Re: Our own Ed F. is famous
see this?
"Randall 401-XRRandall AMC dealership in Mesa, Arizona received AMC's endorsement to build 401 cu in (6.6 L)V8 powered Gremlins. The cars started out as 304 V8 models from the factory and after Randall's modifications would run 13.90's at 103-106 miles per hour (171 km/h) in the quarter mile, for $2,995. Known as the Randall 401-XR (X for Gremlin X, R for Randall), a total of twenty cars were built for the street and one for the strip during 1972, 1973, and 1974.[41] Car Craft magazine tested one with some modifications and achieved 115.07 miles per hour (185 km/h) in 12.22 seconds while still remaining a "totally streetable, daily-driver".[42]" i have the racer gremmy sitting here (storing it for a friend until he has room in his garage) |
Re: Our own Ed F. is famous
And as it was AMC endorsed, it should be legal on Stock, right Eddie?

Doug I'll still be the same old lovable fuzz ball I've always been.
Tom,those 401 KRs are far and few between now. There's no firm documentation from the factory and a lot of the paper work from Randall is gone. They all started out as 304 V-8 cars though. There are a few around that the owners claim at original cars. And for the price of the car you also got one way airfare to Mesa Az to pick up the caqr. And Tom please,it's not a gremmy. That' word is like someone scratching a chalk board. Bill they only made + or - 42 of them. And all were dealer constructed. Jack, they're hard to sell as 401 KRs without any documentation. They can always be done as a so called "tribute" car though. |

Re: Our own Ed F. is famous
LOL, I'll chime in on here since Ed is a huge fan of me....Hey Ed! I bet your Gremlin is not as modified as the front end of Jerry Emmons sheet metal on his AA/SA that was driven by that real super rich guys son in Fontana, Ca the weekend I took my Cadillac out there and raced it for the first time...It was the first time I ever took a new car out and did'nt make the final round...put that in Wikipedia....I got witnesses..I did judge the roll out correctly.. Had a -.016 on first pass..then backed way off to keep conservative..
Kind weird how I broke out and took 12 mph off while blurping three times and hitting the brakes twice... I took way too much strip...Anyways, anyone here familiar with that? ;) |

Re: Our own Ed F. is famous
My main AMC experience was when,in 1980,I took a job with Los Angeles County's Mechanical Department, where we serviced and repaired the vehicle fleet. The La Sheriff's Department had phased out their Matador black and whites, but we had a couple of plain color cars, one was a jade green 73 Matador, 401 with a 727 Torqueflite. It was a 4500 pound sleeper. That car on a wide open throttle leave from a stop light would bark the tires really loud on the second gear upshift. It felt like it could easily pin the speedometer, but that car's downfall was the size and weight in a uni-body. Upper control arms and front end pieces liked to break on these. On one of them, the upper bushing bolts had been rotating in the mounting holes until they cut through the inner fender stampings, and the front end collapsed .That engine and trans were begging to be put in something more deserving of it. Another weird find in the fleet were a pair of 77 Pontiac LeMans two door sedans with 403 Olds power. Wonder what class those fit, and wonder how many were built? Any Pontomobile fans out there??
