Tough Night Updated

Well after supper I decided to pick up a friend of mine and head over to his shop where we have been housing our Stocker project getting it ready for paint. When we arrived we noticed the side door open. Once we entered we found the car, new moser rear end, two 305 bare blocks and numerous tools and other parts had been stolen. After talking to the sherrifs office we were informed that the stuff is probably heading up north to the NY area or west to the Texas area. This project was a 87 Monte Carlo SS that is in primer and sealer. The interior was removed for paint but they took that too. It has warlock wheels with new hoosiers all the way around. The frame was powder coated black and the jambs were already painted candy rasberry. Please if you see this car let me know. This project was being done by kids from 3 local schools and my daughter and myself. We have worked really hard to educate these kids on class racing and they were so excited to get the car so close to completion. We are trying to find some pictures from cell phones as the digital camera was in the shop for record purposes and that is gone too. If anyone has a 84 to 88 monte or cutlass that they could donate or sell really cheap it would also be helpful. Please let us know. All information will be kept confidential.

Re: Tough Night

I think that stealing a race car should be added to capital punishment ranks. I really feel for you guys and the kids. I would post pictures of the wheels and tires, you never know. Good luck, hopefully someone might come across your car. I would keep touching base with your Sheriff's Department in hope that they keep on it. I think the thieves might not cross the car into another state mostly due to the Federal Offense they might receive from crossing State line which could add to their sentence if caught(check with your local FBI office). You never know, you might just come across someone desk with the right attitude, even a racer(a lot of us out there). Good Luck.

Re: Tough Night

That is a real lousy deal, Floyd.....Have your people watching craigslist adds and checking the spring swap meets. Lots of stolen performance stuff is showing up on there....Also, down where you're located, that Monte body could also end up running on some small roundy-round track.....trying to help out some kids and these idiots break in and steal something both you and they worked so hard together on really makes you lose faith in some people these days. :( WJ

Floyd, we will keep a watch out down here in fla, I will spread the word to all the shops and racers I know.

Re: Tough Night

Thanks guys. Evidently this is an ongoing problem. 2 cars that were stolen earlier this year turned up in NY. Another that was stolen last year turned up in Texas. These guys are definately pros as nothing was destroyed and no prints were left. The hardest thing to swallow is the kids. They have worked so hard retaining sponsorship and donations for this project. This was not for a grade or anything like that so nobody had to do it. They just simply did it for the love of the sport. Hopefully we can find another GM body and start over. Just sad to lose it all after coming so far.

Sorry to read about stolen car. Besides the Spring Carlisle coming up in Pennsylvania, there is also a GM Carlisle dedicated to only GM cars, parts etc. Just a thought... hope you recover you stuff.

Re: Tough Night

Floyd that is a bad deal for sure. yellowbullet .com is a great place to spread the word. They can be ruthless on the site but they hate thiefs and people that have posted problems have gotten results. G-body cars are very much in demand in street tire events and that is the type of people on the site. Make sure you post on the newbie thread or you will get hammered. The site is not a fix all but the results that have come from it is very good.

I have held commenting on this until now, because well having stuff stolen (ESPECIALLY for the kids) is just sickening, its impossible to explain to them why someone would do it, its sad, it changes a persons perspective forever. I have had things stolen and now well, I am 38 yrsold and understand to some degree why people steal a)theyre lazy dirtbags b)maybe in a real bad spot and need to feed the family c)are just thieves d)do it for the thrill e)cant make an honest living f)werent raised right, the list goes on and on. But while I agree with none of them I understand it.

To a younger person they cant and it wil jade their perception of people to some degree, try not to let that happen Floyd, let them see you handle it well and their emotions will follow, dont get too negative about the dirtbags that stole it in front of them even though I too would be seething. Shrug it off as a "well they obviously need it more to steal it" and let them know youll built the next one better, the next one is always better because you learn on the first, try somehow to turn it into a positive for them.

You understand I think what Im trying to say.

I do know where theres a complete and rust free Monte (81) for about $800 no title, its in a shop that has been owed money on it for 10 years...lol...they never re-applied for a title. Its just sat inside...its my cousins shop, if he wasnt so broke and needing the money I would ask him to donate it.....but its an "option" I guess, Ill root around if there is anything I can think or find SBC and GM Ill ask you if you can use it.

Ill also keep an eye out, but I dont see it ending up here, Ebay and CL though.

Drooze,

You may well have hit on something here.

Floyd,

What might you need in the way of parts, tools, what not? You could throw a list of stuff on here that you could use? I doubt I have enough spares of anything that you might want but if I did and it's something I don't need. Be glad to donate it. From the response here, probably others that feel like I do.

For that matter, I have a 92 RS Camaro body setting in the driveway, the owner of the car wants the transmission and the t-tops back. My wife promised the driver side mirror to a kid she works with (long story there, LOL). I'm going to use the engine for spare parts. Other than that, I was going to strip it, part it out and scrap it. It's not a cherry by any stretch of the imagination. Wouldn't take a lot of money for me to let it go. Downside for you, I'm in Indiana. Something to consider.

I've dealt with thieves a time or two myself, it sucks.

Where are the rest of you??? Time to do more than gripe about the younger generation..... Time to "man up" ( hey you gals, not being sexest but I"M on a roll here).... Guys. Your response has been overwhelming. It brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart to be a part of such a tremendous elite group of fellow racers. I cannot thank you enough for all of your support. As far as a list of parts we are basically starting over from scratch. I went today and purchased another tool set from Sears along with a new box. I wanted to show the kids that although we have to start over it is not the end of the world. We did find out that on Sunday around 6pm a white Chevy Dually with a white enclosed trailer was at the shop. The shop is in an industrial are and the guy that spotted the truck just thought it was one of us getting the car and parts. I am thankful they did not approach these guys because we don't know what would have happened. I am also grateful that none of the kids had went by during this time and walked in on them. A life is more important than anything else. I talked to a few of the kids today and we are having a meeting this week to discuss a new project. I told them not to worry because this one would be better than the last and we still have a shot at finishing it this season.

How close are you to Myrtle Beach? There were so many classic cars in South Carolina over the week-end. I will spread the word around the North Carolina area. A lot of cars and collectors from this area were down there this past week-end and a dually pulling and enclosed trailer could have been anyone of hundreds on the interstate Sunday.

Were the two 305 blocks stock bore? What other chevy engine parts did you lose and need to get started back? No young people wanting to get in this sport need to have their stuff stolen by some low lifes.

Me and the old man are good for $100 each, so that 600 remaining , and 200 (or 300 of that ?) has been commited to here....

How to get it down from Ohio to Florida, (I did say the car has no title but it IS Kosher , his shop is full of cars people owe him money on for the last 20 years lol...youd have to know him....nothing EVERY leaves there)

Not the greatest pics but, well, I was taking pictures of other "junk" around his shop for him about 3 days ago. And snapped these.

Most of the "new stuff" on it would be useless for a stocker I think, Springs, Rear end backing plates, etc. Brake stuff. the like.

I didnt get under it, but its solid, he said rust free and it looks it got some surface on it around the rear wheelwells but its just that. Actually its been sitting since about 95 so thats, 15 years......

But its located in Akron Ohio, I just have no time to haul it to Fla right now ?

Chris I am about 2 hours from Myrtle Beach but you never know. As far as parts. Both blocks were stock bore but plans were to go .040 over. We also had 3 sets of stock heads we picked up at a local salvage dealer. 2 quads that were also stock and a 200 metric and TH350 trans that we bought from a racer in Atlanta.

I have no idea what tranny is in it, the motor is a 305 in it , but this is an 81, I dont know if thats good for your plans. He said it ran good but had low oil pressure, I think it had a hair over 100k miles on it.

Re: Tough Night

Floyd,

If you decide to go with Chris car. I still have the old 92 Camaro. I'm going to strip the drivetrain, anyway. The crankshaft from the motor in the car is designated to another project. It is a 305 motor. If you could use the block, heads or rods. I'd be glad to donate them. You'll have to remove the pistons, LOL!

I'd need to make arrangements to get them over to Chris, they could go with the car. The drivetrain is still in the car, so, I would also need a timeframe to get them out and clean them up a little.

I know it's not much, the best I can offer at this time.

Floyd Gomez 03-25-2010 04:10 PM

Re: Tough Night

Time for a quick update. We have had several people offer cars and are trying to decide what body style to run. The kids are not sure if they want to run an older car or stick the the Monte concept. Thanks to all that have offered support and donations. We have compiled a list of items that we lost.
The car had a 6 point roll cage
sub frame connectors
turbo action shifter
Jegs guages
autometer tach and shift light
Jegs switch panel
Warrior(I was corrected) wheels with Hoosiers all the way
hurst line lock
accel ignition.
Full interior with new covers that was out of the car for paint.
Simpson camloc 5 point harnesses
Moser 12 bolt with 4.88 gears and a spare set of 5.13 still in crate
2 305 stock blocks.
3 Sets of stock heads
200 metric trans
th350 trans
2 engine stands
moroso valve covers
solid motor mounts from Jegs
Complete craftsman tool box and tools (I got a new one)
Tach light and a cam degree kit that was on loan
Jegster Drag race suspension kit
Cannon Digital Camera
David lost a ton of paint stuff and some tools of his own along with 2 brand new paint guns.

I really hope the guys that took this stuff needed the money to feed their family. I know times are tough for a lot of people and although that excuse doesn't make it right, it makes things a little easier to swallow.

I am a long time reader of this forum and rarely post. This thread has hit home. As someone who is in the process of building a car, I understand the amount of work and money it takes to build a nice car, only to have some knuckle draggers steal it. Really pisses me off.
