Live @ VMP, IHRA

Got parked around 3:30today. Then the rains came. Was nice and sunny when i got here . I don't have a camera ,so no pics. Maybe Michael Beard will take some and help out on this thread. Lots of cars rolling in now.I know Michael Lyons is here cause he was in front of me in line to get in.Larry Cummings , Rob Moser, Bob Phillips ,and lots more .Raining now and went in the motorhome to dry up and wait for it to stop raining. will shout back later if anybody is interested.....I get to run my stocker this weekend instead of working. That should be fun. Sat and Sun is supposed to be perfect drag racing weather. Temps are not to go over 70 all weekend .Be back later.

Yay! It's clearing up!

Forecast looks good for tomorrow, fast, but more than likely a pretty bad headwind.

Got up at 4am, got things around and took the wife in for gall bladder surgery. Everything went fine, but they'll keep her overnight. Her mom and aunt came down to stay with her while she issued my orders: "GO WIN!". Rolled in a little after 6pm. Saw Jeff Ross towing the Cuda on a rollback, with an enclosed trailer behind it. Gotta be a pain to unload, but ya gotta dowhat ya gotta do! Saw Steve Klacik's Stocker. Changed collectors on the Volare, as one blew out en route to a $10' Footbrake R/U the other week. Trying something different. Should be interesting. Finally got a bite, and filled out 3 tech cards, and ready to hit the hay. Thanks to Scott Macy for changing out my worn out idler arm and making my requested collector "adjustments". More as I have time tomorrow. Good line still coming in at 9PM. Air's decent (1100') desipte a bad Baro. They were out with the jet tonight, being proactive with the track. Exhausted. Night!

They just called Hot Rod, so here we go!

Checked the air about 1/2 an hour ago, negative 9 feet! 29.55 barometer, but a definite head wind. They said maybe three time runs, which would be wonderful.....FINGERS CROSSED we all have our cars together well and no oil downs, and we should get three.

Ok, so just as I was getting the car ready to go up, it started sprinkling a bit. So we are waiting......it's very chilly so it won't just dry up, even with the stiff wind.

Re: Live @ VMP, IHRA

Just announced to go back to the trailers and put them away for a little while, as there is a line of weather coming. But once that passes we should be good. I have to give them kudos - they are announcing that they didn't want to try and squeeze a class in before the rain as the conditions will be quite different when we run the finals - thank you IHRA!

Just pulled the plug on today. Rain keeps popping up, and it's just too cold to get a safe racing surface. 9 am start tomorrow.

They cancelled the rest of the program for today and tonite ? Its cool out here today, was looking to come down to VMP tonite, to take 3 guys I work with that have never been to a drag race. DRC doesnt show anything about whole thing.

Beth Denysenko 10-15-2010 05:11 PM

Re: Live @ VMP, IHRA

When they made the announcement they were going to cancel the evening's events, the initial plan was to start tomorrow at 9 am with NITRO JAM qualifying round one, followed by TOC round two/final qualifier, and then ??? But they also said they would be finalizing plans and issuing a printed schedule for tomorrow in the next hour or so. Haven't got it yet but when we do I or someone else here will post it.

Ironically, the sun is out and it's warmer now than it's been all day. That being said, they made the right decision. There may be more rain and it's too cold to get the track safe and sticky enough.

Re: Live @ VMP, IHRA

Welcome to Atco, er, VMP! The weather forecasters have done their standard issue for this event. Two days ago, said clear all three days. Yesterday, changed to 30% chance Fri night after 6pm, so of course it rained at Noon. Track was a little iffy for some this morning, even felt like I turned a tire a little on the bias plys. Some, like John Brimer, however, had no problem and went sky high. As posted previously, they had the jet out last night working on the track, and they did some massive prep this morning, with rosin the width of each lane, both well before and after the starting line. Starting line looked real black, like at Belle Rose this summer. But looked like it wasn't sticking to itself (See Beth's pics). Never seen that look at an IHRA event. Then the rain came, and tomorrow may be more challenging.

I tried a 5" long collector, 3" to 2-1/2", and it was fine the front half of the track, but didn't make power from 400' on. Gonna try no collector tomorrow for kicks tomorrow. May kill some bottom end, which might not be a bad thing...

The right call was made, as it would've been 3 hrs to dry n prep, and by that time it'd get cold and dewy. It's a shame that the rain hit when it did. Behind the 8 ball now! But we'll do our best.

It seems to me this happens almost every year. Maybe the NHRA and IHRA should try to get these final races finished not later than September from now on?????? Same deal for the "Dutch"?

Re: Live @ VMP, IHRA

It's sunny, chilly and breezy - and no rain in the forecast for the next two days! Getting ready to warm up the car and run round 1 of the Nitro Jam event in 45 min.

A couple of observations regarding IHRA leadership:
I have been to multiple NHRA and IHRA nationals. I have seen Tom Compton and his entourage about four times. Total. I have already seen IHRA upper management all over the place here, this weekend alone. Very hands on and I like that.

Number two, and probably most frustrating. Last weekend at the NHRA Indy Fall Classic, not ONCE - and that includes time spent with Tony in the WINNER'S CIRCLE - not once did I see our division director Jay Hullinger. He couldn't even take two minutes away from his throne in the ivory tower to come down and be in a picture with his class winners. We did however have our photo taken with the track manager, a very nice young man. And Ritch Bowers (who really SHOULD be our director as he acts more like one than Jay) was everywhere doing Jay's job. Thank goodness for Ritch.

Here at VMP, I have seen our division director, Jon O'Neal literally everywhere. He is working his rear end off, and at the end of the day he took an hour out of his schedule as things were winding down to sit down and talk to Alex and myself about what we could do and IHRA could do to work on getting more tracks and more racers. He really wants to grow, as do we want IHRA to grow, and he took the time to seek out some suggestions from racers.

Wow - now how's that for truly racer friendly!! So if you see Jon and you have a good (and FEASIBLE!) suggestion, talk to him - he is interested!

Ok, time to warm up! :D

Do you really need to run down NHRA to say good things about IHRA?
Cant IHRA stand on its own as Good racing body ?
I just dont get it they both do stupid things and they both do great things
The NHRA bashing on here sure does get old......
