Have i created a monster

My buddy billy blanton bought a jr dragster and he wanted my boy to drive it,he has never sat in one before{hes 10 years old}.we took him to orlando friday night after a couple driveway blasts.i told him 1 time how to stage and he pre staged and bumped in like a pro,had a 113 light(not great but its a slow jr) and he's had good lights on his first few passes.we were told it ran 45-48 mph,but it ran 61 mph on the first hit..when he was little he always wanted one of those paper wrist bands that i got at divisionals so i would cut mine off and tape them back on him, well sunday he got his own at central florida racing complex along with a semi final medal,he wont let me take that dirty wristband off of him

My Mom would tell anyone who asked she never had to worry about where Dad or I was. If he was not at work he was at home with her OR in the garage working on the car. Like my dad said there are alot worse habits than this!!! LOL. Good job Scott with your boy, I was the same way....Nothing wrong with that. have fun.

Thanks robert
we took my 15 year old daughter to orlando sunday with the jr.(she has been begging us to let her drive)she was a little more nervous than my boy but after the first pass she had 3 lights between .040 and .072 .when we got home she posted on facebook that she found her first true love and that she now understands her dads dedication to this sport
thanks for the replies

To answer the question you asked in the title: Yes, you have. As a former Jr. Dragster Racer, I'll tell you that there is no other experience like as a kid behind the wheel of your own car, you're independent, you're floating on cloud nine everytime you strap in. I've been racing for 15 years now. I'm 23 if that gives you an idea for when I first experienced and got addicted to alcohol-fueled adrenaline rushes. I haven't raced an alcohol entry since I was 17, though.

The seasons I raced when I was 16 and 17, I raced 2 entries: one in Jr/D and the other in High School, Street, the progressively up to Sportsman. I'm taking this season (and maybe next) off concentrating on building an entry for class racing. I race a Miata, and I recently found out that Stock and Super Stock are not an option as Mazda isn't even listed as any type of valid combo. I'm still waiting to find out if it would be OK in Comp Elim. If not, I'd have to settle for S/C, S/G, or S/ST - depending what I put in it.

I'm torn between stroking out the stock 1.8L to a 2.0 and turbocharging with 15-20lbs of boost, or dropping in an LSx-engine. Of course, I wouldn't even bother with it if I could talk my Mom out of her Grand National, but that won't happen anytime soon (if ever).

Didn't mean to hi-jack, but I think you get my point of what kind of a monster my parents created on that fateful day back in 1995. You have just spawned your own. Congratulations!

Re: Have i created a monster

You should take him to some of the big Jr. events in Reynolds, GA. That'll blow his mind. The track is awesome there. And Ed (the owner there) is a great guy and loves taking care of his racers.

My kid cut like an 00x lite one day. He said he left on the second yellow. They leave really slow...We ran one for a few years.

Re: Have i created a monster

SDR was my hometrack. I'm from Reynolds (I now live in Houston, TX). They have the Fall Brawl there and the Jr. Challenge. I know they used to run the Gritz Blitz and the Div. 2 Jr. Finals there after the Jr. Class had a falling out with the owner of US 19 Dragway. Don't worry about him driving a slow Jr. either, it'll work to your advantage. I remember racing there in the 13+ catagory in the later part of my Jr. career. We never had a fast car. We were poor racers. We brought our car in on an open trailer and raced the big-money 7.90 and 8.90 boys with a car running 12.50s. Those 8 and 9 second guys didn't know how to bracket race. They didn't know how to wait at the light for their tree to come down. I went four rounds before one didn't just give the race to me off the tree. One of the guys I beat came in with 1 car for the 7.90 index race, 1 car for the bracket race, and 1 car for the 330 outlaw race (all for the same driver) all carried by a rig similar to that that carries Top Fuel cars and their crew. I also put one of the renowned Shipp siblings on the trailer in that eliminator too. Running fast is fun, but I'd rather have a slow, consistant car any day of the week (and God's blessing of the poor and a little luck).:).

I agree with that!!

Re: Have i created a monster

And by the way, I had more fun watching him race than when I was racing myself. The first time we ran the car we ran out of fuel on the starting line. Oops.

We took my whole rig to cfrc in taft last weekend.its an ihra track and,my daughter raced the jr for the first time in eliminations shes 15 yrs old and she was killing the tree.she beat their points leader to win the race!!and my poor car was parked next to the trailer and never raced, and it didnt bother me a bit.....twenty years ago if that car was within 50 miles of a race track the only way i wasnt racing was if the rods were hanging out of the pan ha ha

I bought my kid a junior last summer. First weekend he blew up two motors. Next weekend he went a couple rounds and had a ball.
Does this look like a kid enjoying himself?

Re: Have i created a monster

Yeah he's 10 and loves using a skateboard like a creeper under the mustang..."I'm working on your racecar Dad"...

My 14 yo though, is 6'2 185 and likes sports (basketball/soccer/hockey) and has zero interest in cars. Still working on him though, I'll give him his first car at a dragstrip, maybe THAT will hook him? Can't have it until he makes a pass? hehehe

Where were these when I was a kid??? (oh yeah, we had dune buggies and old trucks to drive in the field)

Re: Have i created a monster

I bought my grandson David, Chris's (Drooze) oldest boy, a Jr Dragster a couple of years ago when he was 12.

He is the poster child for ADD, so we didnt have great hopes about winning a lot, we just wanted to see him have some fun.

After the first time down the track, when he almost ran over Chris, and just missed hitting him with the wing, he got the bug.

After that first time, every other time he got into the car, he was locked in, and cut some awesome lights.

He was perfectly happy with the car, winning some, losing a lot more to faster cars, until he got beat by a 13 year old girl...

And that is when we had to get a new Blockzilla, new clutch, up the cam, and give him some more steam.

He outgrew it, and it is now off to a new home...

So now he reminds me that he is only a year and a half from getting a driver's license, so who knows what he will driving in the future...

It is a great sport, and good for for the whole family.

David
