Gawd , that's painful to read. Public schools, no doubt.
I don't remember the car.

Re: Any history on this car?

This 1964 Comet's less than 50 miles from me, closer to Boston, and was raced during same time frame as I did, but I don't remember ever seeing this car run down the track even once....either at Orange, Ma., Sanford, Me., Ct. Dragway, Lebanon Valley, or the early days of New England Dragway.....Maybe someone else from here in New England area will recognize and comment on this piece, and in the meantime I'll forward the ebay pics to someone who might remember the car, as well... BTW, the person responsible for writing this ebay description won't be a threat to win any National Spelling Bees in the near future, wow......WJ

Could be the stickers were just added for window dressing.I have a Connecting Highway win sticker on my 1985 AMC Eagle s/w.It ain't Back to the Future you know.
Looks like a cool car though.

Re: Any history on this car?

Talked w/a couple of friends today that raced back then at each of mentioned tracks and neither remember this Comet....sent out couple of more emails today to more people that competed in that time frame and those tracks for info or knowledge of this car.....will get to the bottom of it....Anyone here get a memory flash and recognize this car? WJ

Thanks for the interest. I am a member of IMOA (International Mercury Owners Assoc) and I keep an eye on nearly all Drag racing Mercs. This one I had never seen in any mag or had heard about. I question the validity of some if they are just trying to make a quick buck.

I know from watching here most of you have seen most of the cars that have ever gone down a track and I believe I can trust most of you.

427 and a straight axle would be a real thrill ride for sure.

The style of the description almost makes me believe it to be a scammer who lifted some pictures off the Net somewhere. Anyone try the phone number?

Correct me if I am wrong, but are the carbs on backwards?

The phone is a cell in Lynn, MA according to whitepages.com

Re: Any history on this car?

The person who's listed this '64 Comet has a great ebay rating....check his ebay transactions......a ton and all positive.....would like to see some pics of underneath car....it might tell a story of being legit, or not..... all those win stickers are from Epping.....hard to believe a couple of old friends I spoke with about this Comet who are heavy-duty Ford people, but cannot remember it as well. Still working on it.... WJ

427 Fords with two four barrell carbs were installed backwards for distributor clearance. They used the 4160 style carb without the metering block which give more clearance when turned around.

Re: Any history on this car?

Roland,
Thanks, while I have studied the FE, I have ignored the 427, mainly because I knew I was running the auto and not a stick. That is one thing I had not come across.

It does add some more cred to the car though.

Here is a pic of my Dad's 64 Mercury Comet.
This was a 427 4-speed.
I remember dad telling me alot of story's about this car.
If I remember correctly there were only 25-50 of these car's built.
This car came factory with slicks, open headers, roll bar, tach ready to race.
He said it had really long slapper bar's and when you banged the gears it would feel like the floor board was coming apart.
This pic was taken at the Danville IL. Airport,The reason there was mud on the tires is Dad ran it off the end of the runway.

Great pic of a old piece of great history, Monte. Drag Comets were rare, for sure...The one on ebay right now could easily be legit....might have some answers today.......WJ

WJ - I put a link to the car on www.northeastdragracing.com. Maybe someone over there knows something about it. Perhaps Don Roberts or Todd Berube know the car.

Great, I'm going to email Ralph Ridgeway (Deb's Dyno '55 Chev) up around Springfield, as well.....Those were his C/MP heydays at those tracks and more....The one thing that puzzles me a little are all the New England Dragway win stickers posted w/pics of that Comet.....a car w/that many wins in those days HAD to get some notice and attention. We'll see... WJ

The small lettering on the quarter windows reads " 'x.x.x.x.' Record Holder "

Re: Any history on this car?

Not one early 60's thru early 70's former or current racer that I have spoken with remembers this car going down any of the still operating or now-closed New England area tracks mentioned in the ebay auction info ad....anyone know for sure if this car and its history is legit? W/all those Epping win stickers, one would think it would've had to be a "regular" up there....ebay item #190418297712....auction ends tonight.....WJ

Re: Any history on this car?

W J,

Thanks. It looks like the people bidding think it is the real thing. I never would have guessed it going to 20K, but it hasn't even met reserve yet. It is going to be interesting to watch.

Re: Any history on this car?

Car did not sell(meet reserve), but interesting to note was that late in the auction after the bidding slowed a "buy it now" for 26K was posted. Apparently no one decided to use it.

Re: Any history on this car?

Has there been any more info on this car? I wonder how to prove that it's legit. The price seems reasonable. A "W" code 427 '67 Fairlane conv, former record holder, listed in HMN just sold...first day for first class subscribers.

Looks like the car is back around again, this time with more info.

The questions to the owner looks like a typical political press conference transcript. Not a bit of information is revealed.Sounds like a page on facebook or a string of H.S. girl text messages.

Yeah, notice how he glossed over the National Record thing?
I'll bet the guys on the HAMB Junior Stock thread could dig that up in half a day, if it were true.

As I recall there were 11 built....10 coupes and one station wagon (Dyno Dons "Ugly Duckling"). Im sure some were "home built" during the year. They did NOT come with roll bars as they were not requird by NHRA in 1964 when new for A/FX. NHRA rules made a roll bar required for 1965 in A/FX. The traction bars were welded to the rear housing like the 64 T-Bolts. They were not adjustable with just a pivot point at the forward crossmember mount. All were 4 speeds. Dyno Don;s and Ronnie Sox were the most notable ones back in the day.
