Staging beam and starting line ?????

Does anyone know the specs for the staging beams?

Height of beams

Width of beams = Rollout

Distance ffrom the beams to the tree.

Jeff Foster is on this site on occasion he has all that info. I suspect he will post that info when he reads this

How about rollout?I'll bet ya it isn't consistent track to track.Just saying.

Re: Staging beam and starting line ?????

Light Beam Placement:
-distance between pre-stage beam and stage beam 7"
-distance between stage beam and gaurd beam 16"
-height of 60' beam 10-10.5"
-height of interval beams, speed trap beams and ET stop beam -all 5-6"

Roll Out - height of beam adjusted as necessary (and possible) to provide 11.5-12" of roll using standard dragster wheel/tire.(22" diam.)
*note , an 11.5" rollout equal on both lanes may not be possible due to track crown. The single most important thing with rollout is that both lanes be as equal as possible.

This info was from a 2004 NHRA Competition Policies & Procedures Manual.

Hope this helps

Re: Staging beam and starting line ?????

as for the tree
-distance from start line to tree: 38-40'
-height of tree :90" from ground to center of pre-stage bulb.

I'm surprised that they haven't raised the tree from90" to 150" so the guys with those beluga whale scoops can see the tree in the left lane.

If there is a standard location for the tree in relation to the starting line, why does it seem that I seem to have move my blinder at some tracks to make it line up correctly? Maybe gravity changes....

Tracks are of different widths. Even tracks that measure the same wdith may have the groove in different locations.

Last Saturday, our track mgr called me up to the starting line while he was checking rollout. He uses a wooden wheel with a stand that he uses to measure rollout. Our's is 11.125-11.25.....for now.

We have changed the height of the tree to 95" from ground to center of pre stage bulb about 3 years ago. Also guard beam was changed to 13.5 inches 3 years ago.

Is there a fixed # for roll out?

Re: Staging beam and starting line ?????

Another noteworthy point is the beam itself. The beam is about 1/4" wide, and the beam is two inches up off the track when measuring to the top of the beam. It's the staging beam height that determines the rollout.

I've seen good racers confuse the pre-stage beam as part of the rollout equation...it's not. The prestage beam is there for location purpose only...to let you know you are within inches of the stage beam.

It's a valuable lesson to take a tire to the starting line and roll it into the beam...and to see how small a distance that last 1/4" is from not staged to staged. It makes you realize how carefully you must move those last few bumps in if you are going to cut consistent lights.
