My 67 Shelby updates

Well I figured I would be the first to post in the new section. Please feel free to post your builds or updates. Make sure you start you own thread and title it as your own, don't add to this thread unless you have questions or comments on my updates.
When the season ends I am always looking to update my race car. Whether its small or large, I always like to do something in the off season. My first update was to add a power cut off handle inside the car. I can't tell you many times I have gotten into my car and forgot to turn on the power. Every year I tell myself I am going to put a handle in, but never seem to get around to it. Well this year I did. I took a piece flat stock 1/4 inch aluminum and cut to size and drilled some holes to make it look nice along with a contour for your hand. I used another piece flat stock to act as the lever on the cut of switch. It worked out great and I could not be happier. The next update was the dash. Greg Kelley from MOTORSPORTS Innovations hook me up with a Racepak Dash unit. He is a Class Racer sponsor and is great to deal with, if you need any help with Racepak products, he is the man to go to. I love new technology and always wanted one in my car. I already have a Racepak data logger so the install was as simple as plugging into the Racepak logger and it recognizes all sensors. I get oil pressure, water temp, air fuel ratio, volts, fuel pressure and of course a tach. I can also add more if I wish. I left my old tach in place just in case I don't like the way the shift light works. I don't use a shift light, but the new dash has 5 lights on each side of the top part of the dash, they go from green to amber to red so you can get ready for the shift. You can set how fast the lights comes on. If it works well I will get rid of the old tach. Well that's it for now, if I do anymore updates, I will be sure add to this thread. |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Looks GREAT Ken! Glad to see this section added as well.

Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Love the inside power cutoff setup. Is that a transmission cable that hooks it all up?
|
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Dion,
Yes, its a shifter cable. You can uses shifter brackets to hold the cable or fab something up. Its a fairly simple job. |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
.....OR, if your fabricating skills are lacking, the folks at Lokar make a nice alternative. :)

Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Dave,
I agree totaly, they make great stuff. My skills are just okay, but I like doing it, it's therapeutic for me. |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Great idea on the interior shut off,

Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Kenny....what did you decide to do engine wise.....old or new....?
And the inside shutoff switch is mandatory ......on our cars...lol |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Hey Rock,
I'm going to stick with the old 428. I know, I know I said was going to go with new technology, but I want to stay in stock. Besides, I still get to drive the new stuff, Anthony's 3 Valve CJ and The Hawk and Cook CJ. I was spoiled when I was driving Anthony’s CJ, I love the inside cut off switch. |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Stock runs so early.....lol

I wanted to keep the back seat and the passenger seat stock, but NHRA had other ideas, so with that I decided to remove the back seat and completely remove the factory look of the seating.
When I was doing this project I kind of forgot about my build, so I did not take photos until half way through the project. The photo of the stock seat is not mine, looks to nice for my car anyway. I just wanted show what the stock seat looks like. I used .040 aluminum along with a carpet material used for speaker boxes. I decided to fabricate, I could have bought a rear seat delete made out of fiberglass, but I would have had to cut it up to make it fit and they are very pricey. The materials were less the $75 and it took about about a day to finish. I used cardboard to make a template and make the cut out for the tunnel. I used 3M adhesive to attach the material to the aluminum. I use four trim screws to attach the panels. I made it two pieces for easy removal and to make it fit. I would not have been able to fit it between the roll bar if it was one piece. The rear piece gives me access to the upper rear shock mounts, remove one trim screw and I get easy access. The total weight savings for swapping out the factory seating was 60lbs. All I have left is to clean up the factory panels and paint the roll bar. When test fitting the aluminum sheets it was hard not to hit the roll bar, lots of scratch's to fill. |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Ken I like it, looks like a clean install
|
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Ken, that looks nice!
I have a question about your Shelby - Are you using the factory piece between the trunk and the passenger compartment, it looks like you may have changed it to an aluminum panel? I think it's required when using an aftermarket fuel tank in the trunk? I haven't gotten to my interior yet but I wasn't sure if I should use the stock pieces or build one out of aluminum. |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Thanks Yankee, the carpet is what makes it look clean. The aluminum does not have to be perfect and I'm far from being a good fabricator.
Mike, The panel in the back is factory and I think NHRA would be ok with it as long as it does not open like the way it came from the factory. If its fasten, I think your good to go. With that said, I do have another barrier made out of aluminum. its more to the trunk side. |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Looks good Ken !!!! Great idea with the build section for posting.....interesting stuff !!!

Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Good job Ken, I never realized that there was that much room in the back of my 67 Mustang. Looks real nice. Claude

Here is my seat compliance update. I have installed a my "identical in appearance" seat. Now if only I could get my engine finished I could try out my new safety features.

Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Kenny,
Are you sure the inside power shut off lever is legal and/or safe? It is possible to imagine a car part or body part (ie a bent shifter support or the driver's leg, respectively) blocking this lever following a severe crash. This, in turn, could interfere with an outside safety official from successfully shutting off the power (to your fuel pump). On a convenience level it sure looks useful! Re: My 67 Shelby updates
There is nothing in the rule book about the master cutoff off switch being able to be activate both in and out of the car.
There are many scenarios of what could happen in a crash. Suppose I hit the wall with the rear of the car and the push pull rod gets bent? Suppose I sustain damage to the rear and the switch can not be reach. I think the likely hood of my leg getting over the large side bolster of my racing seat is highly unlikely. I guess my leg could snap and get twisted in a server crash, but with a crash like that I would most likely not survive anyway. I feel its makes my car safer. I don't have to reach for the ignition if a get in trouble, just a quick pull of the handle and all power is off. Its also great if there is a throttle issue or you just need to shut the engine off quickly. For me, its my panic switch. |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Looks great Ken
.Any questions just ask the Gass Monkeys..they no everything about Shelby mustangs ..LOL |

Re: My 67 Shelby updates
I Don't think there is any problem with the drivers compartment master Cut-off operation. In fact, I've had that very thing in all of my home built race cars since 1995, almost 20 years now. The main reason was SAFETY, and the ability for me to shut down all electrical components prior to track personal getting to my car which could be 15 seconds or more. That's a lot of extra gas spraying around and wires burning possibly. I also learned how nice this component was when I got all belted in the car and had forgot to turn the Cut-off switch on! LOL I have a sweet Idea for the RACEtoration Corvette here on CR builds. I feel that all racing should not only allow this, but strongly suggest that all racers update to this simple and cheap safety upgrade. NASCAR has had driver master cut-off for years.

Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Ken, nothing worse than being belted in and no one to turn the switch back on(that you had every intention to turn it on before entering the race car but forgot), I'm building the same in my car. thanks p.s. patent pending Ken?

Latest update for the Shelby was a much need paint job. I could not decide what color to go with, so I went with Wimbledon White with a modified version of the Super Snake stripes that come on a one off 67 427 Shelby. Check out some more photos at the link below. The body and paint was done by Eric Bardekoff. Many of you on the east coast know Eric and his Dad Jeff. Eric is the owner of EB Custom Works, and I can tell you his work is amazing.
Check out his website and the other builds he is working on. Eric is also a sponsor of Class Racer. http://ebcustomworks.com/ebcustom/?p...io=1967-shelby |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Looks great Ken, love the stock type paint scheme. Whats the story on the gold 67 Fairlane, is it also a race car?

Ken,
Nothing against your Shelby but I want to know more about the green '67 Fairlane in the background. Jim Caughlin SS 6019 |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Looks GREAT Ken! Now you need to change the letters on the windshield to AA/S! LOL
|
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Love the colors. Good choice!

Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Great colors and a beautiful race car! :) -Al
|
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Thanks all, Eric did a great job. The Fairlane is a street car. Its an original 390 GT that came red on red. Why the customer wanted that color, I don't know. The car does look good, but its not my taste, I would have stuck with red on red.
As far as a putting it in AA/S, I don't think that will happen, but you never know. |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Hi Ken,
I have had a master cut off in my cars since my first A/EA in 1982 and the Nova has one also. I would not have a car without one inside. Ken Keir A/SA 1470 |
Re: My 67 Shelby updates
Car looks great Ken..really like the color choice(s)! Best of luck this year!
