Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.

That's got to be an expensive facility to operate. I hope they can generate enough to turn a profit. It would be sad to see it go under again.

I don't understand the I won't run IHRA deal. The people are friendly and they want you to be there. When I broke in Dallas last year Frank came and found me to give me a refund. He said hope to see you at the next one hope this money helps getting it back together. When I broke in Houston a few years ago they said have a nice trip home. LOL Ed

Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
From a local bracket racer/fan perspective, the most disappointing things about IHRA are no Comp Eliminator, no Pro Stock, and low car counts in Stock/Super Stock.
Other than that, I see not downsides of IHRA racing. The only reason I never attended any of there event previously is the lack of Comp Eliminator racing. Thats a huge reason why I love racing, selected engineering as a major, and want to get into racing. |
Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
I'm in. Memphis is a great facility and I think it will thrive as an IHRA track. I used to run a lot of IHRA until they virtually moved out of this region. Hopefully this will will bring other IHRA events back to the TN, KY, AR, LA, GA region. How about a points race at US43? Great track and it used to draw a big car count. Maybe a points race at US43 followed by a national event in Memphis? Cool; 3 races in back-to-back weekends! HHMMM.

I keep hearing good things about IHRA and their member tracks...I might have to go down to Middle Tennessee dragway some Saturday night I'm not racing at Beech Bend and check it out.

Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
Haley,
IHRA has a awesome bracket program. I won the track championship at Rockingham this year. I then won the division 9 runoff which let me go to the World finals for an 8 car shootout for the World Championship. I won that too. I got: Turn Key Miller dragster Gold and Silver cards $11,000 Ring $800 gift certificate from Simpson Fire Jacket from Summit If you can find a IHRA track near you and want to bracket race It's an AWESOME deal Chip Johnson |
Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
I live in the heart of DIV 1 NHRA and still run IHRA because it is a great time all around. Everyone talks about large car counts, I ran NHRA DIV 1 events this year and the racers and people are great, but it is 10 pounds of sh#@ in a five pound bag. IHRA has 2 races per weekend. A 5 round race in one day is better then compared to a 7 round race over three days, just my .02.

And most important...IHRA prohibits yellow caution tape...(DIV1 home of the yellow caution tape) LOL.

Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
Hopefully my car will be finished in time to race at Memphis. The track is 800 miles from my shop but I'm going to support IHRA and this track if there is any way possible. The racers can turn this into a very important moment in Class Racing history if they will just give these folks a chance.

Bruce,
I'm not there yet but trying to get this darn car finished by spring. Next week should be fun. |
Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
I will be there also. Andrew will be if he's not in school. Memphis use to be my home track and I always liked to race there.

Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
The true test for IHRA at Memphis will be whether they run a divisional race on 1/8th or 1/4 mile. If it is 1/8th, then they can stuff it.

Ed your right, It will cut participation in half. The reason they do it is its cheaper for Ins. for the 1/8.

Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
Montgomery was 1/4-mile last year... and most of y'all didn't show up.
Kinda tired of the fairweather "If they would just blahblahblah, I'd go" stuff. Come race, hang out, and have a great time. It's really pretty easy. |
Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
I drove 600 miles to Montgomery last year. Where were the Locals?
I also drove to Steels the last year we were there. If you don't show up don't b1tch when they shut the gates for good. Ask the div 5 guys. Chip |
Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
We went to Montgomery last year...and had three friends that had either got new IHRA memberships, or were getting them at the track, on Sunday. Well, we had a few problems, and needed Saturday night to get them sorted out when IHRA changed the race to a Saturday 2 race event.
We pulled the plug...tried to call our friends...got hold of 2. Left before the second race finished. But in IHRA's defense it is their ball field, ball and rules. They can change any of them in the middle if they wish. If you don't want to play then go home, or don't bother showing up. |
Re: Looks like Memphis is going to be IHRA for 2011.
If you have an IHRA track close to you there is no reason not to attend if you have time in your schedule. These guys are committed to providing a great sportsman atmosphere.
At National events they give the little guy sportsman classes the whole day on Saturday and Sunday (No mixing of alcohol classes, top fuel, Pro-Mod or any other professional classes in with sportsman qualifying). At every IHRA National Event I have attended, they have pitted me about 1/2 to 1 city block form the staging lanes and feature stock and superstock during eliminations. The press coverage is great - hey for non-touring pros, it is kind of cool to get some press for your efforts. You cannot expect high car counts at an event if you do not attend. I love the comment "We will see how the car counts go before deciding to attend"? That's like saying we'll see who wins the election before we vote? I would to thank IHRA for putting together a division 6. They have put together ten tracks that are one hell of a long way apart - but they had to start somewhere so we need to patronize these tracks if we are to keep Drag Racing alive out west. I carry cards for both sanctioning bodies and will continue to support both although IHRA is my favorite! I would encourage all no box bracket racers to take a hard look at building an IHRA crate motor stocker, this is an affordable way to build a killer stock eliminator car on a budget using modern parts - some of the no box cars I have seen at National events are pretty close to meeting the rules shy of the motor. The crate motor class does not mean you have to buy a crate motor (common misconception). Rather, the rules specify certain components that must be used, heads, intake, carb, cam, etc. just like a traditional stocker. We need to see more 9" and 10" tire, roller rocker, foot brake cars to come out and play!! Keep up the good work IHRA, we appreciate you guys out west. |
