Lloyd Bray

It is with a heavy heart I tell everyone of the passing of Lloyd Bray. Lloyd passed early this morning. As most know it is a blessing as the last few years were not as Lloyd would have liked to live. He aws a great freind and mentor to me as he taught me all of my machining skills. Lloyd was a pioneer in the early days of the sport and will be greatly missed. D.G. told me there will be no services for Lloyd but instead a memorial of sorts probably at the Topeka Points race or national as Lloyd was at his best at the racetrack. R.I.P. and godspeed my freind!

Re: Lloyd Bray

I am sorry to see this.
Lloyd got me in to my first National event in Huston 1992. I had only one points meet at Dallas The week before.
He, Jason Line, D.G. and my self went in to the tower at Dallas and Lloyd told the Div. 4 director "Do you see these boys?, They are the future of NHRA!"
I guess 20 years down the road maybe he was correct.
I got to know quite a few good people through him.
He even came up to Minnesota one winter to ride snowmobile with us.
(That was quite an experience)
I went to his shop in O.K.& learned from him and D.G.how to work on carburetors and race engines. He taught me A lot, I will never forget him and his loud crazy laugh.
He was a true sportsman drag-racer!
For what it's worth he once told me this....
" Kid... drag racing isn't a hobby,..it's a way of life."

Condolences to D.G. and family.

R.I.P. Lloyd

RIP Lloyd. Some of my earliest and most fun memories of class racing are from watching Lloyd and DG testing their cars at the Tulsa track.

Lloyd always was smiling and having fun and a friend to everyone. He was one of the ones that is what class racing is all about.

I was saddened when I received the call from D.G. this morning. I'm sure most of us that raced with Lloyd in his day have many fond memories of his stories and eccentricities. Given his condition of the past few years he is now in a better place, probably trading stories with his good friend the late Tom DeCamp. R.I.P. Lloyd.

Thank you for posting this Ed. He was as close to me as he was to you. His influence, teachings and personality touched all he was around all over the U.S., not just those that lived close to him or were taught by him. I am glad to have had the time with him i had, i definitely learned from one of the old school great ones! May he rest in peace.

It is most certainly true that the Good Lord moves in mysterious ways. This morning, as I was poking around on Class Racer, I stumbled upon this thread that I started back in June of '09.

http://classracer.com/classforum/showthread.php?t=18479

As I reread the entire post, it became more evident what a unique, well liked individual Lloyd was. Through DG and Daniel's efforts, some of these stories were shared with Lloyd. The ClassRacer family managed to brighten Lloyd's day and bring a smile to his face if only briefly and let him know how many people he really touched during his time on Earth.

R.I.P. Lloyd

Lloyd was a stick shift racer as we all know. I raced against him a number of times back in the day. A fierce competitor and a class guy. He always had a kind word to say. Will be missed by many. God speed Lloyd Bill Davis

Re: Lloyd Bray

I met Lloyd & DG at the Denver Mile High Nationals while I was racing A/FS with my Shelby Daytona. I was building my AMX for Stock at the time and Lloyd was intrigued by the combo and he really, I mean sincerely, wanted to help with the 4300 Autolite. I sent him a core. Soon thereafter, I made it to a test-n-tune for the first time borrowing a poorly jetted, no jet extension, no slosh tube 750 DP Holley. I ran 12.65 ET with it chugging & not pulling past 5K.
The following week Lloyds Autolite arrived. I placed it on the car and headed to the track. First pass; huge wheelie, even in 2nd gear and 11.65 ET! I called Lloyd immediately and thanked him. Trouble was, he would never give me a price....so I waited for the bomb to drop, knowing Q-jets went for $500+...he said "I love that you are so excited about this, how does $250 sound?" I said it sounded really good!
That carb has always been on my car. Tried changing the air-bleeds on the dyno. Nothing I could do to improve it.
We spoke many times over the years because he was just the nicest guy to talk to. He warned me long ago to not obsess over the sport as it could ruin you! Naturally, he was the first I called when I set a record and qualified well.
He'd say, "oh, Jeff...I told you to be careful!"
DG, you have lost a great friend. But this has been approaching for a while now, so I hope you two had plenty of good times while he was in long-term care. The two of you will go down as one of the great partnerships in NHRA history.
I'm saddened by his loss but know he is in heaven enjoying that great-big drag strip in the sky!
4-speeds forever,
Jeff

Re: Lloyd Bray

I was at the 77 US National with Arlen Fadely it was the year he won Modified when Lloyd can over to talk to Fadely he told him that he had someone who wanted to buy his car as it was for sale at that time. That someone turned out to be Mike Edwards, Mike looked at it but didn't buy it then. In 78 we had just got pitted at Indy and Lloyd showed up again and told him Mike was there to buy the car. Mike showed up Saturday with the money but car, 2 spare engines, rear ends, spare Doug Nash Trans and Trailer!

Re: Lloyd Bray

What a sad day for those who knew Lloyd. He and DG were my favorites as a little kid and I always tried my best to find them at the races. I remember at the Denver national in the late 80's, my little sister hit her head on the trailer and Lloyd was so worried about her, that he checked on her nonstop all day long. He could have been more concerned with his race car but he wasn't. Just shows the kind of man he was. In the 34 years that I knew Lloyd I still have fond memories of him and will always cherish his kindness.

DG - may you find comfort and peace in knowing that Lloyd is in a lot better place.
