"Live" from the Hurricane Irene Nationals presented by RainX

Just thought I would give some perspective to everyone out there from hurricane alley. According to last reports it is expected to make landfall very close to where I am normally pitted when not racing. The "track" of this storm's eye should pass within 25 to 30 miles of us on the east. I thoughtgoing to Charlotte to run superstreet was a good idea but my wife was not as ammused by the idea as I had hoped. Right now in the process of batting down the hatches and will be back for further updates and possibly some cool pictures, not the class of pics you guys get from Lang or Beard but I will try to atleast make Cantore proud.

I do plan to go to darlington chip ic my crap don't get blowed away hope to see you there. My wife just informed that the governor's state of emergency doesn't mean that I had to immediately go lock the car and trailer in the shop at that moment. I asked had she ever heard of looting, who's the smart one around here now? More ominous signs that we are in trouble is the Weather Channel truck driving through town and Wal-Mart announcing they will close before tje storm gets here, really I didn't realize they would close for anything. That's all for tonight it will be a big day tomorrow and hopefully I can get a pic of the Weather Channel's Stephanie Abrahms to post for you guys.

We just rolled into the hotel and didn't hit any rain from FL to here. I hope it stays that way.

Chip, Stephanie Abrams is a Gator and we're proud of her.

Stephanie is definately a hottie, but this weekend she's a Tarheel. Woke up this morning and it is absolutely a beautiful day with a few high, thin clouds. Didn't have time to get the weather station out to get any readings before heading to the woods to try and get up the remaining wood we have cut before all the rain gets here. Thought it might be interesting to see what kind of DA and vp readings we get before during and after the storm along with barometric pressure.

Sitting here in Daytona Beach Shores watching Irene pass by app 175 miles off shore.... The best way to have a hurricane pass by.... High surf, angry looking seas, rain and wind squals but not as bad as first predicted... Hope all our neighbors to the north are as lucky as we were... Will keep watching the Weather Channel and saying a word of prayer for you all!!!!

Looking outside, it really is the calm before the storm! Mandatory evacuations all around us, but so far no call for this area, except for those folks who live in low-lying areas. We're about 17 feet above mean-low-water so if the storm drainage system works we shouldn't have any problem with flooding. The prediction for 35-50 MPH winds has me concerned, a lot of trees in the neighborhood. The folks living closer to the Chesapeake Bay will probably get hit harder, but we've got about a 10 mile buffer.

Prayers go out to all those affected by the approaching storm. Be safe!

Lew

Logging operations have ceased for today due to mill closing early for the storm. We have been working near kinston and on the way home I noticed alot more traffic in the west bound lanes than in the east ones. Walmart parking lot looked like Christmas Eve. All the cars were gone off Bud Rowe's car lot as if everyone had gotten their tax returns yesterday. The first bands of rain have started to come in now and the wind is increasing now from the east. Some numbers from the weather station- 84 deg barometer @29.80 the Vp is .95 and the DA is 3018. Back later with more.

Damaging winds from the hurricane expand out for more then 150 miles, I'd be heading more inland from where you are. Irene was 175 miles from our coast here and we still had 20 mph winds.

Very hard to find one here in CT-had to go to four stores before we found a neat light with 21 LED lbolbs-it can be used with either three AA batteries or plugged in.

Re: "Live" from the Hurricane Irene Nationals presented by R

It has been busy evening here as I have been trying to secure some things at our house on the river. It is secure for now but not sure how long it will stay that way. The last hour or so it has been getting really rough and the local weather man is saying the worst will not get here until early morning when the eye should pass just to our east. As Doyle was saying the water is rapidly rising and we are expecting 7 to 9 feet of storm surge which will most likely flood our downtown area. Danny I told all them people heading westbound to stop and say hello.lol

UPDATE- This just in, we are getting our balls kicked in! It has rained and blowed very hard for the last 4 hours and looks like by the radar about 3-4 more before the eye will pass over. We lost power about 2 hours ago but I still have phone service for now. Hold on tight everyone, more later hopefully.

Hope all of my NC friends are doing OK so far... looking at the weather channel, storm still have a very low pressure, and tons of rain and wind for "just a cat. 1". The WC just said eye shifted a little east maybe? As wide as the storm is, not sure it will help this late in game.
My inlaws are in Dunn, NC, will check on them in a couple of hours, if I can get in touch.
Prayers sent for all of you.
Wish we could have some of the rain out her in TX... critical drought, and you guys are getting flooded.
Ken

What up KEG?
Woke up this morning not raining. Very windy though. Looks like it moved just enough east for us not to get hammered. We had lots of rain last night though. May get some later but don't look like it. I know our friends in the Kinston-NewBern areas are getting slammed.

Freddie,
Don't have one but you know if I did you could get it ;).
I got a big Pine tree in the back yard leaning pretty bad. If it don't fall it's gonna have to go soon, at least it's opposite from the shop and house.

Re: "Live" from the Hurricane Irene Nationals presented by R

I thought we had seen the worst of it earlier but the last 2 hours have been brutal. Not sure how much rain we've had but it's alot, I'm sure its over 10 inches by now and have had 2 trees bite the dust in the yard. Talked to my father-in-law a little while ago, he lives on the Trent River side and the water had came up to the roof on his boat house. Only minor damage on our house so far and we're hoping things will start to calm down soon. Looking at the radar it appears they've had a tremendous amount of rain over near Danny and Mickey also.

Received a ton of rain here in Wake Forest and still coming down. Wind has gusted to mid 40,s. Lost a maple tree in backyard . Missed the race car trailer by only 4 ft. The guys down east were pounded and severe flooding. What's amazing is they're running @ Z-MAX today only 3 hrs away. 6 ??? rounds of qualifying in stock ?

Re: "Live" from the Hurricane Irene Nationals presented by R

Had chance to get out for a little look around and I have to say it is worse than I had expected. I started this thread as kind of a joke but I must say that there's nothing funny about it. We have seen lots of these before but this is as bad as some that were cat 2 we couldn't believe they were saying this is a 1. We still do not have power but as Mickey said thank God for generators. My understanding is that downtown is a mess and we were able to make it down to the river house and judging by the water marks in the garage we had 4-5 feet of water and we are the proud new owners of a rather large boat they came to rest in the yard. Everyone up north get ready she's a coming so be safe.

It's 6:40 PM in Old Bridge. We're getting some hard rain now,not much wind. There is a large tree limb hanging off my rear fence, damned if I know what tree it came off.We
put anything that could fly into the garage.I took my baby (the Dakota) out of the tent and parked it in the driveway with a cover and tarps over it.Put the Eagle wagon in the tent and secured the tent piping to the roof rack.Trailer generator on standby.Lastly, took down the flag and pole. Plenty of
flashlights and batteries.Best wishes to all in the path of this hurricane.

This is eerie. I live 2 blocks off the water (Newark Bay / Passaic River) in Bayonne, NJ. While coming home from helping my dad take important stuff our of his basement I passed Newark Airport.....not a single plane there.

Then I took a walk down to the waterfront park and the water was within a foot of the walkway. A 1,000 feet across the bay there is not a single container ship and all of the intermodal containers were stacked no more than two-high. Its the living version of that old saying: "The lights are on but nobody is home".

Re: "Live" from the Hurricane Irene Nationals presented by R

I hope all of you that have had it pass or are expecting it stay safe and get by with minimal damage. A portable generator will be your best friend for sure. When we had 2 hurricanes cross Florida back in 2004 we were without power for 7 days. We cooked our meals and showered in the motorhome, and had my work truck that has a Honda generator mounted over the cab parked by the front door of our house to power a few things inside.

Stay safe everyone! You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Hey Dan Moore, you're #1. :D
