Not only did he drive stockers, but he ran super stockers too. I know SE Buchanan won a bunch and I learned a lot about life from the man as well.

Best stick shift racer in my opinion, Kent Hanley with his stocker camaro and the SS Caviler. He has since then went to auto in the super Stocker and no longer has the
stocker. Kent is a div 1 racer

Kevin was my first thought when I read the title, but I believe he started winning Divs and Nats in about 94 -95

I'm going with this guy. He was good long before all the fancy clutches and transmissions we now have. Told me he just bought another stick car.

I think winning back to back world championships with a big block stick car in an era of stock eliminator that rewards consistency more than all out performance says an awful lot about a car and driver.

I still say Kevin Helms

1) Kevin Helms
2) Jim Waldo
3) Gary Long
4) Ben Wenzel
5) Jason McCormack

Re: what was/ who had the most successful stick shift stocke

In the time period listed I'd say SE Buchanan. Lots of BIG Wallys in the shop at Kuntz & Co.

After that time period Jim Waldo and Kevin Helms are bad to the bone.

Re: what was/ who had the most successful stick shift stocke

Helms is surely a top 5 player. Can't forget my hero "Jimmy Bridges".

Re: what was/ who had the most successful stick shift stocke

I would hate to have to pick - and you would have to define what is meant by the "most successful" - most wins - most championships - most consistent - most friends (LOL)

I think there is room on the podium for more than one - many mentioned here

I always admired Jim Waldo and what he has able to do and I think Kevin Helms and Jim Hughes are very very good as well

For the time period I'd go with Jimmy Bridges. Overall, Kevin Helms. Actually Chad, I think Kevin was back to back to back 2001-2003 World Champ.
Pretty impressive.

Jimmy has run Super Stock mostly for the 30 or so years I've known him. He has at times made a pass or two in a Stock Eliminator car.

My personal Stick Shift hero has to be my mentor SE Buchanan. Won Div 4 Stock Championship 4 years in a row, 76,77,78,79, with a stick shift Ford before Jerico transmissions. Also won the 78 Sportsnationals and 82 US Nationals.

Re: what was/ who had the most successful stick shift stocke

gosh there was so many great ones, i hate these popularity threads, picking the best is like trying to get 100 SS racers to decide a rule change, going to have 97 different opinions, lol so.........I feel anybody that drove a stick shift car and won was successful. even my own father.

As everyone can see we all have our favorites, you will get no argument from me on any of the choices.
Showing my age and geographic location I am going with Joe Delorenzo.
If you have to ask I am sorry you never got to see him drive, I was lucky enough to hang around him and to just listen to him talk about racing and Chevys was something else.
We lost a great one way to soon.

Re: what was/ who had the most successful stick shift stocke

Kevin Helms won 3 straight World Titles if I recall right. Pretty hard to do better than that.
Jim Waldo won many times over the years in various cars. Also tough to match his record....
Jim Hughes was another racer that sure could win the big races....

Many guys did well for a few years and could be listed but I don't think anyone could match the previous 3....

Alan Peters was always one of my favorites from this area....and way back....Truman Fields with his Hard Times Firebird.....

Re: what was/ who had the most successful stick shift stocke

Well if it's no holds barred.......

How about Kenny Dondero driving Bob Panella's Anglia running a 292CI Small Block Chevy with a blower and a 4 speed in B/GS........................

No Clutchless Transmissions...........

No Slipper Clutches.................
