Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
How about the best truck trailer combination, ramp truck, box truck, any type of combination of truck trailer you've had in the past to now. I know that nobody can beat drag racing ingenuity for transporting cars to the race track. I can remember Chuck Rayburn going across America in his blue Ford diesel pick up and open trailer in his Champinship year, Toby Lang in his Ramp truck with his trailer on the back, all great set-up. The Armstrong Brothers always had great haulers an MCI Bus and a GMC Astro tractor with living quarters and box.

Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
The craziest thing I ever saw was in Division 7...at Pomona in 2006...a guy had converted a U-Haul truck into a car hauler. It had a small lounge with a hoist mounted on the back and an orange stocker on the bottom and an orange SS car on top...both stick cars I think...Cudas I believe....Incredible....I have a picture somewhere....

Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
Interesting photo.
It almost looks like a 4 post lift welded to that truck frame. Slick setup. My concern would be the car up on top moving around during transport. I wonder if anyone has ever made one of those school bus conversions look cool ? |

Circa 1974, this is what I built to take my Nova to E-town and NY National. It was a old 1956 2-ton Coca-Cola truck I bought from the bottler in Bethlehem, PA and had Grubb Brothers Automotive in Hellertown weld the center section of an old car hauler to it. I moved to Florida about 2 years later and installed a 396/360 in it to replace the terrible 6 that kept eating distributors at an alarming rate. Shoulda kept it, but it was tough finding a place I could park! Can't keep 'em all!:D

No secret I am kinda partial to these dinosaurs:

Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
Rory,
If I remember right it had something like 19.5 one-piece rims and used the same tires the U-haul vans used. It had a 6-something (mountain gear) one speed rear axle, which was fun with the big-block, but ran out of rpm's rather quickly! 56 MPH all-out :)! Lew |

Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
There's a lot of neat stuff out there, but one that's somewhat different approach is Bob and Craig Marshall's crewcab Navistar pulling a 5th wheel trailer with two cars bumper to nose. I think it has a lounge in front too.

Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
One of the more interesting rigs I have ever seen was. Alan Armstrongs rig He had a grey hound bus he had converted to a hauler with sleeping quarters at the front. The interesting part was the side of the bus opened up, they swung an engine crane looking thing out the side and hooked on to an Eyelet that was screwed into the front of the roll cage. Lifted the car up and swung in into the bus.. He at the national even t sanair, Cruz pedregon stoped his crew on the way back from a run so he could watch them do it.
Hell now they have Motorhomes that you could put a race car under the chassis.. http://www.worldcarfans.com/10902051...ar/lowphotos#0 |
Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
Steve the first time I saw both Armstrongs rigs at Sanair I was quite taken by the ingenuity of both brothers. I'm trying to find some pics of his MCI bus, but since my computer crashed I've been having problem retrieving some of the old pictures. Ed you could always run the jeep in Super Stock it would be a match for your Stocker. Claude

Kevin that is a very beautiful truck. Here's how some of the pro's in the 70's hauled their cars.

Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
Here you go, this truck was originally Arlen Vanke's truck Chysler had made for him, then Jeg's bought it from him, then we bought it from Jeg's now its sitting in a farm field outside of Mansfield rotting away.
The hauler with the Nova is how we first got around, my brothers and myself rode in this nova all over the country touring AHRA & IHRA events in the 70's |

Here's one from the York Reunion - Bill Jenkins' Oleynik-bodied hauler sitting in the car show area. It's for sale, but I'm sure the asking price is way up there, given the Jenkins' connection. In the day this was "top-of-the line"!

Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
Wow, those are some great photos. I love the U-haul conversion, especially the fact that he kept the U-haul colors and even has "Mom's Attic" still on it! I used to daydream about building a similar one from a 26' U-haul, but leaving the garage area enclosed. I figured on building some ramps to keep the nose of the car up for clearance while loading, and storing stuff like spare motor & trans underneath.
Does anyone remember the school bus conversion used by "Horrible Herb" on the West Coast in the 1980's? He had an Opel GT S/G car, and the conversion had an open rear area (similar to the U-haul above minus the lift), and the rest of the bus was living quarters, but still painted as a school bus. I remember in the later 80's we had a pit vote for the ugliest tow rig (mostly confined to Super-Gas, we were bored waiting for our turn at a national event). In the running was my truck (primer-nose 1973 Blazer), Kris LaPoint's ramp truck, Ted Seipel's ramp truck, Don Elgin's ramp truck, and Horrible Herb's bus. I think Herb won, but I got an honorable (dishonorable?) mention. |
