69 Camaro Eliminator

I was just watching Toby's video of the Stock semi-finals at Firebird.

First of all , no disrespect meant to those involved...Congrats to all.

It seems that NHRA, in their infinite wisdom and long term planning, have allowed the rules to evolve to the point that a 69 Camaro can run in virtually every class in Stock Eliminator.

So then, ....gone are most of the Novas, Chevelle SS's, Biscaynes, station wagons, 4 doors...In other words, a lot of the original variety built into the Stock classes.

Is this what you guys like to watch at this point in time ,or ??
Opinions, please...

I'll bet he did.
AA, A, B with the same 396 short block!

Or was it a 427 iron head?
Or 427 ZL 1 ?

Nah, I think it was a '68 ragtop, 350, 350 with cragar ss wheels and twin glass packs.
I think I saw him at A&W Root Beer one nite.

Mark
I'm not a big Camaro fan, but Kevin is. The car just fits a lot of classes and it works well. There's almost no engine Chevy built in 1969 that wasn't available in the Camaro, and only one that didn't come with an automatic transmission. It's just a real popular and real common car.

I'm a Chevelle man myself, I'll build a 69 Chevelle when I get in a better position financially.

Looks like only 4 to me, Bob

The car at the bottom never made a run ,but was still there working on it Monday.

No, it wasn't a 69. It was in fact a 67.

Mark...I agree....Certainly a 69 camaro is a really neat car....and one of my all time favorites....But there are way too many in stock and super stock for my liking....that was one of the reasons that we built a new style car(08 CJ).....it has the old style look but I can go to the dealer and get a brand new whatever......our car actually had 18k miles on it but was still like new when we took it apart....When we debut our new super stock drag pack this season, it will have transformed from a brand new body....something the old cars haven't had in a long time....the rest of the parts came from the dealer.....pretty nice....I was a classic car guy....but these new cars have changed my thoughts.....and added to the variety.....

Basic message is that its a very flexible car for a racer. Run any combo you like, any class you wish. AND change next year if you chose without starting over with another chassis.

Re: 69 Camaro Eliminator

Here's a little story about the new generation.

I had a 69 camaro BBC superstocker (just sold) and my 22 year old nephew loved it and thought it looked great and great sounding (he couldn't wait to drive it). Well I take him to Mike's (MPR) where we were dropping off the camaro to have some work done and sure enough there were the new Fords (with the hood open) and new Challenger's (Big's) sitting there being tricked out.

After one look at what could be done to those cars, then he could have cared less about my Camaro and wanted me to sell it for one of the new ones. I agreed with him

Re: 69 Camaro Eliminator

Last week at Bradenton, Brien Radley came up to me in the third round and told me there were 11 cars left, 1 station wagon, me, and the rest were Camaros. I lost, but I stuck better than any one of them.

So you don't have one Mark? ;) Probably the most versatle car in racing. They hold the value well also. Maybe we can run the Austrailian version for a different look. Too bad Buick or Olds didn't make one for their version like Pontiac...... I have to admit... There are a bunch of them.

Re: 69 Camaro Eliminator

i think the new cars have a long long way to go and a ton of wins yet before they dethrone the 69 camaro in drag racing.i have been at indy before when 60% of the feild was made up of red camaros....the new cars have a place and are neat cars ,but far from an icon like the 69,yet..

could be worse. It could be super comp, 160 "engines on a stick". I'd need a horn and a remote (like keyless entry) to figure out which one was mine in the lanes.

I'm with you, the 69 SS Chevelle is the favorite of mine, too. I think it was the best looking of all the MuscleCars (including those from Mopar, Ford and AMC), and it was one of the best handling, and fastest, too, depending on engine. I will eventually move to a Chevelle when I've run my course with the 442.

Re: 69 Camaro Eliminator

Well, I got hooked, Harry Vineyard had a nasty white 69 Chevelle 427-425 here, he drove it in B/SA, and they put a 4 speed in it, Tucker Parrish drove it in A/S. It may be my favorite race car of all time. When he sold it, he told my I should buy it. He was right. I let a killer car at a good price get away.

That green car of Kevin Borgstrom's is a killer, too. Not too often you see a B/SA 69 Chevelle win in Super Stock running SS/EA.
