companion website to ND that will offer the immediacy of the web along with the biweekly paper or electronic magazine. Freed up from reporting results that are weeks old, the magazine is going to offer more feature articles, more sportsman coverage, and technical articles.

Let's hope it gives us more of what we want.

News says ND subscribers will now have access to both the print and online editions along with the new online content. I just sent $84 in last week for the print and online access through the "old" program. Will they send me back the $15 I overpaid?
