Calvert?
He is not on the final qualifying sheet in stock at the Div.7 race in Tucson.

Re: Calvert?
He's at the bottom of the list on the Final list on DRC.

Re: Calvert?
Two cars, son made grade point in stock with T-bolt then John switched it to SS, I think he set the SS/G record and did not want to put it back together at the track.

Re: Calvert?
Bob Pagano I have a couple of questions that I hope u can answer. If not I'll call John on Monday or Tuesday.
1st: Are you saying they entered the fairlane in stock with his son as the driver and received his grade point after teching in and not making a pass and then they switched the Fairlane to Super Stock? 2nd question: How do they let you transfer a single car from Stock that they just received a grade point for into Super Stock. Did John have to pay a second entry or did they let them transfer it with the same tech card? Just curious as I will be at my first divisional in super stock next month and was wondering if I can switch my tech card to Super Street if for some odd reason they don't pass me in tech as a Super Stock entry. |
Re: Calvert?
Maybe the T-Bolt in stock and the old car in SS/G ?

Re: Calvert?
Now that John is out and as an old tech guy I have to ask, how was this ever allowed? Not that it really matters other than several rules were broken when this change was allowed. A-A replacement vehicle change plus a driver change is NOT permitted.. B-Replacement vehicle cannot have been utilized by any other contestant at the same event. C-Driver must stay within original eliminator category and class entered.
Its also stated the "spirit" of allowing changes is for "unforeseen circumstances...I.E., medical problem, personal tragedy,etc.". Don't see how setting a record and not wanting to put the car back together fits. I posted this last night but deleted it not wanting to have someone at the race read it and complain and get John bounced. I know the changes really didn't cause any problems other than changing the SS ladder since one more car was added assuming John did not get the stang back together. But why devote a page in the rulebook (2.3-2.4) spelling out driver/vehicle changes if they are not followed. |

Re: Calvert?
Sorry, but just because you say "end of story" doesn't make it so. If your telling me that the son is also John Calvert and he was the one driving the Tbolt that showed up on the Stock Q listing then there is still the issue of him changing to SS or the Car being changed to SS with senior driving. If the same John Calvert drove the mustang and the Tbolt, somewhere during the day the mustang was replaced on the SS Q sheet with the Tbolt which makes it a replacement vehicle. Maybe you can explain to me how you can run one vehicle, replace it with a second vehicle and the second vehicle not be a replacement vehicle. If John senior drove the Mustang and Tbolt in SS my previous questions are still valid.
Not busting on John, my guess is he went to NHRA and requested the switch and it was approved. He likely didn't even known it was not a legal move (if my rules readings are correct). My question is why have the rules if they are not going to be enforced. If this is, in fact, a legal move its just something to store away for possible future reference. Did it make a difference? I don't know. It did chance both ladders so it is possible it did. |
Re: Calvert?
I am pretty sure his boy's name is John.
|
Re: Calvert?
Stewart, Its very simple to explain: Its the west coast rule book. Or as some racers refer to the rule book as " The Left Coast Suggestion Manual. '' I really like the wheely bars on the T-Bolt but Tech says I cant run them in Div 3.

Re: Calvert?
John's son is also named John....His son was definitely driving in stock....I raced him in time trials , it was his first race and he did well driving the car. John Calvert is one of the most honest and fair racers I have ever met in te last 20 years. Anything that was done at the race was certainly done by direct request to Mike Rice the Division Director! There was plenty of time at the race to have anyone approach either of these gentleman...they were easy to find. Everyone who raced Stock/SS was aware of the Ladder Changes and guess what: we all could of cared less! For anything that happens at a Div.7 race, the Division Director has the final say. I am sure Mike Rice would be happy to explain the circumstances to you if you call. He has been always easy for me to contact. As a racer I don't get paid to interpret the rules, so If I have a question on what we can or can not do.....I ask the Division Director and what he says GOES. John Irving

Re: Calvert?
I talked to John and this is what he told me. After the record run, with the cobra jet the next pass the car started to slow down.after checking the oil filter and finding bad things he with drew from super stock. His son told him to run the thunder bolt. His son with drew from stock sat. A.M. John re entered super stock with the thunder bolt and made a qualifying run sat. afternoon. This all went through MIKE RICE div.7 dir.

Some stuff can be cleared up with an e mail not the court of public opinion. I don't know Calvert personally, but I am pretty sure he is easy to get ahold of if you really want to know something. Not defending NHRA's process for their other problems at the top, but it doesn't appear as if there was a conspiracy theory in this case. |
Re: Calvert?
Its people nature to bitch about this stuff on the internet as its easier than finding out the real truth.
As for the whellie bars, why not get a picture of that one and send it to everyone either you get yours or his gets taken away. Herb Jr |
Re: Calvert?
Wheelie Bars need to be addressed, if Bruce approved them why are they not legal in div 3? There are a bunch of cars using them so whats the deal, I have not seen any announcement saying they are not legal.

Here are some pictures of the Fairlane at Pomona. I wish I had a better shot of how the bars are attached, but they float on their mountings and look to act as a lever and push down on the axle.

Re: Calvert?
The whellie bar situation wiill be addressed soon, I am told, according to a reliable source.

Re: Calvert?
Took John Irvings advice and called Mike Rice but have not heard back. I also called John Calvert. I started by apologizing for even questioning the car swap. Told John I hoped he got no negative feedback about this and I guessed next time I would not bother questioning when I felt something didn't seem right. We talked for over 1/2 hour on that topic and 4-speeds to Cobra Jets to Clutchless transmissions. Without me asking John said I could post any part of our discussion but all I will say is he is a true gentleman and he did exactly what I would have done and exactly what he should have done. He went to the event director and asked if he could make the swap. He was told yes and hopes that the right call was made. John was concerned that some might think he pulled a fast one but I am sure after talking to him his intent was just to race but only if it was a correct call and he was told it was.

Re: Calvert?
I agree 100%,John Calvert is a great guy and a honest racer.
|
Re: Calvert?
Don't know if anyone cares but I got an email back from Mike Rice and he wrote "I made a mistake in allowing it to happen. Call it what you want, but that is the bottom line.". Now as Mr. Kelley would say, that is the "end of story". At least for me.

Re: Calvert?
