Stocker to superstocker
What are some good combos that can run stock and then build a superstock motor and run superstock??Without a tub and a bigger tire. Not looking at a legal stocker to just run superstock but rather a stocker that if you want down the road can go to superstock with the same engine combo,in superstock trim Ie intake cam etc. Thanks for any input

Re: Stocker to superstocker
Do you have a brand preference? Most of the small and big Mopar Wedge stock combow
are capable of running well in SS on 9 inch tires. Examples: Steve Wanns' Cuda / Don Little's Challenger have both won class and are top qualifiers in SS. The small block 340 High/Low Comp. and 360 are much less flogged and dramatically less horsepower in SS. Whenever Stock is Full or Not Run..........I race my Stocker either 71 or 72 Combo in SS with NO changes other than weight adjustment and it alway runs at least a little under SS Index while in bracket mode..... obviously it is no match for a real dedicated SS Car but otherwise completive enough to race. I do not know about other Brands.....Probable Late F body is similiar? |
Re: Stocker to superstocker
Chev Buick, mustangs ,brand not the biggest concern. Was thinking of starting in stock and if i wanted to go faster change engine etc and go to superstock down the road. Not interested in the newer CJ"s or Mopars for $$$$reasons. Thanks

Re: Stocker to superstocker
78-83 Chevrolet Malibu. Still cheap to buy. You should be able to get by in the lower classes in SS on a small tire.

Re: Stocker to superstocker
any third or fourth gen F-body

Re: Stocker to superstocker
My vote would be the GM G-Body's. You have the Malibu's the Grand National and the Olds Cutlass. They are cheap and have ton's of bolt on parts that work.

Re: Stocker to superstocker
My Cutlass with just a bar & belts will run either stock or super stock IHRA . You would need to dig in the engine to make it run NHRA SS

Re: Stocker to superstocker
1st Gen Camaro with a well built 427 will fit both classes also a lot of front wheel drive cars will double up to.

Re: Stocker to superstocker
Kevin My 95 Trans Am can run both stock and Superstock the way it sits and is under both indexes.. The price is right . Mike

Re: Stocker to superstocker
'69 AMX 290 cu in 225 HP; ran it in M/S on 13.15 index, went 12.15, won two events.
Changed cam to .700 lift roller, massaged heads, Edelbrock "Torker" intake, "Quikfuel" 3310 Holley, 10.5" M/T's; run SS/M on 11.90 index, goes 10.60s in good air, won one event, so far. Almost always slowest car in eliminator, we leave first with very good driver. |

Re: Stocker to superstocker
'68-'70 AMC AMX 2-seat 97" wheelbase. Will run fast in Stock or Super Stock on 9" slicks with Calvert rear springs and bars. I went 10.50's in D/S with a 390 and loaded a "fair" SS 390 and a steeper rear gear. Went 10.00 in SS/H. The 290, 390 (either 1968-1969 or 1970 (different specs) and '70 360
will all under by a significant margin with the 290 as Roger mentioned probably the best to build (and cheapest). But you probably want a belly button car...:( |
Re: Stocker to superstocker
jeff, are you aware of any "approved" 290 pistons? 2bbl or 4bbl?
i'm not.... that's why i've got one (from ED F) that's gonna get sent in (to a mfgr) one of these days, probably this fall |
Re: Stocker to superstocker
Tom,
Check with Hemmy Adkins or Garrett Ghezzi (SS/MA from Joliet, IL) for NHRA piston. Dwight Southerland played around with one on a dyno also. |
Re: Stocker to superstocker
Hi Roger
Back in the late 70s and early 80s I ran a 69 AMX in NHRA Super Stock with a 390 engine. Not wanting to move the rear springs or alter the wheel tubs the only tire that would fit was a 9 in tire. I have thought about geting another AMX but I would not want to alter the rear of the car. What if any thing could be done to use a bigger tire with the stock length rear end and no alteration to the spring location and the wheel tubs? Thanks Allen |

that's why i asked about 290 pistons, afaik, i'm gonna be the one that's going to get 'em started...NOBODY to my knowledge is making an "NHRA accepted" piston... btw, they will be 4bbl pistons.... don't think there'll be much demand for 2bbl one's... btw, if anybody seriously wants to get the ball rolling before i get to it, contact me... |
Re: Stocker to superstocker
1968 Chevelle, 327 250/245 engine, Powerglide in Stock, 3 speed OK in Super Stock.Runs J,K&L in Stock, SS/KA and SS/LA in Super Stock. 10.5" tire in SS, un tubbed with right offset wheel. It's not a second under car, but far ehough under to be fun,and they are consistant.

Re: Stocker to superstocker
Allen,
Use 8" wide Bogarts w/4" backspacing and minor wheelwell "managulating" in the front and rear (which is legal) along with some "massaging" of the inner area of the whellwell, will allow you to use a 10.5 X 29.5 M/T slick. |
